<b>Back in 1998, Dora Akunyili was the South-East Zonal Secretary of the Petroleum Trust Fund [PTF], when she had to travel to the United States for health reasons. Since her death in June 2014, it has emerged that she went to the US back then to get a cancer treatment surgery.</b></div>

A letter has just been released which <b>Dora Akunyili</b> wrote in 1999 thanking <b>Gen. Buhari</b> who was then the PTF Chairman, and who had approved £17,100 for her medical treatment. </div>

In the letter, she also returned some part of the money which she did not use, and Buhari was happy about her honesty and personal integrity.</div>

Gbenga Daniel, the immediate past Governor of the State, has vowed to be the candidate of the PDP; while fugitive millionaire-politican, Buruji Kashamu, has already been declared candidate by the Ogun chapter of the party.</div>

Although both men are loyalists of President Goodluck Jonathan, they have been political enemies within the PDP until a recent reconciliation allegedly at the instance of the President who seeks to rally his troops to help secure victory in Ogun and other South West states for the February 14 presidential election.</div>

After both publicly announced a reconciliation of their differences in October, each man’s declaration to seek the ticket of the party for the seat was expected to be tough and a primary set for December. Some days to the primary, however, Mr. Daniel pulled out while the national headquarters of the party asked for a suspension of the primary.</div>

The Bayo Dayo-led executives of the Ogun PDP, who are loyal to the Mr. Kashamu, however, went ahead with the congress which produced the controversial millionaire as senatorial candidate.</div>

With the national leadership refusing to recognise Mr. Kashamu’s candidacy, the state was set for a local showdown.</div>

On December 28, hundreds of supporters of Mr. Kashamu besieged the Goodluck Jonathan Political Centre in Ijebu-Igbo insisting that their candidate was duly elected. They accused Mr. Daniel of trying to use his influence in the national leadership to scuttle Mr. Kashamu’s candidacy. The supporters, from the nine local governments that make up the zone, threatened to vote against the PDP if the millionaire’s candidacy was withdrawn by the national headquarters.</div>

Addressing the protesters, the Ogun PDP Chairman, Bayo Dayo, pledged to deliver their message to the national headquarters.</div>

"I’ve heard what the nine local government areas have resolved. This (Kashamu) is the best man in Ogun East Senatorial district", the Chairman said.</div>

"I’ve heard you and I’ll communicate this to the appropriate quarters. The confidence you have given him is to reassure him that you will not let him down. Go back to your local governments and try your best to make sure that you deliver your local government."</div>

In his message to his supporters, Mr. Kashamu, who is wanted for drug related offences in the United States, said although he was under a lot of pressure to step down for Mr. Daniel, he would not. He said he believed he would win the election in the district.</div>

Undeterred by the stance of Mr. Kashamu and the Ogun PDP, Mr. Daniel has, however, insisted that he would be the PDP candidate for the February election.</div>

In a statement on January 2 by his media aide, Ayo Giwa, Mr. Daniel stated that the primary that produced his rival was illegal.</div>

"For the avoidance of doubt, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP has declared that there were no authorised primaries held in Ogun State as the leadership of the party had earlier on called on all stakeholders to come with a unity list of candidates encompassing all various interest groups across the State.</div>

Tremendous progress has been made in this respect and the onus lies on the leadership to point the way forward,” he said.</div>

<b>Two suspected armed robbers, Emeka Edward and George David, are currently cooling their feet at the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly robbing in the Alagbado area of the State.</b></div>

They added that they had no choice but to flee.</div>

He said, “It was only Kelvin that had a gun. The two of us only had knives. It was about 7p.m when we got to the house. We met a woman with her four children and we asked them to lie on the ground.</div>

“We held the woman by the wrapper and she thought we wanted to rape her. She ignored the gun and ran out of the building, shouting to attract attention.</div>

“When we saw that the people were gathering, we ran out and Kelvin escaped. I was pursued and was eventually caught. The residents wanted to lynch me, but a few others prevented them and advised that I should be taken to the police station.”</div>

Edward added that he went out with the gang to have money to his mother to take care of his siblings.</div>

“I dropped out of secondary school in Junior Secondary School 1. My father is dead and I have four siblings. I agreed to go out with Kelvin and David because I needed money to give for my mother to take care of my younger ones,” he added.</div>

Also, David, 27, from Aniocha North, Delta State, said Kelvin was their leader and he had promised him a huge sum of money. He added that he embarked on the operation because of financial difficulties.</div>

He said, “I was a commercial tricycle driver. At a point when I could no longer cope financially, I sold my tricycle for ₦80,000. When I met Kelvin, he said we could go on the street and make some money since he had a gun. He was the one who led us to the house of the victims. But he managed to escape that night.</div>

“He told me he was travelling to South Africa and he needed money to complete his visa processing. I knew I was foolish for going with him, but it was because of my financial condition.”</div>

The body of a woman, thought to be in her early 20s, was discovered by a police officer at <b>Harlescott Junior School</b> in Shrewsbury just before midnight yesterday after concerns were raised for the safety of a local, West Mercia Police said.</div>
