And, come to think of it, does not attending a university make one an illiterate or, rather a semi-literate? Ouch! That's an unpardonable goof by a supposed PhD holder. The Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA) is a degree-awarding institution. So anyone who graduates from NDA and not UNILAG or UNIPORT is a semi-literate? I pity the doctor who reportedly made the statement. Below is how the <i>Punch</i> is reporting the story as written by John Alechenu and Sola Fabiyi.</b></div>

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has said that its presidential candidate in the forthcoming election, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, will be contesting against a semi-literate candidate.</div>

Ostensibly referring to the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), the party also said the election would be between Jonathan and "a military jackboot".</div>

Buhari, a former head of state, is the only presidential candidate who has a military background .</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Section 131(d) of the 1999 Constitution allows anyone with school certificate qualification to contest any elective office in the country.</div>

The PDP, through its National Secretary, Dr. Wale Oladipo, said when some leaders of the PDP in the   Diaspora visited its national secretariat in Abuja on Monday that there was no way the President would not win the election.</div>

It said, “The next election is going to be between darkness and light. It is going to be between a cosmopolitan highly-focused Ph.D holder and a semi-literate jackboot.</div>

“Our candidate is a man who believes in integrating the economy of Nigeria into the world economic order. He is a man who believes that the power sector should continue to be reformed so that we will attain the level of power generation and distribution that is commensurate with our aspiration in terms of industrial development. Nigeria cannot afford to go back. We will continue to move forward.”</div>

The party said having won three presidential elections in which Buhari ran on the platforms of different political parties, there was no way it would not floor the APC which had decided to field   the former military leader as its presidential candidate.</div>

Describing the APC as a party not ready to offer alternatives, the party advised Nigerians to remain with it.</div>

It said, “Even though we are not a perfect party, our mission is perfect.</div>

“We do not belong to any religious organisation and we don’t belong to any ethnic group. In preparing for the next election, which is not going to be like previous ones because for the first time, the opposition has coupled together a contraption that is called the APC.</div>

“They have passed through the motion and endorsed their perennial candidate. We have beaten him three times, we are going to beat him once again.</div>

“The APC is not a political party that is ready to offer an alternative to the teeming masses of this country. The only agenda they seem to have is to see our back.”</div>

The PDP said that God had decided that Nigeria would not only continue to wax stronger,   he had also “decided that this country will not go back to 1983 when we had to start doing trade-by-barter with Brazil; when we went back 500 years to start practising what our ancestors practised when there was no currency in this country.”</div>

“God has decried it that we will continue to pilot the affairs of this country and continue to implement the transformation agenda,” the PDP added.</div>

But the Director of Publicity of the Buhari 2015 Support Group Centre, Dr. Chidia Maduekwe, expressed shock about the PDP comments, saying they showed the depth of their understanding of Buhari.</div>

He said, “How can the PDP refer to a man who had his initial military training   in Nigeria and the best officer cadet training institutions in the world as semi-literate. They are so lazy that they can not check Gen. Buhari’s profile in this internet age.The general went to the Military Training College in Kaduna; the Mons Officer Cadet School in the United Kingdom; the Defence Services College in India and the Army War College in the United States. The certificates given by these institutions are equivalent to university degrees.</div>

“Contrast him with our Ph.D holder (Jonathan) who has run our economy aground and our foreign reserves depleted and we are today raking up debts.</div>

Bolaji Akinyemi, a professor of political science and deputy chairman of the just-concluded National Conference, has written an open letter to both candidates urging them to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) committing themselves to peace and security in prosecuting their campaigns.<br />
<br />
Jonathan is seeking re-election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while Buhari is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).<br />
<br />
The MoU, according to Akinyemi, should compel the candidates to undertake a civil and peaceful campaign,”devoid of threats”.<br />
<br />
Akinyemi warned that if Buhari loses the election, there will be violence in the north and if Jonathan loses, Niger Delta militants will resort t violence.<br />
<br />
He asked prominent traditional rulers and religious leaders to convene a meeting between Buhari and Jonathan ahead of the elections.<br />

<i>Your Excellencies, </i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>Shortly after his appointment as National Security Adviser, General Andrew Azazi, at his own request, met with me in my office in Lagos to discuss the State of the Nation. It was on the eve of the 2011 elections. I told the General that I was not worried about the conduct of the elections or about the outcome which I expected President Jonathan to win. What really worried me, I told the General, was the management of the violence that would ensue after the elections. I was sure that there would be violence on a massive scale and I made some suggestions to him about how I thought the violence could be contained. My suggestions were not acted upon. The elections occurred, President Jonathan won and all hell broke loose. Missing were the conflict-controlled measures which I had discussed with General Azazi. </i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>Now we are back at the same crossroads again, except this time is more precarious and dangerous than the last time. Firstly, we have this very notorious prediction from United States semi-official sources that the world is expecting a cataclysmic meltdown of the Nigerian nation come 2015. Of course most Nigerians have taken umbrage at this prediction for their country. But there are Nigerians who are indifferent to the outcome of this prediction. One of my low moments during the just concluded 2014 National Conference was when in an attempt to break an impasse, I painted a grim picture of devastation which would follow a breakdown of the Nigerian state, to which a delegate between 45 and 55 years old replied “so what?” I thought to myself, here is a man who would probably run away to a neighboring country at the boom of the first gun but was callously indifferent to the fate of the youth, women and children who would be caught in the middle. </i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>Secondly, the certainty of violence after the 2015 elections is higher than it was in 2011. If President Jonathan wins, the North would erupt into violence as it did in 2011. If General Buhari wins, the Niger-Delta will erupt into violence. I don’t believe that we need rocket science to make this prediction. </i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>The violence of 2015 is going to be horrendous and worse than the one of 2011 for the simple reason that the illegal massive importation of weapons into the country has reached such alarming proportions that I really wonder which is better armed, the militias on one hand or the official armed forces on the other hand. For the avoidance of doubt, I am not imputing the illegal importation of arms to any particular zone. Some years ago, some Iranians were arrested for bringing in a shipload of weapons into Lagos harbor. They were tried and jailed and then smuggled out of the country. Some months ago, sophisticated weapons were discovered buried in the basement of a Kano house. All these have now fallen below the radar. These are the ones we know about. How many do we not know about? </i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>There are states and movements out there, African and non-African, which do not mean well for the Nigerian state, which wish Nigeria to dissolve into a theatre of bloodshed, gore and instability. They will succeed if we continue the politics of making enemies of ourselves and friends of our enemies. </i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<b><i>WHAT IS THE WAY FORWARD?</i></b><br />
<i>The first step forward is for the two Presidential Candidates to meet and sign a Memorandum of Undertaking that will commit both to: </i><br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><i>A civil and peaceful campaign, devoid of threats. </i></li>
<li><i>A commitment to preach peaceful elections to their supporters. </i></li>
<li><i>A commitment to control their supporters after the elections. Supporters of whoever loses should be entitled to peaceful protests but not to violent protests.</i></li>
