<b>Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi escaped unhurt in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area on Thursday when gunmen, suspected to be political thugs, fired shots at his convoy.</b><br />
<br />
<b>PUNCH</b> reports that two members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were however unlucky as they were seriously injured in the incident, which happened at about 6p.m on Thursday.<br />
<br />
The governor was on a door-to-door ward campaign of the area.<br />
<br />
An SMS sent to PUNCH correspondent by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. David Iyofor, indicated that the attackers made bonfire along a major road in the area to prevent the governor from leaving.<br />
<br />
The SMS reads: "This evening, gunshots were fired at the convoy of Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi at Rumuolumeni, Obio/Akpor LGA by PDP thugs.<br />
<br />
"Obio/Akpor is the home of the PDP governorship candidate in the state, Nyesom Wike. The thugs attacked the governor’s convoy and his entourage with bottles, stones and other dangerous objects. Then gunshots were fired at the convoy.<br />
<br />
"When the governor was leaving the community, bonfire was set up on the road to prevent him from leaving. More gunshots were fired at his convoy. Amaechi was on door-to-door ward campaign in the state."<br />
<br />
The Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged an assassination attempt on Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.<br />
<br />
Rivers APC Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, said that the attempt took place on Thursday at the Rumuolumeni area of Port Harcourt, the state capital.<br />
<br />
He said some unidentified gun-wielding youths had first blocked the exit route of the governor’s convoy and advanced to where Amaechi was addressing supporters of the party in Obio/Akpor, shooting.<br />
<br />
The governor’s security details returned fire and quickly built a wall around him and drove him away into safety.<br />
<br />
Ikanya further claimed that assassins have been commissioned to kill Amaechi in his hometown of Ubima when he goes to vote Saturday in the presidential election.<br />
<br />
"To add to our travails, the Port Harcourt residence of our gubernatorial candidate, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, has been cordoned off while 35 APC leaders have been arrested in the past 24 hours for no just cause", Ikanya stated.<br />
<br />
He blamed the State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of working in concert with the police on what is code-named 'Operation Holocaust' which started on Thursday and would involve a house-to-house attack on APC members in Rivers.<br />
<br />
"The non-indigenes have already been forced to flee the State," he said, adding: "By Friday they will go for Ojukaye Flag-Amachree, the Asari Toru LGA CTC Chairman, attempting to murder him with other APC leaders in Asari-Toru and Akuku-Toru. After that they will invade the home of Chief Victor Giadom, the Director General of APC Campaign Organisation, at Gokana, to arrest him with Senator Magnus Abe and Hon. Barika. The following people have been listed to be attacked: Udi Odun in Abua, Cassidy Ikegbedi in Ahoada, Allwell Oneyeroh in Etche, Nnamdi Okere in Oke-Etche.<br />

Ikanya in the statement dismissed as ridiculous, the rumour making the rounds that he has defected to PDP.<br />
<br />
"That will never happen. Whoever started or is spreading that lie should be treated for acute malaria," he said.<br />
<br />
The Rivers APC Chairman dismissed the rumour as the handiwork of the Rivers PDP. He said: "Last Monday, Mr. Felix Obuah, the PDP State Chairman while receiving the defected Deputy Governor, Engr Tele Ikuru, boasted that about six commissioners in Gov. Amaechi’s cabinet would be joining them by Wednesday – that is, two days ago. If I may ask, where are the commissioners that have joined them? Of course, only a Judas Iscariot can join them. In every given time only one Judas exists and he has already departed, thereby leaving APC more virile, united and stronger."<br />

<b>Some soldiers on Thursday afternoon besieged the country-home of Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole in Iyamoh, Auchi in Etsako West Local Government area.</b><br />
<br />
Speaking on the matter via a press statement, the Edo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Louis Odion, stated that the aim of the invasion was to intimidate the governor and manipulate the elections in favour of PDP.<br />
<br />
Odion said: "Family members of the Comrade Governor were shocked to find his country-home taken over by soldiers this afternoon.<br />
<br />
"When asked, the invading force said they were acting on orders from above. We also have it on good authority that the Army high command in Abuja had sent some soldiers to Edo State on what they described as, 'special operations'.<br />
<br />
"In order not to arouse suspicion, these soldiers were told to dress in suits and pose as SSS operatives and station themselves at polling units on election day, particularly in areas seen as APC strongholds.<br />
<br />
"They were told to harass and possibly detain polling agents of APC in order to clear the ground for rigging by agents of PDP, who would be wearing special hand bands. It is a rehash of the rigging manual implemented in Ekiti, last year."<br />
<br />
The commissioner also stated that Governor Oshiomhole’s campaign jingle on Channels Television, in which Oshiomhole endorsed General Buhari, was stopped abruptly two days ago on orders from above.<br />
<br />
He added: "For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to use this medium to tell the Army high command that Comrade Oshiomhole cannot be intimidated even with whole might of the Nigerian Army from insisting on the application of the principle of 'one man, one vote' on the election day.<br />
<br />
"We hope that as patriots, officers and men of the Nigerian Army will not allow themselves to be used by political desperadoes to truncate this democracy."<br />

<b>A branch of the Living Faith Church, popularly called the Winners Chapel, in Giwa, headquarters of Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State, has been set ablaze.</b><br />
<br />
The church, founded by Bishop David Oyedepo, was reportedly set ablaze by two unidentified arsonists according to <b>DailyPost</b> reports.<br />
<br />
The burning of the church came a few months after the reported endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan by Oyedepo.<br />
<br />
A terse statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by the President of Tarayyar Masihiyawan Nijeria (Hausa, Fulani and Kanuri Christians), General Ishaku Ahmed Dikko (rtd), and the Director of National Issues of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Sunny Oibe, entitled: "Presidential Elections 2015: Signs of what to expect," called on security agencies to act fast to avoid violence in the area.<br />
<br />
According to Dikko and Oibe, the Christians in the North, particularly the Hausa, Fulani and Kanuri speaking Christians, who are indigenous in these states and live within and among their kith and kin, "are in serious jeopardy".<br />
<br />
The statement reads in full: |Giwa is the Headquarters of Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State. On Friday, 20 March, 2015 at about 2:30 pm, two (2) unknown hoodlums on a motorcycle drove into the premises of Living Faith Church (Winners Chapel) and set it ablaze."<br />

<b>The Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Ali Olanusi, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party Thursday morning, has given reasons for his action.</b><br />
<br />
In a statement Thursday afternoon, Mr. Olanusi said he decided to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) after realising that the party offers a platform where he can find justice, fairness and equity.<br />
<br />
He said: "While still being in place as the democratically elected Deputy Governor of Ondo State, I have decided to lead my teeming supporters and well wishers in the state into the All Progressive Congress (APC) where we can find justice, fairness, equity and democratic liberty, a party to which majority of our kith and kins in Yorubaland belong.<br />
<br />
"I have taken this decision at this critical time, in the best interest of peace, stability and good governance of our dear state and for the overall development of the South West and the nation."<br />
<br />
"They (his followers) have watched helplessly in the last six years years the untold marginalisation and total exclusion from the government they laboured to put in place."<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, the Ondo State Commissioner for Information, Kayode Akinmade, said: "The state government just received the news of the defection of Alhaji Ali Olanusi, the Deputy Governor of Ondo State, to the All Progressives Congress.<br />
<br />
"Though it came as a surprise, government acknowledges his right to determine his political affiliation and wish him well."<br />
<br />
Mr. Olanusi is said to have had a frosty relationship with Governor Olusegun Mimiko for sometime.<br />
<br />
He ran with Mr. Mimiko on the platform of the Labour Party in 2007, becoming Deputy Governor in 2009 after the Court of Appeal declared Mr. Mimiko winner of the disputed 2007 governorship election in the state.<br />
<br />
He ran again with Mr. Mimiko on the platform of the same party in 2014.<br />
<br />
In October 2014, the governor and his deputy defected to the PDP.<br />
<br />
Mr. Olanusi’s defection came less than a week after the Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Tele Ikuru, left the APC for the PDP.<br />

<b>Hours to Saturday’s presidential election, the Buhari presidential campaign coordinator in Cross River State, Engineer U. Oko, has defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP).</b><br />
<br />
Uko, who defected with all his supporters, pledged to mobilise support for the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan.<br />
<br />
He told a crowd of PDP supporters in Bekwarra that his decision to quit the APC for the PDP was informed by President Jonathan’s sterling achievements in office.<br />
<br />
On hand to receive him back into the party was the PDP candidate for the House of Representatives elections for Bekwarra/Obudu/Obanliku Federal Constituency, Barrister Legor Idagbo.<br />
<br />
Idagbo commended him for the bold step and stated that unlike the broom, the PDP umbrella was big enough to accommodate everyone.<br />
<br />
He noted that Oko was a grass root mobiliser and an astute politician who will contribute a great deal to the continued growth of the PDP in the State.<br />
<br />
He assured Oko that he and all his supporters would be taken care of in the PDP.<br />
<br />
Barrister Idagbo also stated that it was clear from all indications that President Jonathan is the more popular candidate and will win the Presidential elections with a comfortable margin.<br />

<b>The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja this morning reaffirmed Barrister David Umaru of All Progressives Congress (APC) as the lawful winner and Senator-elect for Niger East Senatorial district by-election conducted in August last year.</b><br />
<br />
The court dismissed the appeal by Dr. Shem Zagbayi Nuhu of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who challenged the quashing of his victory by the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in January.<br />
<br />
The Court had earlier dismissed the appeal filed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and PDP in the same case for failing to transmit the records of proceedings of the lower court that ruled on the matter.<br />
<br />
Nuhu had on September 7, 2014 been declared winner of the Niger East Senatorial by-election by INEC, a development was contested at the election tribunal by Umaru and judgement given in favour of the APC candidate.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile Umaru will be flying the APC flag at Niger East Senatorial election against the state governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu of PDP.</div>

<b><i>Al Jazeera</i> demands the release of their two Nigerian journalists who have been detained in Maiduguri by Nigerian forces since Tuesday morning.</b><br />

<i>Al Jazeera</i>’s <b>Ahmed Idris</b> and producer <b>Ali Mustafa</b> were detained in their hotel room after they were returning from covering a story on the Nigerian forces fighting Boko Haram in Borno State. The story was part of <i>Al Jazeera</i>’s special coverage on the Nigerian elections.<br />
<br />
After military officials questioned the men in their hotel rooms their camera equipment was confiscated. Both men have been kept in their hotel rooms and are officially detained until further notice.<br />
<br />
According to a reported military statement, both men were questioned and restrained in their room because they were operating without “protection, accreditation or due clearance" -  despite having just completed filming with the cooperation of the military.<br />
<br />
Additionally, both Ahmed and Mustafa are officially accredited by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja with the clearance to report from anywhere in Nigeria during the entire election period.<br />
<br />
The military statement also said that both men were said to be 'loitering' in various locations, however they were actually detained in their hotel rooms.<br />
<br />
The statement gave a reminder about warnings given to "foreign" journalists, but both Idris and Mustafa are Nigerian nationals. Idris has rich experience reporting in northern Nigeria. Last year he was the first international journalist to reach Chibok and interview families affected by the mass kidnap of schoolgirls by Boko Haram.<br />

An <i>Al Jazeera</i> spokesperson said: “We call on the Nigerian authorities to release Ahmed Idris and Ali Mustafa; they have all the relevant paperwork to report on the Nigerian elections and stories related to the election. Both men had just finished filming a story on the military with their cooperation. They were not ‘loitering’, but were in the hotel room and had only passed through the restricted areas of Yobe and Borno State to get to Maiduguri.”<br />
<br />
“Both men are accredited and respected Nigerian journalists. As Nigerian citizens they are allowed to travel their country freely. Al Jazeera calls on the authorities to end this matter swiftly by returning all their equipment and releasing both men without conditions.”<br />

<b>Gallant Nigerian military troops, this morning recovered Gwoza, the headquarters and last stronghold of Boko Haram in Borno state, from the trip of the insurgents, pushing them out, to the fringes of the country.</b><br />

Director of Defense Information, Major General Chris Olukolade, who disclosed the latest feat of the Nigerian military to journalists in Abuja on Friday claimed that Gwoza, which he described as "the epicenter of all Boko Haram activities", was cleared of the militants, this morning.<br />
<br />
President Goodluck Jonathan had assured Nigerians that Gwoza would be re-taken from Boko Haram "latest on Friday"; while some international journalists and election observers.<br />
<br />
"We believe that by Thursday, or latest Friday, we will be able to take over Gwoza. If we take over Gwoza, it will not take us more than one week to clean up", he had said.<br />
<br />
The Gwoza capture is expected to help in clarifying the whereabouts of the Chibok girls abducted in April 2014, considering that on Tuesday, Mbutu Papka, a woman who was recently freed after eight months in Boko Haram captivity, said the girls were in the town.<br />
<br />
"In the camp at Gwoza, there were clear demarcations between where people were kept.... No one was allowed anywhere near the specific location of the girls, which was being guarded round the clock," Papka had said.<br />
<br />
"The Chibok girls, other captives and Boko Haram members and their family members all had their separate areas secured, though the security in the area where the girls are kept is visibly different and much tighter."<br />
<br />
The Military dint not disclose details of the missing Chibok girls or their latest efforts at rescuing them, to reunite them, with their parents, more than 11 months after they were abducted.<br />

Since rising to a five-year high in July, Nigeria’s benchmark stock index has plummeted 30 percent and is now only 11 percent higher than when Jonathan took office in May 2010. Stocks in South Africa and Kenya rallied 90 percent in the period, while those in Zambia and Ghana more than doubled. The Naira fell to a record in February, and domestic government bond yields of almost 16 percent are the highest among 31 emerging markets monitored by Bloomberg indexes.<br />
<br />
"It's been horrible", Ayodele Salami, who oversees $200 million of Nigerian assets as Chief Investment Officer of Duet Asset Management, said by phone from London on Feb. 23. "Foreigners have been getting out of equities and fixed income. Bond yields in Nigeria are now astronomically high."<br />
<br />
Jonathan’s failure to wean Nigeria off its reliance on oil, and save surplus revenue when crude prices were trading at record highs, is coming back to haunt his campaign for a second term in office. A plunge in crude of almost 50 percent since June risks slowing economic growth in 2015 to half the pace set over the past 15 years. A win for his opponent, Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress, may tempt foreign investors back to Africa’s biggest economy and spur a rally in Nigerian assets, according to Holger Siebrecht at Boston-based Acadian Asset Management.<br />
<br />
<b>Election Delay</b><br />
The election was delayed by six weeks after security forces said they needed more time to defeat an insurgency by Islamist militant group Boko Haram, which killed 4,700 people last year, according to U.K.-based risk consultancy Verisk Maplecroft. With lower oil prices slashing export revenues, the International Monetary Fund forecasts growth of 4.8 percent this year, about half the average of the past 15 years.<br />
<br />
Buhari, a 72-year-old former military ruler, is seeking to unseat Jonathan, 57, in what is set to be the nation's closest election since Nigeria ended military rule in 1999.<br />
<br />
Standard & Poor's downgraded the West African country on March 20 to B+, four levels below investment grade, citing loss of income from oil and rising political risks. Nigeria, which has long had a reputation for endemic graft, ranked 136 of 175 countries in Transparency International’s 2014 Corruption Perceptions Index, level with Russia and Iran.<br />
<br />
Buhari’s APC aims to boost economic growth to 10 percent and increase employment by providing cheap loans to small businesses, according to a manifesto on its website. Jonathan said on March 12 he will sell more state companies to the private sector if he wins and encourage oil, power and telecommunications firms to list on the stock exchange. His spokesman, Doyin Okupe, didn't respond to Bloomberg's telephone calls and text messages seeking comment.<br />
<br />
<b>'More Effective'</b><br />
"We think the market may welcome a win by General Buhari", Siebrecht, who helps oversee $360 million of emerging-market debt at Acadian, said in an e-mailed response to questions on Tuesday.<br />
<br />
"Buhari is likely to be more effective than Jonathan" at tackling corruption and Boko Haram, and managing the government’s finances amid falling earnings from oil, he said.<br />
<br />
Acadian joined investors including Morgan Stanley and TCW Group Inc. in cutting exposure to Nigerian assets in the last quarter of 2014. Foreign investors have reduced their holdings of naira government bonds to 14 percent of the total from as much as 27 percent in 2012, according to Standard Chartered Plc. Outflows from the equity market were the highest in November since at least 2012.<br />
<br />
"If the government had saved substantially during the period of high oil prices, the nation would have had buffers to cushion the slide in the Naira and by extension the stock market", Sewa Wusu, head of research at Sterling Capital Markets Ltd., said by phone from Lagos on March 20.<br />
<br />
The main problem for investors remains the Naira, which has weakened 18 percent against the dollar in the past six months. While the currency rebounded 1.9 percent this month to 199.05 per dollar as of 3:32 p.m. in Lagos, trading restrictions imposed by the central bank mean it is overvalued and will probably weaken after the election, according to Investec Asset Management.<br />
<br />
<b>'Foreign Flows'</b><br />
"Investors are waiting for the election to pass, and they’re also waiting for the naira to devalue", Joseph Rohm, a money manager at Investec, which oversees $107 billion, said by phone from Cape Town on March 20. "Once you see the naira devalue further you’ll see foreign portfolio flows back into Nigeria again."<br />
<br />
Forward prices imply the naira will weaken to 244 against the dollar in six months and 261 in a year, according to data compiled by <b><a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-03-26/jonathan-exit-seen-as-spark-needed-to-ignite-nigerian-markets">Bloomberg</a></b>.<br />
<br />
Nigerian stocks trade at 7.9 times forward earnings, the lowest level after Zimbabwe among African bourses tracked by Bloomberg. They will probably rally whoever wins the election, but will be more buoyant if Jonathan is voted out, according to Lanre Buluro, head of research at Lagos-based Primera Africa.<br />
<br />
"If Buhari comes in we believe the rally will be much more sustained", said Buluro. "It would be a breath of fresh air. The country’s been ruled by the same party for 16 years."<br />
