<b>A former President of Ghana, Jerry Rawlings, has commended Nigerians for their choice of General Buhari in the just concluded presidential election saying that by this action, Nigerians are now ready to fight corruption.</b><br />
<br />
Rawlings gave the commendation in a statement posted on his Facebook page Wednesday.<br />
<br />
He used the opportunity to recognise the president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, for his high integrity and express his hope that he (Buhari) will assemble the kind of team Nigeria urgently requires for its rescue.<br />
<br />
"Nigerians did not vote for just anyone. They voted for a man whose integrity is extremely high. Nigeria is tired of corruption and the choice of this leader is a clear indication of where she wants to go.<br />
<br />
"I hope General Buhari will put together a team whose understanding of the power of the people recognizes and respects the will of the people", Rawlings wrote.<br />
<br />
Like everyone knows, Rawlings recognised that corruption is the bane of Nigeria and commended Nigerians for 'rejecting' corruption at the polls.<br />
<br />
He said: "Nigerians have taken the lead in the rejection of corruption.<br />
<br />
"The election result is a manifestation of the people's resolve to confront corruption, dishonesty and exploitation. This is a clear message to the new leadership. A bold step has been taken towards a new Nigeria and the incoming leader cannot be unaware of what is expected of him."<br />
<br />
The former leader took a swipe at the outgoing president Goodluck Jonathan's handling of the Boko Haram insurgency condemning him for looking up to France for help in tackling the insurgents. He expressed the hope that with General Buhari at the helms, Nigeria will regain its status among the comity of nations.<br />
<br />
"The image of President Jonathan, a Nigerian Head of State climbing up the stairs to go and complain about Boko Haram to a French President is an image I hope I will not see again."<br />
<br />
He expressed confidence that the Buhari presidency will restore the pride and dignity of africans.<br />
<br />
"General Buhari owes it to his people and to Black Africans, the restoration of our pride and the black man’s dignity".<br />

<b>The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Campaign Organisation has congratulated president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari on his emergence as Nigeria’s next president.</b><br />
<br />
Director of Media and Publicity, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, in a statement on Wednesday expressed gratitude to the Nigerian people for the overwhelming support that PDP received in the build up to the presidential election.<br />
<br />
The statement reads: “We fought a virile, strong, aggressive and very effective campaign on behalf of our candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan and we put the case to the Nigerian people as to why we believe that he ought to have been elected as President for a second term.<br />
<br />
“We are very proud of the efforts of our President and of our party and we are also very proud of the efforts of every single one of those who participated in the Presidential Campaign Organisation. As a Directorate, we could not have asked for anything more in terms of support and encouragement from our colleagues and comrades within the party and the Campaign Organisation.<br />
<br />
“I am personally very proud of my team, every single one of them; my Assistant Directors, my officers, my advisory team and every single one of those that joined hands to help us to state our case and to sell our candidate to the Nigerian people.<br />
<br />
“It has however come to a point that we must tell the world and the Nigerian people about how we feel about the outcome of the election. What we will say here today is basically to reiterate and to reflect the words of our leader and President, President Goodluck Jonathan.<br />
<br />
“We start by saying that we commend and we congratulate General Muammadu Buhari for winning this election. We also wish to commend our President, President Goodluck Jonathan, for having the courage to concede that he has lost the election at the earliest moment and also for being able to stand up and rise above party politics and being able to speak like a statesman.<br />
<br />
“We therefore urge the Nigerian people and our teeming supporters to stand firm and continue to support the democratic process and continue to agitate for a better Nigeria. We urge them to continue to support our party the PDP as best as they can even though we lost this election. We ask them to co-operate with the incoming government and to remember that we are first and foremost Nigerians before anything else.<br />
<br />
“On the day of the election when I went to vote at Ile-Ife, I held a press conference in which I told the people that more than anything else that we should try our very best to keep the peace in this country and to keep the country moving forward. I also reminded them that in every election there will always be a winner and a loser.<br />
<br />
“It is a mark of our humanity and it is also symptomatic of the type of people that we are and who we are that when the time comes we can say we fought a good fight but we lost.<br />
<br />
“And having lost, it does not mean that it is the end to the world, it just means that we need to re-group, re-organise ourselves and begin the process all over again because another elections will come in a few years time. And that is where we are today. We have conceded that we have lost.<br />
<br />
“We acknowledge the fact that we fought a good fight. We do not have any fears about the future. We did the right thing during the campaign. We have no regrets about our candidate or the way in which we conducted our campaign and we will live to fight another day.<br />
<br />
“Finally let me commend all our colleagues on the other side for also standing up for what they believed in. There was absolutely nothing personal as regards this Directorate or myself. I had nothing personal against anybody. I was simply doing my job for which I have no regrets and I wish them well and I sincerely hope that they will take Nigeria to a level that we can all be proud of.<br />
<br />
“May God grant each and everyone of us peace. May He watch over our nation. May He guide our President for the next two months whilst he is still in power and thereafter and may He guide and lead the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, in the herculean task that lies ahead for him.<br />
<br />
“My prayer is that he brings our nation together, heals the wounds and that he builds the bridges in terms of religion, ethnicity and region that he needs to build in order for us to make Nigeria a better place and to ensure that Nigeria becomes a great country that she is destined to be.<br />
<br />
“I want to end this message by thanking our colleagues in the press for always responding to us so quickly and for always being ready to hear our message and for putting it out there. Also those on the social media, both friend and foe, we thank you for your efforts. The offices of Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo and First Lady Patience Jonathan were under lock and key as of the time of filing this report on Wednesday afternoon.<br />
<br />
Although the president was in his office, none of his ministers were sighted at the State House.<br />
<br />
<b><a href="http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/daily/top-stories/51030-sambo-first-lady-s-offices-shut-as-ministers-shun-aso-rock">DAILY TRUST</a></b> correspondent reports that the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting did not hold.<br />
<br />
Many of the aides of the president were also nowhere to be found at the seat of power.<br />
<br />
Those sighted at the State House included Comptroller-General of Customs Dikko Inde Abdullah, Director-General of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) Emeka Ezeh, Executive Secretary of the National Christian Pilgrims Commission John Kennedy Opara and the Special Adviser to the President on Ethics and Values Sarah Jubril.</div>

<b>I am immensely grateful to God for this day and for this hour. I feel truly honoured and humbled that the Nigerian people have so clearly chosen me to lead them. The official announcement from INEC was the moment the vast majority of Nigerians had hoped and been waiting for. Today, history has been made, and change has finally come. Your votes have changed our national destiny for the good of all Nigerians.</b><br />
<br />
INEC has announced that I, Muhammadu Buhari, shall be your next president. My team and I shall faithfully serve you. There shall no longer be a ruling party again: APC will be your governing party. We shall faithfully serve you. We shall never rule over the people as if they were subservient to government.<br />
<br />
Our long night has passed and the daylight of new democratic governance has broken across the land. This, therefore, is not a victory for one man or even one party. It is a victory for Nigeria and for all Nigerians. Millions of you have worked for this day. So many have risked life and livelihood; and others have died that we may witness this moment.<br />
<br />
And, it is with a very heavy heart that I report many deaths and injuries amidst the jubilations yesterday. We send our sincere condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives; and wish speedy recovery to those who suffered injuries. I appeal to all our supporters to celebrate this victory with prayers and reflection instead of wild jubilation.<br />
<br />
May the souls of those who died rest in peace. Let us take a moment of silence to honour all of those whose sacrifices have brought us to this fine and historic hour. As the results of the election have shown, their labour has not been and will never be in vain. Democracy and the rule of law will be re-established in the land.<br />
<br />
Let us put the past, especially the recent past, behind us. We must forget our old battles and past grievances - and learn to forge ahead. I assure you that our government is one that will listen to and embrace all.<br />
<br />
I pledge myself and our in-coming administration to just and principled governance. There shall be no bias against or favouritism for any Nigerian based on ethnicity, religion, region, gender or social status. I pledge myself and the government to the rule of law, in which none shall be so above the law that they are not subject to its dictates, and none shall be so below it that they are not availed of its protection.<br />
<br />
You shall be able to go to bed knowing that you are safe and that your constitutional rights remain in safe hands. You shall be able to voice your opinion without fear of reprisal or victimisation. My love and concern for this nation and what I desire for it extends to all, even to those who do not like us or our politics. You are all my people and I shall treat everyone of you as my own. I shall work for those who voted for me as well as those who voted against me and even for those who did not vote at all. We all live under one name as one nation: we are all Nigerians.<br />
<br />
Some unfortunate issues about my eligibility have been raised during the campaign. I wish to state that through devotion to this nation, everything I have learned and done has been to enable me to make the best possible contribution to public life. If I had judged myself incapable of governing I would never have sought to impose myself on it. I have served in various capacities and have always put in my best.<br />
<br />
But despite the rancour of the elections, I extend a hand of friendship and conciliation to President Jonathan and his team. I hereby wish to state that I harbour no ill will against anyone.<br />
<br />
Let me state clearly that President Jonathan has nothing to fear from me. Although we may not agree on the methods of governing the nation, he is a great Nigerian and still our president. He deserves our support and permanent respect by virtue of the office he has held.<br />
<br />
This is how an honourable nation treats its servants and conducts its affairs; and this is how Nigeria should be.<br />
<br />
I look forward to meeting with President Jonathan in the days to come to discuss how our teams can make the transition of administrations as efficient as possible.<br />
<br />
Here, I want to thank my party for selecting me as its candidate. I thank our party leaders and members for the steadfast contributions they made to bring our dream to fruition. I thank INEC, the police and all other government agencies for performing their tasks in a proper manner and for refusing to be induced to undermine the election and the democratic process.<br />
<br />
I also wish to thank religious leaders, traditional leaders, the media, labour unions, civil society organisations, organised private sector, youths and students for their roles in this election.<br />
<br />
I give special thanks to President Obama and his timely intervention and support for peaceful and credible elections in Nigeria and for sending Secretary John Kerry and other United States officials.<br />
<br />
The European Union - especially the United Kingdom, France, Germany and other nations that were actively involved in ensuring the success of this election are equally appreciated. My sincere thanks to the United Nations Secretary General Mr Ban-Ki Moon. The Commonwealth, China, India and other Asian and Gulf states are also hereby appreciated.<br />
<br />
Finally our brothers in the African Union and ECOWAS have truly and clearly shown and demonstrated their commitment to our democratisation process. Former Presidents John Kuffour, Amos Sawyer, Bakili Muluzi and his team are well appreciated. I must also add my appreciation for the role played by civil societies, national and international observers, other world leaders in ensuring that Nigeria holds free and fair elections.<br />
<br />
I assure all foreign governments that Nigeria will become a more forceful and constructive player in the global fight against terrorism and in other matters of collective concern, such as the fight against drugs, climate change, financial fraud, communicable diseases and other issues requiring global response. I want to assure our fellow African nations that Nigeria will now stand as a more constructive partner in advancing the matters of concern to our continent, particularly with regard to economic development and eradication of poverty.<br />
<br />
Former Heads of State and Presidents Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, General Yakubu Gowon, Alh. Shehu Shagari, General Ibrahim Babangida, Chief Ernest Shonekan and General Abdulsalami Abubakar deserve commendations for their statesmanship and words of caution and counsel for peace during the tense moments of this electoral period.<br />
<br />
Most of all, I thank the people of Nigeria for reposing their confidence in me at this trying moment. Our nation wrestles many challenges including insecurity, corruption, economic decline. I pledge to give you my best in tackling these problems.<br />
<br />
The good people of Nigeria, your obligation does not end with casting your ballot. I seek your voice and input as we tackle these problems.<br />
<br />
This will not be a government democratic only in form. It will be a government democratic in substance and in how it interacts with its own people.<br />
<br />
No doubt, this nation has suffered greatly in the recent past, and its staying power has been tested to its limits by crises, chief among which is insurgency of the Boko Haram. There is no doubt that in tackling the insurgency we have a tough and urgent job to do. But I assure you that Boko Haram will soon know the strength of our collective will and commitment to rid this nation of terror, and bring back peace and normalcy to all the affected areas. We shall spare no effort until we defeat terrorism.<br />
<br />
Furthermore, we shall strongly battle another form of evil that is even worse than terrorism - the evil of corruption. Corruption attacks and seeks to destroy our national institutions and character. By misdirecting into selfish hands funds intended for the public purpose, corruption distorts the economy and worsens income inequality. It creates a class of unjustly-enriched people.<br />
<br />
Such an illegal yet powerful force soon comes to undermine democracy because its conspirators have amassed so much money that they believe they can buy government. We shall end this threat to our economic development and democratic survival. I repeat that corruption will not be tolerated by this administration; and it shall no longer be allowed to stand as if it is a respected monument in this nation.<br />
<br />
I ask you to join me in resolving these and the other challenges we face. Along the way, there will be victories but there may also be setbacks. Mistakes will be made. But we shall never take you for granted; so, be rest assured that our errors will be those of compassion and commitment not of wilful neglect and indifference.<br />
<br />
We shall correct that which does not work and improve that which does. We shall not stop, stand or idle. We shall, if necessary crawl, walk and run to do the job you have elected us to do.<br />
<br />
I realise that the expectation of our people today is as high as their commitment to change has been strong and their belief in us unshaken. While we pledge to begin doing our best without delay, we would like to appeal to them to appreciate the gravity of our situation, so that we become more realistic in our expectations.<br />
<br />
We will govern for you and in your interests. Your vote was not wasted.<br />
<br />
This is not the first time Nigerians have cast their votes for us, and this is not the first time they have been counted; but this is the first time that the votes have been allowed to count. With the help of God, we pledge to do our utmost to bring forth the Nigeria you seek.<br />

<b>Pandemonium was averted yesterday at the national collation centre of the presidential election, as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) practically stopped the continuation of the collation process for close to 20 minutes over allegations of partisanship against the INEC chairman, Prof Attahiru Jega.</b><br />
<br />
However the calm disposition of Jega despite the allegations contributed to containing the situation.<br />
<br />
While security agencies at the premises looked on helpless as the former minister held on to the microphone and refused to allow the INEC chairman speak, other agents and international observers at the venue made comments like “this action by PDP is very shameful”.<br />
<br />
However, the intervention of Col. Bello Fadile, another PDP agent at the centre calmed the situation as he urged the INEC chairman to respond to the issues raised.<br />
<br />
Professor Jega, however, remained calm before making this response:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"Mr Orubebe, you are a former Minister of the Federal Republic. You are a statesman in your own right. You should be careful about what you say or what allegations or accusations you make. Certainly you should be careful about your public conduct."</blockquote>
Jega’s response to Orubebe has been hailed as mature and worthy of praise. In fact, there’s a meaning for Jega now. ‘Jega’ – meaning – ‘To be inexplicably chilled in the midst of stupidity or conflict”.<br />
<br />
Prof Jega’s full response.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“You have made two comments. One is that you submitted a petition which I refused to accept. Secondly you claimed that there was a result released by the APC which you alleged that we gave to them or I gave to them. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"With regards to the first point, yesterday after we took the first batch of results in this hall and as we declared a recess until 4pm, as I was walking down back to the office, my PA came to me and said that here are some papers that Dr Bello Fadile, a representative of the PDP said that he should collect it; that I said Dr Fadile should give him those papers. I told him that I didn’t tell Dr Fadile to give any papers to you. Return them to him because Dr Fadile, after we declared for recess came on to this platform. As a party agent, he is not supposed to do that and gave some documents to my PA who is writing results here. And I am sure some of the agents and some of the pressmen may have seen that and I told my PA to take back those documents to him. If he told you I told him to give you any documents, I did not. Take them back to him.</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"Subsequently, Dr Fadile sent me a text message saying that there are petitions and that he wants to submit them. I told him we don’t collect petitions on the platform when we are declaring results and then he said I should have left my office open so that they can submit those petitions in my office. I told him our secretary, the secretary to the commission is not anywhere in this hall. She is in her office and that her business is to receive communication. If they are important enough, she would bring them to me here. I have started collation. I cannot be receiving petition in this hall or on this platform. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"And when I replied that text message, he replied again and said Okay, he will see what he can do. I interpreted the text as he was going to take that petition or whatever document he has to the secretary of the commission. As I speak with you now, I have not received anything from the secretary to the commission. That is regards to the issue of the so called petition.</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"Regarding results published by APC on its website, I do not give results to anybody. The results we announced formally as INEC are results declared here. And we have warned everybody to be careful and to ensure that they do not declare results which we have not officially announced. So as far as I am concerned I have not seen any results. I have not given anybody any results. So for you to even engage me on that issue I think frankly that is not fair to me. I have not seen the results. How can I speak on something that I have not seen. So please let us be careful of what we say or do so that we do not disrupt a process that has ended peacefully and in a matter of hours we would be able to finish it."</blockquote>

<b>Pandemonium was averted yesterday at the national collation centre of the presidential election, as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) practically stopped the continuation of the collation process for close to 20 minutes over allegations of partisanship against the INEC chairman, Prof Attahiru Jega.</b><br />
<br />
However the calm disposition of Jega inspite of the allegations contributed to containing the situation.<br />
<br />
Barely minutes after the INEC chairman settled in to commence collation, apologising for commencing late which was due to logistics issues, former minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe, and the agent of the PDP, accused the INEC chairman, Prof Attahiru Jega of being “very partisan” and compromised.<br />
<br />
In an unprecedented display of revolt, Orubebe, accused Jega of refusing to address PDP’s petition for election to be cancelled in seven states whereas the INEC chairman had sent a team of national commissioners to investigate the calls by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the cancellation of presidential election in Rivers State.<br />
<br />
The former minister also accused the INEC chairman of giving the results of the elections to APC, as was released by APC office.<br />
<br />
He said the PDP had filed a petition on the conduct of presidential elections in Jigawa, Kaduna, Gombe, Katsina, Kogi, Kano and Bauchi states.<br />
<br />
Orubebe who threw caution to the wind, described Jega as being “very partisan” and “compromised” adding “we have lost confidence in you because you are partisan.”<br />
<br />
“You have compromised. Until something is done to our letters the way you did to the APC petition.”<br />
<br />
Appeals for him to allow the INEC chairman respond fuelled Orubebe’s ranting, as he shouted at security agencies and other party agents who attempted to calm him down and allow Jega respond.<br />
<br />
The former minister who had now left his seat and sat in front of the high table, shouted “this thing cannot continue. If he wants to continue I will come back here.”<br />
<br />
Several attempts to appeal to Orubebe to allow the INEC chairman react further fuel his outbursts, as he said Jega would have to address the matter in his office like he did for the APC.<br />
<br />
“You are tribalistic. We will not take it. Until something is done. Jega has to look into our petition otherwise we won’t take it.”<br />
<br />
“He cannot reply here. We complained to him in his office he did not answer us. He even threw the paper at us,” Orubebe alleged.<br />
<br />
While security agencies at the premises looked on helpless as the former minister held on to the microphone and refused to allow the INEC chairman speak, other agents and international observers at the venue made comments like “this action by PDP is very shameful”.<br />
<br />
However, the intervention of Col. Bello Fadile, another PDP agent at the centre calmed the situation as he urged the INEC chairman to respond to the issues raised.<br />

In a statement on Wednesday, Obama congratulated General Buhari on his election and President Jonathan for conceding defeat.<br />

<b>The Governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, yesterday, described the victory of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), as the best thing to happen to a country that has endured 16 years of misrule at the centre.</b><br />

He said Nigeria has finally been rescued from the jaws of death after 16 years of social, political and economic strains.<br />
<br />
Aregbesola, in a statement by the Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Office of the Governor, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, congratulated Nigerians for the doggedness, perseverance and commitment to voting out a party that had held them hostage for 16 years.<br />

Describing Buhari’s victory as the best thing that could happen to a nation under political and economic strains like Nigeria, the Governor said the overall results of the elections and the general conducts of the electorate demonstrated that Nigerians really wanted change in the country.<br />

<b>The European Union and France have congratulated the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and challenged him to focus on the challenges and opportunities ahead.</b><br />
<br />
The High Representative and EU Vice-President, Federica Mogherini, in a statement on Wednesday on the presidential elections in Nigeria, thanked President Goodluck Jonathan for his great contribution to building the country and to consolidating its democracy over the past five years.<br />
<br />
The VP said the EU looks forward to working with Buhari and his government in the future.<br />
<br />
She acknowledged the candidates that have conceded defeat gracefully and urged those  who wish to contest the results to do so through the appropriate procedures.<br />
<br />
Mogherini said the EU Election Monitoring Mission would remain to monitor the governorship elections on April, 11 “which it is hoped will be conducted in the same peaceful and democratic spirit.”<br />
<br />
She said, “Nigerians can now look forward to focusing on the many challenges and opportunities that lie ahead of the country. The European Union has been a close partner for Nigeria over the past 50 years, and will continue to support its development and to share its values in promoting peace, prosperity and democracy on the continent and in the world.”<br />
<br />
President of the Republic of France, Francois Hollande, who  also congratulated Muhammadu Buhari on his election as President of Nigeria, welcomed the commitment of Nigerians and the quality of work of the Independent National Electoral Commission.<br />
<br />
A statement from the French Embassy in Abuja on Wednesday, said that Hollande would speak with Buhari on Thursday, adding that the French government intends to establish with him the trustful relations it had with President  Jonathan.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, the Head of ECOWAS Election Observation Mission, former Ghanaian President John Kufuor and his colleagues from the African Union and the Commonwealth have congratulated Nigeria’s National Peace Committee for its work.<br />
<br />
They called on Nigerians to carry through the entire electoral process the maturity and discipline displayed during the presidential and federal legislative elections, the <b><a href="http://www.punchng.com/news/focus-on-challenges-ahead-eu-tells-buhari/">PUNCH</a></b> reports.<br />
