If this weekend’s vote is delayed, disrupted or canceled, it will imperil the democratic future of Africa’s most populous country.</b><br /> <br /> This election is unlike any other in Nigerian history. President Goodluck Jonathan’s Peoples Democratic Party is facing the first credible challenge to a ruling party, and he is intent on staying in power, even though popular discontent with the P.D.P. is rife.<br /> <br /> If the election had been held as scheduled on Feb. 14, it is likely that Gen. Muhammadu Buhari of the opposition All Progressives Congress would have won. The six-week delay broke the A.P.C.’s momentum and gave the P.D.P. time to reverse the tide. Incumbency guarantees access to the treasury and command of the security forces - the first is in play now, and the second could be during the election and its aftermath.<br /> <br /> Nigerian politics can be murderous; Mr. Buhari has already survived one attempted assassination, an October bombing in Kaduna. And if there is another postponement, a contrived disruption on election day that leads to an unconstitutional interim arrangement, or if the election results do not appear credible, Nigeria could erupt in violence.<br /> <br /> Although Nigerians have often been divided along ethnic, religious and regional lines, there has been a remarkable change. Until quite recently, southern Nigerians overwhelmingly supported Mr. Jonathan, a southern Christian. That view prevailed in 2011, when Mr. Buhari also ran for president. The influential Lagos press portrayed him as a dictatorial, fanatical Muslim seeking to impose Shariah on the whole country despite the fact that Christians were a majority in his cabinet when he ruled the country in the mid-1980s.<br /> <br /> But daily life has worsened and corruption has escalated. Last year, Mr. Jonathan removed from office the respected governor of the Central Bank, Lamido Sanusi, after Mr. Sanusi announced that in one 15-month period at least $20 billion in government funds went unaccounted for. (The government recently claimed that an audit had found that “only $1.47 billion” was missing).<br /> <br /> Meanwhile, the same central government has failed to send money it owes to the states, and teachers and other civil servants have gone unpaid. Currency devaluation and inflation mean that unpaid and laid-off workers in the public and private sectors are now in the same boat as the country’s impoverished and jobless millions. They are unlikely to vote for the status quo.<br /> <br /> There have been military humiliations, too. Nigerians are embarrassed that their army needed reinforcements from smaller, poorer neighbors like Chad, Niger and Cameroon to reclaim northern towns from the terrorist group, Boko Haram. In fact, no Nigerian troops were present in some of the liberated towns. Worse, the government is hiring South African mercenaries for $400 a day in a country where soldiers are paid much less, often late, or not at all.<br /> <br /> Frontline troops have long complained they did not have adequate equipment or sufficient ammunition. But according to the government’s own figures, a quarter of federal budgets since 2010 have been allotted to security. Many Nigerians conclude that the money has gone to enrich the army top brass and their civilian colleagues.<br /> <br /> The February election was supposedly postponed so that the military could focus on the offensive it has now launched against Boko Haram. But the government’s priority doesn’t appear to be protecting Nigeria’s people and territory; its goal is to stay in power. The postponement has simply allowed the ruling party more time to spend money the opposition cannot match.<br /> <br /> Many Nigerians now see Mr. Buhari as the man who can deliver them from corruption and insecurity. He was Nigeria’s military ruler from 1984-85. He was petroleum minister before that. And in the late 1990s, as a civilian, he chaired the Petroleum Trust Fund. He could have enriched himself, but he did not. In the 1980s, he repelled a Chadian invasion and acted decisively against an earlier extremist Muslim group. As Adeyemi Adefulu, a Yoruba civil servant who was unjustly imprisoned under Mr. Buhari’s regime during sweeping arrests of the allegedly corrupt in the 1980s, wrote recently, “Our jailer has become our hope.” He is now actively campaigning for Mr. Buhari.<br /> <br /> With so much at stake, the United States must play a constructive role. Secretary of State John Kerry has stressed that the election must take place on Saturday and that it be “free, transparent and credible.” And Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. last week expressed support for the electoral commission and urged electronic authentication of voters.<br /> <br /> More is needed. America must publicly insist on retaining the head of the electoral commission, preventing any election-day violence or intimidation by security forces, and announcing results at each polling place. And voters should not be prevented from using mobile phones to photograph local results as a precaution against later rigging.<br /> <br /> This election must not be stolen from the people. Mr. Kerry has suggested that visa restrictions could be placed on anyone who interferes with the electoral process. This policy, along with a threat of targeted financial sanctions, should be announced now and it should include members of Nigeria’s security forces.<br /> <br /> The global fall in oil prices, Nigeria’s squandered foreign reserves and the draining of an account intended to cushion price shocks mean that Nigerians face hard times ahead. Much as I respect the office of the President, I must confess the office has been so diminished by the present occupant of the Aso Villa that it does not deserve the respect of any self-respecting Nigerian.</b><br /> <br /> At every given opportunity, Jonathan has been embarrassing the country and Nigerians, all in his desperation to retain power by all means possible. We have been forced to listen to the president’s fables in the past five weeks after he and his security goons forced Attahiru Jega to shift the general elections earlier scheduled to take place in February. Not content with churning out barefaced lies by him and his crude spokesmen, Jonathan has upped the ante of embarrassment by lying against a fellow country’s leader and to the international community through his interview with the <b>BBC</b>.<br /> <br /> Before the dust settled on the Moroccan phone call scandal, Jonathan told Will Ross of the BBC that he is not desperate to win the 2015 election, something I find insulting to me. If he is not desperate to win the election then can he explain the unnecessary tension he has been subjecting us to in the past six months or so? It will be a herculean task to attempt to list all the desperate moves Jonathan made in order to win the 2015 election by crook - he doesn't care about the 'hook'. But let us attempt to itemise them, anyway.<br /> <br /> Supporter of incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan, wears a mask with his image, during an election campaign rally in Lagos.<br /> <br /> The contrived "adoption" of Jonathan by all the organs of his party, the PDP, which culminated in his coronation as the sole candidate for the presidential election, was purely because of his desperation to avoid facing a credible - or even an alternative - candidate in his party. The party and its apparatchik made sure no one was allowed to challenge Jonathan because of the fear of rejection by his party men. If this was not a desperate move, what is? The INEC fixed February 14th, 2015 as the date for the presidential elections but the commission was forced to eat humble pie by Jonathan and his party because they saw defeat facing in the face and the only thing they came up was the insecurity boogie.<br /> <br /> The elections were shifted in order to give Jonathan and the PDP more time to corrupt the system and the populace. If this is not desperation, what is?<br /> <br /> We have seen the heightened level of criss-crossing the country including Jonathan’s temporary relocation to Lagos and the states of the south west while Namadi(na) relocated to Kano and Kaduna, distributing money like confetti to voters. They were unmindful of the damage they were doing to the electoral process. If this is not desperation, what is? The series of fictional documentaries produced and directed by his campaign team (which is made up of people with questionable characters) trying to smear the presidential candidate of the APC and the leadership of the party falls into the desperate pattern which must have been directly approved by Jonathan himself.  If this smear campaign is not desperation, what is? The newfound bravery of our armed forces in attacking and chasing Boko Haram insurgents from hitherto occupied towns and villages after six years of running from the rag-tag insurgents says a lot about the government’s commitment or otherwise in fighting the scourge.<br /> <br /> We suddenly have the "ferocious" Boko Haram elements running with their tails between their legs at the sight of the Nigerian army. It took the smell of defeat before Jonathan got serious about the sanctity of human life, if this is not desperation, what is?<br /> <br /> With a naval force and the Civil Defence, Jonathan decides in his wisdom to outsource the protection of our shores and pipelines to criminals who are euphemistically called ex-militants by a media wowed by brown envelopes and sectional mind-set. These are the same guys who routinely break the pipelines and steal oil, yet are now rewarded for their criminality. This comes barely two weeks to the presidential election. May I suggest that since there are oil depots in Maiduguri, Bauchi, and Yola - areas considered spheres of influence of Boko Haram - the protection contracts should be extended to Boko Haram and other militants in Plateau, Nassarawa and Benue states to make the reward system for treason and murder national in outlook. This is not desperation but an avenue for creating employment for youths from a section of the country to the detriment of other areas.<br /> <br /> Then the persistent call for the sack of Jega as INEC chairman before the conduct of the 2015 elections. The calls range from pseudo-statesmen like Ekwueme, to old militants like Edwin Clark, to oil thieves like Asari Dokubo and Tompolo and those with blood on their hands like Gani Adams.<br /> <br /> These are Jonathan’s current bedmates whose main bond is the prevention of General Buhari from winning the elections and sending them to oblivion or the gulag, where they rightly belong. <br /> <br /> Not desperate? Try this. In his desperation to cling to power, Jonathan is not loath to use the ethno-religious card, unmindful that this road may lead us to Kigali. With the Abidjan scenario becoming more real to Jonathan, he would rather that Nigeria take the Kigali road. His dim wife has been traversing the country inciting jobless, hungry youths against the opposition and in the process insulting her betters.<br /> <br /> Jonathan is desperately desperate and he shouldn't deny that. For a chief security of a country to be seen hob-knobbing with treasonable felons like Asari Dokubo, Gani Adams, the MASSOB guys and the rest of the oil thieves a few days to a national elections says much about his frame of mind.<br /> <br /> Though Jonathan and his wife have been trying to give new meanings to certain actions like corruption and stealing, they can’t change the meaning of desperation. They are desperate to cling to power at whatever cost to the nation and Nigerians shouldn't make the mistake of lowering their guards believing that Jonathan is not desperate. The wife, who wants to remain the First Lady, but behaves like an unrefined street food hawker, in her characteristic dimness, let out her fears of facing her just desserts when she said she is not ready to feed her husband in jail.<br /> <br /> It was Gbagbo’s desperation that plunge Ivory Coast into a needless war in 2010; it was also the insensitive insults by journalists and politicians that led to the massacre of over 800,000 innocent souls in Rwanda in 1994. Nigerians should be mindful of desperate politicians who would rather the country disintegrate than them losing the paraphernalia of office. The Jonathans have done enough damage to an already fragile union. The woman, who cannot be named to protect her dignity, lives in Ngwamtila village near Bushbuckridge.</b><br /> <br /> Her husband, whose name is known to <b>African Eye News Service</b>, allegedly put the super glue on her vagina on 9 March 2013, after accusing her of cheating on him with her uncle.<br /> <br /> “My husband was an abusive man for many years. His abuse spiralled out of control when my uncle dropped me off at our home. He then accused me of cheating on him with my uncle. It was shocking because he knew my uncle well and even greeted him nicely when he dropped me off,” says the woman.<br /> <br /> She said after screaming at her he told her that he would teach her a lesson. “Every time the month of March comes along I remember the cruelty that he showed me. He took out a <i>panga</i> and ordered me to take off my clothes. As I started doing that he told me that if I didn’t do it he would chop off my head with the <i>panga</i>. He had previously tried to chop off my hand with the <i>panga</i> but I managed to escape. This time I could not escape.<br /> <br /> “He then ordered me to lie down and open my legs. He then took out super glue and applied it on my vagina while I looked at him with horror and tears streaming down my face. I do not know what would make a man who loves a woman do that to her,” she said.<br /> <br /> Asked if her husband was ever arrested for his cruel actions she said: “I wanted to press charges but he fled and has not been seen since the incident. With no fewer than seven wives and many girlfriends, he is also the darling of many ladies. His media company, DAAR Communications, is also a household name. With its Raypower and AIT, radio and television stations, DAAR has revolutionised the broadcast media industry with quality content and programming.<br /> <br /> But just as the saying goes ‘that behind every successful business, there is a tale’ Dokpesi’s case is not an exception. The tales of this <i>Ezomo</i> of Weppa Wanno Kingdom are however not all about hard work and perseverance but also of fraud and deceit. Dokpesi’s numerous fraudulent schemes reached the summit in 2009 when Nigeria hosted the Under 17 Junior World Cup. Daar Communications was granted the broadcast right for the tournament by the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA). But in an intriguing plot, Dokpesi approached then President Umaru Yar’Adua demanding payment for broadcasting the football tournament. In an invoice sent to the central government entitled, DAAR-FIFA HOST BROADCASTER BUDGET, Dokpesi demanded ₦5 billion to defray the company’s cost.<br /> <br /> Since the Federal Government did not enter into any contract with Dokpesi and DAAR on the tournament, a perplexed Yar’Adua asked for briefing from his aides. According to a report by <b>SaharaReporters</b> in August 2010, the Director-General of the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission advised government not to accede to the ‘bogus request’, more because the technical facilities DAAR was going to use for the broadcast, belonged to the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, owned by the Federal Government. There were also reports by several committees, which recommended the non-payment of the bill.<br /> <br /> Yar’Adua thus stoutly declined payment, despite the intervention of his vice-president, Goodluck Jonathan, who then chaired the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the tournament. Even when AIT blackmailed the LOC that it would not broadcast the final of the game and demanded a reduced amount of ₦3.5billion, to enable it pay creditors such as MTN that provided some Internet links, government refused to budge. The reduced amount followed the advice of a presidential committee on Harmonisation and Negotiation headed by Patrick Ekeji, the Director-General of the National Sports Commission. It was set up by Jonathan’s LOC. But Yar’Adua stuck to his guns, as he saw no sense in paying for a service the government did not ask for in the first instance.<br /> <br /> Yar’Adua died in April 2010 and Dokpesi warmed his way into the heart of Goodluck Jonathan, his successor. This chummy relationship did not come easy. Dokpesi was part of the Pastor Bakare’s inspired <i>Save Nigeria Group</i> that mobilised public support for Jonathan, in the succession crisis that came in the wake of Yar’Adua’s grave illness and eventual death. But after Jonathan became the president and he still did not pay AIT’s ₦3.5 billion bill, Dokpesi abandoned Jonathan and embraced former military president, Ibrahim Babangida, to work as the Director-General of his campaign. Babangida wanted to challenge Jonathan for the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).<br /> <br /> When Babangida’s campaign collapsed, Dokpesi ran back again to Jonathan, using the platform of the South-South Leadership Forum. He was desperate at this time to curry Jonathan’s affection, not just for money but his survival. When bombs were detonated at the Eagle Square, Abuja, during the 1 October, 2010 independence anniversary, killing and wounding scores of people, Dokpesi was indicted and arrested by security agencies. They accused him of having links with the leader of MEND, Henry Okah who is currently serving a jail term in a South African prison.<br /> <br /> A rattled Dokpesi quickly retraced his steps and began series of reconciliatory moves with President Jonathan. This medium learnt that as part of the peace deal, Dokpesi pledged to make his station available for the pursuit of Jonathan’s political goals, making his stations available as the publicity arm of the Jonathan presidency, doing it with even greater fervour than the NTA and Radio Nigeria. As he warmed his way back into Jonathan’s heart, he presented again in 2011, the bill government had rejected to honour in the past. Inexplicably, the pruned down ₦3.5 billion bogus bill, had ballooned to ₦8.047 billion.<br /> <br /> Speaking on the issue in an interview granted to Kayode Ogundamisi and published in <i>Sahara Reporters</i> on October 18, 2010, Chief Edwin Clark branded Dokpesi as a cheat and dishonest person. Chief Clark was quoted in the interview: “They (federal government) are not owing him any money. He is a cheat. The Federal Government has set up a committee; they've looked into that case. It was NTA that covered the event”. The presidency simply ignored the observation of Chief Clark and decided to pay the fraudulent claim.<br /> <br /> That was, however, the beginning of an intricate web of illicit financial transactions involving Dokpesi, the Presidency, the Federal Ministry of Finance and some private sector bankers. On the strength of the president’s promise, Dokpesi approached First Bank to open an account in the name of DAAR Communications at the Asokoro branch in Abuja. Contrary to the law, Dokpesi was and remains the sole signatory to the account even though as a company quoted on the Nigerian Stock Exchange, its accounts should be operated through the Director of Finance and one or two other signatories. The Asokoro account was later closed, but a new one also in the name of DAAR Communication was opened at the Maitama branch.<br /> <br /> Precisely on the 27 January 2012, the fraudulent fund of ₦8,047,275,290.99 (eight billion, forty seven million, two hundred and seventy five thousand, two hundred and ninety naira, ninety nine kobo) was paid into the account with number 2017679134. In a letter dated 28 January 2012 and signed by both the Business and Relationship officers of the bank, Susan Abuh and Bukola Adeojo, the Maitama First Bank branch management acknowledged the payment. The acknowledgment letter reads: “ We write to inform you that we received the sum of Eight Billion Forty Seven Million Two Hundred and Seventy Five Thousand and Ninety Nine kobo only, (₦8,047,275,290.99) into the above stated account domiciled with us in Maitama office on 27 January, 2012. This letter serves to bring to your knowledge that the said amount has been credited into DAAR Communications Plc account…” With the connivance of the bank, Dokpesi continued to run the account alone, contrary to extant financial regulations for quoted companies.<br /> <br /> Surprisingly, even after receiving such a humongous amount of money purportedly on behalf of DAAR Communications, Dokpesi never thought of paying dividends to shareholders, who have not been paid any dividends since the company became PLC about seven years ago. Rather, the money was drawn down almost to zero, within three months. Payments were made into Dokpesi’s personal domiciliary account with number 2017451925. At a point, this account contained over a million dollars. Part of the money also went in form of thousands of dollars into Dokpesi’s VISA Gold Account number 3071078978.<br /> <br /> Fidelity Bank that had taken DAAR to court and had gotten judgement to take over the company’s assets for debt calculated at ₦7.5 billion was paid ₦4.2 billion on 14 February. Part of the money was also used to open Letters of Credit (LCs) for DAAR, ostensibly to buy equipment for the broadcasting outfit. All his wives and mistresses were also well accommodated on the account, with amounts ranging from ₦2.5 million to ₦5 million. The National Broadcasting Commission was also paid ₦400 million from the account on 31 January. On 1 February, the construction company, Dantata Sawoe also got ₦400 million, possibly in connection with the multi-billion mansion of the media mogul, now completed in Abuja. By 3 April 2012, the balance on the account was below ₦60, 000.<br /> <br /> Chief Dokpesi however longed for new funds to swell the account all over again. Relying on the same documents used to fraudulently collect the ₦8.04 billion as authorised by President Jonathan, he mischievously tried to dupe the Federal Government by collecting the same money twice. This medium learnt that Dokpesi’s attempt to collect double payment for the same project involved an intricate web of bribes to unscrupulous officials in the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the office of the Accountant General and even the presidential villa.<br /> <br /> Anticipating that the attempt to collect the second fraudulent payment for a ‘phantom job’ he had already been paid for would succeed, Dokpesi even agreed on a sharing formula with some people in the Villa, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Justice and the CBN. His banker friend and confidante was to handle the distribution via series of blank First Bank transfer forms already signed down by Dokpesi. For instance, the sum of ₦2 billion was to have been transferred to an account of B.T OIL & GAS NIG. LTD with account number 2020605922 domiciled in the First Bank, Aminu Kano branch, Abuja.<br /> <br /> Still in anticipation of receiving this money, Dokpesi, through DAAR Investment and Holding Company, applied to First Bank, Maitama Branch, for a facility of ₦160 million. The bank refused the request on the grounds that it had no information on the receivable to be discounted which is said to be related to the contract executed since 2009. “Parent Company has a bad loan which ₦95 million was written off the bank’s books. The rule is that such amount should be paid back if customer is to enjoy another facility with the bank; Not a fair risk and no easily available fall back position for the bank”, the bank said.<br /> <br /> Dokpesi’s long expectation was however dashed when a vigilant official at the CBN revealed that the money being demanded had been paid before and the whole process was terminated.<br /> <br /> Another alleged audacious fraudulent venture by Dokpesi was his alleged plot to hack into account number 60959146 with SORT CODE 201334, belonging to one Dr Haggai I. Ali with Barclays Bank, Queens Road Branch, and Bristol, UK. Papers stumbled upon by <b>TheNEWS</b>, showed that it was an elaborate scheme to defraud the bank as well as Barclays Bank of UK to the tune of 800,000,000 Euro. The transaction was to have been conducted through Deutsche Frankfurt, Dubai and the money to be received through DAAR Investment and Holding Company with account number 1000086988.<br /> <br /> A letter to First Bank personally signed by Dokpesi and dated 15 April, 2013, had requested the bank to “issue a letter in favour of Messrs CIGALE FINANCE SA, 5 RUE AUNIR, NOGENT SUR MARINE 94130, FRANCE”. The letter claimed that DAAR Investment and Holding Company was arranging funds to the tune of 800,000,000 Euro in two tranches of 300,000,000 Euro and 500,000,000 Euro “for the funding of DAAR Communications Plc expansion programme as well as other investment projects in the Nigerian economy”. He concluded the letter thus: “Messrs Cigale Finance SA have requested us to obtain a letter from our bank confirming its willingness to receive the funds into our account and disburse same in accordance with provisions of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which is attached for your perusal”.<br /> <br /> On 30 April 2013, First Bank wrote Cigale Finance SA accepting the offer and confirming that DAAR Investment and Holding Company Limited was one of its well-known customers. Part of the letter reads: “We further pledge that we will abide strictly by the terms of the MoU duly executed by both parties,” First Bank wrote.<br /> <br /> It was, however, discovered that all the documents cited by DAAR Investment as regards the purported 500,000,000 Euro investment were fake. The Memorandum of Understanding between DAAR Investment and Cigale Finance SA was a complete ruse. One of those who signed the MoU on behalf of DAAR Investment, Godfrey Usifoh, was also discovered to have falsely claimed to be a banker. Usifoh was indeed a staff of DAAR Communications and an aide of Dokpesi. Upon further enquiries by First Bank, Deutsche Bank confirmed that there was no transaction of that magnitude which was to come in two tranches of 300,000,000 Euro and 500,000,000 Euro in their coffers. The bank also called its Maitama branch to warn that it was an attempted fraud.<br /> <br /> But life goes on for the Agenebode-born media chief. At the moment, his media organs remain the biggest megaphones for the Goodluck Jonathan campaign; turning them to mount baseless muckraking, hate campaigns against leaders of the opposition. The AIT, oblivious of its middle name as ‘independent’, has become the willing tool of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, showing libelous and hate documentaries against General Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the party’s national leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.<br /> <br /> Some media stakeholders said Dokpesi’s media empire is only performing a service to President Jonathan and the PDP, having been paid close to $50 million by the President’s campaign.<br /> <br /> However, when <b>TheNEWS</b> contacted Dokpesi for his reaction, he asked his aides to handle the matter. They asked that we wait till the following day. The streets are crowded, even at 2am.<br /> <br /> Everyone talks politics and the return of a military dictator who may save Lagosians from a President seen as both weak and corrupt.<br /> <br /> The 20 million who live in Lagos consider themselves to be the toughest people on earth. And ever a city to buck a trend, its majority Christian population is likely to vote for a Muslim ex-dictator in this Saturday’s presidential election.<br /> <br /> For many in Nigeria, the elections are seen as a choice between Goodluck Jonathan - the weak President who has failed to defeat the Boko Haram insurgency in the north-east and has not improved the lives of millions of poor - and Muhammadu Buhari,  a former military ruler.<br /> <br /> General Buhari has retired from the army but is still widely referred to by his rank. He will hope to be democratically elected president at the third successive attempt. Defeats at the 2011, and 2007 elections have not discouraged the one-time dictator. His All Progressives Congress (APC) party believes its anti-corruption platform has resonated among a population struggling to make ends meet. Lagos alone has more than 9,000 millionaires, but most people live a hand-to-mouth existence.<br /> <br /> When $20bn went missing from state funds last year, few people were surprised. The APC made hay. Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, told a campaign rally this month: “The Burj Khalifa building in Dubai was built with $1.5bn to arrest the attention of the world. This administration has lost $20bn.”<br /> <br /> The missing money was still on Lagosians’ minds this week. “How can $20bn be stolen? It has legs and it can walk?” said Tolu, a 33-year-old philanthropist.<br /> <br /> Mr Buhari is seen as incorruptible. While leading a military government between 1983 and 1985, he rejected the opportunity to enrich himself in a nation containing vast oil reserves, he says. Many supporters believe the APC is the only credible party that can oversee Africa’s largest, stuttering, oil-dependent economy.<br /> <br /> Voters in the APC stronghold of Lagos view Mr Buhari as the leader determined to end the theft of state funds. “We’re still poor and yet we have all this oil, it doesn’t make sense. Even though I’m a Christian I have no problem voting Buhari. We need change,” said Shola, a taxi driver.<br /> <br /> Mr Buhari is not without his detractors, however. While in power, he imprisoned and silenced scores of journalists, including  the playwright Wole Soyinka, who remembers him as a “villainous despot”.<br /> <br /> To many of his opponents, Mr Buhari is loathed for implementing an infamous policy - the “war on indiscipline”. Civil servants late for work were humiliated by being forced to do frog jumps repeatedly, while commuters were whipped for not forming orderly queues. “Who would possibly want to go back to this time?
