<b>The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, bowed out on Tuesday, handing over the leadership of the legislature to his Deputy, Mr. Emeka Ihedioha, who will round off the tenure of the House on June 5.</b></div>

Tambuwal, who is the Governor-elect for Sokoto State, will be inaugurated on May 29 (Friday) as governor.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
His decision to transfer power to Ihedioha ahead of May 29 was to avoid a possible constitutional crisis of taking oath of office for two separate offices.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While he will be inaugurated as governor on May 29, his current tenure as a member of the House will terminate on June 6.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tambuwal, who spoke with journalists soon after Tuesday's sitting of the House, disclosed that the members agreed at an executive session that Ihedioha should preside over the affairs of the House till June 6.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
“My stay here in the House would have effectively come to a end on May 29 after I would have been inaugurated as governor.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“We have to avoid any possible issues on this, since the constitution is silent on what happens when a sitting Speaker has to move to another office,” he added.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to him, the 1999 Constitution does not envisage a situation where the Speaker will leave one office for another, while the oath taken for the current one is subsisting.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, he noted that under the Standing Orders of the House, a Speaker Pro-tempore was required to be elected by members to run the House for any period the substantive Speaker would not be available.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
But he explained that the extant case was different because he would not return to the House anymore.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“At our executive session, a member came up with an ingenious way of dealing with the matter on hand, which members accepted.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“He came up with the idea that the portion of the House rules in question should be suspended to enable the Deputy Speaker to continue to preside over the House instead of electing a new Speaker,” Tambiwal added.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tambuwal stated that the other alternative would have been to shut down the House before June 6, but said he was not in support of such a move.</div>

“I won't shut down the House. The House can sit tomorrow, Thursday and possibly the other sitting days of next week,” he said.</div>

<b>A woman accused of being a kidnapper has been arrested by residents of Qadri Close in the Ojuelegba area of Lagos. The suspect was allegedly nabbed with a seven-year-old girl, identified only as Khadijat.</b></div>

The suspected abductor, Mrs. Grace Uduak, said to be in her 30s, had reportedly lured the girl with puffpuff around 10am and was about to leave the neighbourhood when she was rounded up.</div>

Information learnt that the suspect called Khadijat, who was in her parents’ house, and gave her the puffpuff. She was said to have told the little girl to follow her.</div>

A resident, Joseph Adebiyi, said Uduak initially whispered into Khadijat’s ears after which she gave her the snack.</div>

He said when residents of the area confronted the suspect, she told them she was pressed and wanted the girl to lead her to a toilet in the area.</div>

He said: "I was with a friend when I saw Mariam - Khadijat's neighbour - running after the woman. The woman had already walked four houses from the building where she abducted the girl before Mariam met up with her and challenged her. I moved closer to them to know what happened. She said the girl wanted to take her to a toilet.</div>

"The girl was brought to Lagos by her aunty three days before the incident. The aunty was not around at that time. That house is usually deserted. She actually went into the house to pick her".</div>

Adebiyi said traders in the area initially wanted the woman to be freed, but he and other residents insisted that she be handed over to the police.</div>

<b>Justice Ibrahim Bubba, of the Federal High Court in Lagos, has ordered the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to vacate the residence and properties of Senator-elect Buruji Kashamu. </b></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mr. Kashamu has been under House Arrest since the early hours of Saturday, when the NDLEA swarmed around his house.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mr. Kashamu is currently wanted by the United States on charges of narcotics trafficking. He was incarcerated on similar charges in the United Kingdom, but released before his extradition to the United States.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The NDLEA issued press statements saying that Mr. Kashamu was placed under House Arrest so that it would be certain that he appear before the court on Monday May 25, for a ruling whether an extradition process to the United States would begin. However, the NDLEA was unable to bring Mr. Kashamu to court on Monday.</div>

Mr. Kashamu's lawyer, Ajibola Oluyede, spoke with <i>SaharaReporters</i> today and said that "the court order is a direct result of the motion I submitted yesterday, telling the court that what the Attorney General and NDLEA were doing was unlawful". The motion stated that the Attorney General, Mr. Adoke, and the Chairman of the NDLEA were in violation of Mr. Kashamu’s human rights.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
"We have now issued charges against the Attorney General and the NDLEA for criminal conduct for how they carried themselves", Mr. Oluyede told a <i>SaharaReporters</i> correspondent.</div>

He added: "they must now return to court on June 4th to answer these charges".</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mr. Oluyede also stated that "it is clear that the original purpose of this invasion was to kidnap him [Mr. Kashamu] and ship him off to the US, in violation of the Extradition Act".</div>

"No arrest warrant was issued by the court, which means they [the Attorney General and NDLEA] never intended to follow legal procedure", he said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Mr. Oluyede then revealed that he received information that, "their [the NDLEA and Attorney General] first plan was to abduct him on Saturday and ship him off to the US. It was only when this failed that they started talking about taking him to court".</div>

Mr. Oluyede also told <i>SaharaReporters</i> that it is obvious that former President Olusegun Obasanjo was behind the latest efforts to arrest Senator-elect Kashamu. </div>

"Prince Kashamu is the political nemesis of Obasanjo, who has now lost relevance in the South West".</div>

"Obasanjo is now a paper weight electorally in Nigeria, he may have international clout but he cannot get votes for people in Nigeria", Mr. Oluyede said.</div>

The NDLEA Head of Public Affairs, Mr. Ofoyeju Mitchell, told <i>SaharaReporters</i> that "the NDLEA has not received any court order to vacate Mr. Kashamu's residence and we believe any order to vacate his residence is diversionary".</div>

Mr. Mitchell also stated that "the NDLEA refuses to be distracted by his court maneuvers and advises that Kashamu respect the law by submitting himself to the due process of the law".</div>

Mr. Mitchell also stated that it is false to suggest that the NDLEA has acted unlawfully, "we received a provisional warrant from the Federal High Court".</div>

A statement by NANS President, Tijani Usman, noted that Zuma’s inability to "apologise to Nigerians like he did to Mozambique", despite the sacrifices the country made for South Africa, was unfortunate.</div>

He was reportedly  received at the door of the aircraft by the Nigerian high commissioner, Senator Dalhatu Tafida, and rode in the embassy official car to his usual central London holiday flat booked by his brother after rejecting the hotel booked for him by the embassy.</div>

<b>The Lagos State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal on Tuesday granted leave to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to inspect documents and gadgets used in the April 11 gubernatorial elections.</b></div>

The tribunal Chairman, Justice Muhammad Sirajo, gave the order when he ruled on an application filed by the APC Counsel, Chief Charles Edosomwan (SAN).</div>

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Mr Jimi Agbaje, had challenged the election.</div>

Agbaje had alleged that there were some irregularities during the election which contravened the provisions of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s approved guidelines.</div>

Joined as co-respondents were: the governor-elect, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, INEC and INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Lagos State.</div>

In its ruling, the tribunal noted that the application was not opposed by the PDP and Agbaje’s Counsel, Mr Clement Onwuenwunor and INEC represented by Mr E.R. Emukpoeruo.</div>

The tribunal ordered INEC to provide Certified True Copies of all polling documents, including printed data in each polling units and the card readers.</div>

It also granted leave to the party to inspect, by way of machine/electronic scanning of all ballot papers and other electoral materials used in the election.</div>

Nothing elaborate at all.  It’s going to be an avenue for media interaction where everybody will be free to ask me any question about my life and career, be it positive or negative.  No holds barred.</div>

So, if people still can't believe that I lied then just to fit in, that means they need a reality check.  I am proud of my age.</div>

<b>A Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the more than 50 operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to immediately vacate the Lagos residence of the senator-elect for Ogun East Senatorial District, Mr. Buruji Kashamu.</b></div>

The NDLEA,  whose operatives had laid siege on Kashamu's residence in Lagos since Saturday, said it had received a formal extradition request on Kashamu from the government of the United States of America and was coming to court to secure an extradition order.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
But Justice Ibrahim Buba, in a bench ruling on Tuesday afternoon, pronounced the action of the NDLEA as sub-judice and ordered the men of the Nigerian police to ensure that NDLEA operatives vacate Kashamu's premises "without a free for all".</div>

However, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has denied a published report that its National Working Committee met on Monday night and decided to zone the Senate Presidency to the North-Central and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to the South-West, saying nothing like that ever happened.</div>

In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by its National Secretary, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, the party said it was deeply embarrassed by the story which was apparently planted in the media to sow the seeds of instability in the party.</div>

The NWC never discussed the issue of zoning at its meeting. Therefore, the report of its decision on zoning is a figment of the imagination of whoever concocted the story.</blockquote>

Apparently after hearing about the party's denial of his tweet position, Senator Saraki retraced his steps with another tweet some two hours after the first tweet, suggesting his call for a primary election to be conducted for the Senate Presidency like the party did during its presidential primaries.<br />
