Fellow Nigerians,<br />
<br />
I thank you all for turning out en-masse for the March 28 General Elections.<br />
<br />
I promised the country free and fair elections. I have kept my word. I have also expanded the space for Nigerians to participate in the democratic process. That is one legacy I will like to see endure.<br />
<br />
Although some people have expressed mixed feelings about the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), I urge those who may feel aggrieved to follow due process based on our constitution and our electoral laws, in seeking redress.<br />
<br />
As I have always affirmed, nobody’s ambition is worth the blood of any Nigerian. The unity, stability and progress of our dear country is more important than anything else.<br />
<br />
I congratulate all Nigerians for successfully going through the process of the March 28th General Elections with the commendable enthusiasm and commitment that was demonstrated nationwide.<br />
<br />
I also commend the Security Services for their role in ensuring that the elections were mostly peaceful and violence-free.<br />
<br />
To my colleagues in the PDP, I thank you for your support. Today, the PDP should be celebrating rather than mourning. We have established a legacy of democratic freedom, transparency, economic growth and free and fair elections.<br />
<br />
For the past 16 years, we have steered the country away from ethnic and regional politics. We created a Pan-Nigerian political party and brought home to our people the realities of economic development and social transformation.<br />
<br />
Through patriotism and diligence, we have built the biggest and most patriotic party in Nigerian history. We must stand together as a party and look to the future with renewed optimism.<br />
<br />
I thank all Nigerians once again for the great opportunity I was given to lead this country and assure you that I will continue to do my best at the helm of national affairs until the end of my tenure.<br />
<br />
I have conveyed my personal best wishes to General Muhammadu Buhari.<br />
<br />
May God Almighty continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.<br />

<br />
Muhammadu Buhari has just been elected as the next president of Nigeria by a margin of more than 2m votes because on the issues that mattered to Nigerians, he had more credibility than his rival, current president Goodluck Jonathan.<br />
<br />
Corruption and insecurity dominated the agenda of Nigeria’s most competitive presidential election since its return to democracy in 1999. Pew Research has shown that 72% of Nigerians are concerned about Islamic extremism while more than eight in 10 feel that corruption (86%) and crime (88%) are “very big” problems.<br />
<br />
Buhari and Jonathan both vowed to tackle these issues, especially with regards to Boko Haram, the Islamist terrorist group that has killed more than 13,000 Nigerians and displaced 1.5 million.<br />
<br />
But Buhari, a 72-year-old retired general, enjoyed advantages on these fronts from the start. His record as Nigeria’s hard-headed military ruler from 1983 to 1985 lent credence to his promises to crush the Boko Haram insurgency. His reputation as an incorruptible politician who lives modestly rendered his pledges to tackle government graft believable.<br />
<br />
Jonathan, on the other hand, couldn’t escape the fact that Boko Haram had grown in strength during his five years as president, or that he had failed to react swiftly to the kidnap of 276 girls from Chibok, most of whom are still missing.<br />
<br />
Only six weeks ago, the Nigerian army, together with soldiers from neighbouring countries, launched robust operations to recapture territory lost to the Islamists who had declared a caliphate on Nigerian soil. The recent military successes, while welcomed, left many Nigerians wondering why Jonathan waited until the eve of an election before getting serious on terrorism. Regarding corruption, numerous financial scandals involving government ministers and allegations of billions going missing from public coffers in recent years made it difficult for Jonathan to convince Nigerians that he was serious about tackling what is widely regarded as the country’s biggest curse.<br />
<br />
The president’s campaign did what it could to try to discredit Buhari, but in a haphazard fashion. One day Jonathan’s people would accuse Buhari, a Muslim, of wanting to introduce strict Sharia law throughout Nigeria, the next they’d insist he wants to legalise same-sex marriage. Buhari, for his part, exhibited grace under fire throughout the campaign, maintaining an air of dignity. His never-say-die attitude invited respect; this was his fourth attempt at the presidency.<br />
<br />
In the end, Nigerians responded in their millions to Buhari’s unoriginal yet effective slogan of “change”. People turned out to even in the troubled areas of the north-east, where Boko Haram had vowed to attack anyone who dared to vote.<br />
<br />
Nigeria has suffered from mediocre leadership for as long as I can remember. Most heads of state have been corrupt, small-minded men, incapable of seeing further than the ends of their own nose. A principled man in the presidential office is nothing short of revolutionary in Nigeria. The excited reactions to Buhari’s victory in various parts of the country attest to the hope he inspires in many.<br />
<br />
But his honeymoon with Nigerians will not last long. Millions of people believed in his message of change. Expectations are high and it will be easy to disappoint. It is not an easy country to govern.<br />
<br />
With government revenues reeling from the slump in oil prices and a fast-growing population expected to reach 210 million by 2020 amidst high unemployment, Buhari will have his work cut out. If history is anything to go by, he will delegate economic policy to technocrats, and focus his own energies on tackling insecurity and reducing corruption in government.<br />
<br />
But whatever happens, Nigeria will never be the same again. Something has changed in the psyche of the Nigerian citizen. For the first time since independence in 1960, Nigerians have defenestrated a sitting president. The masses now realise the tremendous might they can wield when they act collectively. It is a lesson that will embolden them. The era when Nigeria’s rulers could take the people for granted is no more.<br />

<b>Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has congratulated the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd) on his victory in the presidential poll, charging him to fight corruption and carry out reforms in different sectors.</b><br />

The congratulatory message was made available to our correspondent at Abeokuta on Tuesday following Buhari victory in the March 28 presidential election.<br />
<br />
Obasanjo, who noted that so much harm had already been done to many national institutions, including the military, however, advised him to be magnanimous in victory.<br />
<br />
He said, "With so much harm already done to many national institutions including the military, which proudly nurtured you and me, you will have a lot to do on institution reform – education, healthcare, economy, security, infrastructure, power, youth employment, agri-business, oil and gas, external affairs, cohesiveness of our nation and ridding our land of corruption.<br />
<br />
"Your varied and wide experience will undoubtedly stand you in good stead."<br />
<br />
The former president said the country "is blessed with men and women of goodwill, character and virtue across the board that you can mobilise to join hands with you in the reform, repairs and re- direction that will be imperative to put Nigeria back on the fast lane of good governance, unity, cohesiveness, development and progress."<br />
<br />
Obasanjo noted that Buhari’s victory, after three previous unsuccessful attempts, must be a great lesson to himself and for all politicians, particularly in Nigeria.<br />
<br />
He said, "For me, the totality of 2015 elections hold many lessons for our democracy and democratisation process, which are both maturing.<br />
<br />
"On this occasion, the system has been unnecessarily overheated before and particularly during the campaigns when emphasis was more on trivialities and hate, divisive, undignifying and disrespectful statements and comments rather than on pressing issues requiring attention.<br />
<br />
"I know that in victory, you will be magnanimous to start binding the wounds and bitterness occasioned by the campaign and the evil disciples."<br />

<b>The Northern States Governors Forum has congratulated the President-elect of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, over his success at the 2015 presidential poll.</b><br />

The chairman of the forum and Governor of Niger State, Mu’azu Aliyu,  in a press statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Israel Ebije, said the victory of the All Progressive Congress should be seen as victory for Nigerian democracy and collective progress of the nation.<br />

Mr. Muazu also hailed President Goodluck Jonathan for conceding defeat, saying he had exhibited the tenets of a true democrat. He said history would remember Mr. Jonathan for his political maturity.<br />
Mr. Aliyu, who lost his bid to be elected a senator to APC candidate, David Umar, congratulated his colleagues who got elected to the National Assembly as senators.<br />
<br />
He urged them to engage in national discuss in the best way possible to advance Nigerian democracy to the height it deserves and also to serve the people with the best dividend of democracy.<br />
<br />
He also urged his colleagues who lost to see it as an act of God. He said they should always avail themselves for national duties as the outcome of this election must not affect their contribution to the progress and development of Nigeria.<br />
<br />
“Let me on behalf of my colleagues in the Northern States Governors Forum congratulate the president-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari over his success at the president polls,” he said.<br />
<br />
“It is indeed triumph for democracy and indeed the decision of Nigerians.<br />
<br />
“I also thank the president of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for accepting the outcome of the election. He has indeed shown he is a statesman and posterity will forever remember him for his decision to allow a free and fair election.”<br />

<b>Lai Mohammed, APC spokesman calls Goodluck Jonathan a 'hero' for conceding ‘it will calm everything’ he says.</b><br />

“President Jonathan called General Muhammadu Buhari, the winner of the elections, to congratulate him,” Lai Mohammed, spokesman for the APC, said.<br />
<br />
“There had always been this fear that he might not want to concede, but he will remain a hero for this move. The tension will go down dramatically,<br />
<br />
“Anyone who tries to foment trouble on the account that they have lost the election will be doing so purely on his own,” he added.<br />
<br />
Victory for Buhari marks the first time in Nigeria’s history that an opposition party has democratically taken control of the country from the ruling party.<br />
<br />
A while ago, President Goodluck Jonathan called his major challenger and the likely-winner of the 2015 presidential election, Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress, APC to congratulate him.<br />
<br />
Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka said the president spoke with Muhammadu Buhari on the phone and will address the country after rounding off his meeting with his cabinet.<br />

President Jonathan also spoke with the National Leader of APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.<br />

<b>President Goodluck Jonathan has congratulated the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on his victory in the Saturday’s presidential election.</b><br />
<br />
A top government official told our correspondent that Jonathan had called Buhari on the telephone to congratulate him.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, Jonathan is currently meeting with the leadership of the National Peace Committee for the 2015 general elections, led by a former military leader, Gen. Abdusalami Abdusalami (retd.).<br />
<br />
Others at the meeting included the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Most Rev. Nicholas Okoh; Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onayeikan; and a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mrs. Priscilla Kuye.</div>

<b>The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2015 election, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has expressed gratitude to Nigerians for voting him and his party to steer the ship of state for the next four years.</b><br />
<br />
Buhari said this in an interim message of thanks and gratitude to Nigerians in Abuja on Tuesday.<br />
<br />
This was contained in a statement by the Director of Media and Publicity of the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation, Malam Garba Shehu.<br />
<br />
In the message, Buhari thanked Nigerians “for choosing him and his party over and above the PDP and their candidate, the incumbent President, Dr Jonathan Goodluck.”<br />
<br />
The APC statement said it “Declared victory after Dr. Jonathan called General Buhari at 5.15pm to make a concession and congratulate the winner.<br />
<br />
Shehu quoted Buhari as saying the mood of the country as well as its current state, did not warrant the type of wild celebrations reportedly going on in some cities across the country.<br />
<br />
“Buhari said anybody happy with the victory of the APC in the presidential election will not be involved in the molestation of opponents or the destruction of their property.<br />
<br />
“He or she is not with me, whoever does that,” Buhari curtly said.<br />
<br />
He is expected to make a major acceptance speech as soon as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission declares the final results in which Buhari is expected to be declared winner.<br />

<b>The All Progressives Congress has lost five House of Representatives seats to the Peoples Democratic Party and a seat to the Accord Party in Lagos.</b><br />
<br />
Investigations by our correspondent showed that most of the reps lost in Igbo- dominated local government areas.<br />
<br />
Sources in the APC said the love the people of the South-East have for President Goodluck Jonathan positively affected the PDP candidates, some of whom had not even been rigorously campaigning.<br />
<br />
In Amuwo Odofin local government, which has a very high Igbo population, especially in areas like Kirikiri, Satellite Town and FESTAC, the PDP candidate, Oghene Egboh, who is from the Niger-Delta, defeated Mr. Ganiyu Olukolu of the APC.<br />
<br />
In Ajeromi/Ifelodun, which is one of the most densely populated areas in Lagos State and is home to Ajegunle (another Igbo dominated area), the PDP candidate, Mrs. Rita Orji, who also hails from the South-East, defeated Taiwo Adenekan of the APC.<br />
<br />
The story was the same in the Igbo-dominated Ojo LG, where the PDP candidate, Mr. Tajudeen Obasa, won the seat.<br />
<br />
In Surulere federal constituency 2, which is home to Aguda and a few Igbo settlements, Mr. Tunji Soyinka of the PDP defeated Mr. Hakeem Bamgbala of the APC.<br />
<br />
It was learnt that apart from the ‘Igbo’ factor, the incumbent rep, Mr. Aliyu Kazeem, had been in court with Bamgbala over the conduct of the primary.<br />
<br />
It was learnt that the division within the party gave the PDP the opportunity to penetrate the community.<br />
<br />
An APC leader in Surulere said, “We are still in shock. Haliyu Kazeem, who is the incumbent, lost the primary in December last year and refused to work with Bamgbala. He took Bamgbala to court and they are still slugging it out.<br />
<br />
“If they had put things in order, we would not have lost. Bamgbala is a former chairman of Aguda Local Council Development Area and a good grass roots politician.”<br />
<br />
In Mushin federal constituency 2, the APC candidate, Yemi Alli, lost to Dauda Kako-Aare of the Accord Party.<br />
<br />
Kako-Aare, who is the incumbent, lost at the APC primary last December to Alli and defected to Accord.<br />
<br />
In Oshodi/Isolo federal constituency 2, the incumbent, Mr. Akeem Munir, lost to Mr. Tony Nwoolu of the PDP.</div>

<b>Bauchi State Governor Isa Yuguda has lost his bid to represent Bauchi South Senatorial zone in the last Saturday's  Senate election.He was floored  in a landslide defeat  by Mr. Ali Wakili, a retired Comptroller of Customs.</b><br />
<br />
The Bauchi South Senatorial zone is made up Alkaleri, Bauchi, Bogoro, Dass, Kirfi, Tafawa Balewa and Toro Local Government areas.<br />
<br />
Yuguda contested on the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP]  platform and Mr. Ali Wakili contested on All Progressive Congress (APC).<br />
<br />
Announcing  the results at Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC], the Collating Officer and Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, Dr Shuibu Musa, declared that the APC candidate Ali Wakili polled <b>341,708</b> votes to floor incumbent PDP candidate Governor Yuguda with <b>115,575 </b>votes.<br />
<br />
Yuguda lost to Wakili in all the  seven local governments in  the Bauchi South Senatorial zone.<br />
<br />
A breakdown of the results showed  that Wakili scored 134,528 votes in Bauchi Local Government Area where Yuguda hails from, by a wide margin.  Yuguda struggled to get 23,945 in Bauchi.<br />
<br />
In Dass Local Government Area, Yuguda scored 11,923 and Wakili won 17,009 to win in the smallest local government council in Nigeria.<br />
<br />
Yuguda  also lost in Toro Local Government Area by  30,401 votes to Wakili’s 73,033 votes.<br />
<br />
In Tafawa Balewa, the most embattled local government council in the state where Wakili comes from, Yuguda coasted home with  23,519 votes as against 40,147 votes scored by the former Customs chieftain.<br />
<br />
Total votes bagged  by Wakili in other four local government governments are 264,777 and  Yuguda 89,788.</div>
