On Wednesday morning, Judge Carmen Mullins vacated the decision against George Stinney Jr., a black teen who was convicted of beating two young white girls to death in the small town of Alcolu in 1944.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Civil rights advocates have spent years trying to get the case reopened, arguing that Stinney's confession was coerced. At the time of his arrest, Stinney weighed just 95 pounds. Officials said Stinney had admitted beating the girls, 11 and 8 years old, with a railroad spike.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
In a 2009 affidavit, Stinney's sister said she had been with him on the day of the murders and he could not have committed them.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Stinney was put on trial and then executed within three months of the killings. His trial lasted three hours, and a jury of 12 white men took 10 minutes to find him guilty.</div>

He is often cited as the youngest person executed in the U.S. in the 20th century. At the time of the crime, 14 was the legal age of criminal responsibility in the state.</div>

While presenting Mr. Osibajo to the media at the national secretariat of the APC in Abuja, Mr. Buhari said his running mate was chosen because of his impeccable integrity and excellent background.</div>

“He is an excellent professional, a man of faith, a devoted family man and a role model to our fellow countrymen and women,” he said.</div>

He also said Mr. Osibajo is a professor of law and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, adding also that he is an alumnus of the University of Lagos and the London School of Economics, a prodigious author who has to his credit several books on civil procedure in Nigerian superior courts.</div>

“The vice-presidential candidate is a friend of the less-privileged, compassionate and zealous in service, a man of uncommon humility, a loyal, dependable and selfless patriot,” he said.</div>

Mr. Buhari also stated that with his choice of deputy, the real task rescuing Nigeria and changing the country for good has just begun.</div>

<b>A 27-year-old woman, Lucy Gbagyo, has died after jumping from a speeding commercial bus in the Shogunle area of Lagos State.</b></div>

<i>PUNCH Metro</i> learnt that the Benue State indigene was on her way to see her fiance, Philip Nguhwa, on Sunday evening for preparations for their wedding when the incident happened.</div>

Our correspondent gathered that Gbagyo and Nguhwa were to have their wedding on February 27, 2015, having courted for four years.</div>

It was learnt that on the fateful day, the deceased had boarded a vehicle from the Toll Gate end of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway en route to Ilori Street in the Shogunle area where Nguhwa lives.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The bus driver was said to have sped past her destination and she began to shout for him to stop.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The driver allegedly ignored her and continued with the journey.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
When her cries fell on deaf ears, she reportedly forced the door open and jumped out.</div>

Her fiance, Nguhwa, a trader, said the driver immediately stopped the vehicle as other passengers and sympathisers in the area rushed to save the victim.</div>

He said, “One of them picked her phone and checked the last dialled number. He saw my number and called me. He said I should rush down to the bus stop.</div>

“When I got there, I called her name and she opened her eyes faintly and shut them again. We all carried her into the bus and rushed her to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.</div>

“We had not gone too far when she died in the vehicle. When we got to the hospital, she was confirmed dead on arrival.”</div>

<i>PUNCH Metro</i> learnt that the victim, who was into the business of buying clothes in Lagos and selling them in Benue, had lost her father in a motor accident in January.</div>

A leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, has said that he turned down an invitation to be the party’s vice presidential candidate in order to maintain his position as the leader of the party.</div>

In a statement Wednesday, Mr. Tinubu said that as a leader, he would be able to act as a bridge builder across all divides as well as further the party’s interests and campaign ahead of next year’s elections.</div>

“I helped to build this party, giving no thought to seeking an elected office because of it,” said Mr. Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State.</div>

Mr. Osinbajo, 55, a professor of law and pastor at The Redeemed Christian Church of God, is a loyalist to Mr. Tinubu.</div>

A military court in Nigeria has sentenced 54 soldiers to death after they were found guilty of mutiny.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The soldiers were convicted Wednesday in Abuja on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy to commit mutiny and mutiny.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Four other soldiers were acquitted.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The convicted soldiers, mostly officers involved in the fight against the Boko Haram terrorists in Northeast Nigeria, are to die on stakes, by firing squad, after a military court sitting in Abuja found them guilty of “mutiny” Wednesday night.</div>

The soldiers, attached to the 7 Division, Nigerian Army in Maiduguri include two Corporals, Cpl, nine Lance Corporals, LCpl and 49 Private soldiers.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The charge sheet said the soldiers conspired to commit mutiny against the authorities of the 7 Division on August 4, at the Mulai Primary School camp, opposite AIT Maiduguri, Borno State.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The soldiers are the second batch of Nigerian soldiers condemned to death by Nigerian Military courts for mutiny.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The trial of the soldiers began on October 15 on allegations they disobeyed orders to join operations against the extremist group, Boko Haram.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
All the accused soldiers pleaded not guilty to the charges.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The prosecutor, J.E. Nwosu, an army Captain, alleged that the accused soldiers had on August 4, in Maiduguri, refused to join the 111 Special Forces Battalion troops, commanded by Timothy Opurum, a Lieutenant Colonel for an operation.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mr. Nwosu said the operation was meant to recapture Delwa, Bulabulin and Damboa in Borno State from the Boko Haram terrorists.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

According to him, the offence is punishable under Section 52(1) (a) of the Armed Forces Act Cap A20 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

The prosecution called the commander of the 111 Special Forces, Lt.-Col. Opurum, as one of the witnesses.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The statement of the commander was admitted by the court and marked Exhibit P1.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mr. Opurum, in his testimony in October, said the Special Forces were tasked with advancing to recapture Delwa to clear the way for other battalions to pass through to recapture Babulin and Damboa from the insurgents.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
He said he took off for the operation with only four officers and 29 soldiers as “tasked” after majority of the 174 soldiers in the unit refused to join the operation.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

The witness said after he took charge of the Special Forces, he addressed and assured them that they could achieve the task given to them.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He, however, said the soldiers were “hesitant to partake in the operation” in spite of the assurances.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Under cross examination by Femi Falana, who represented the accused soldiers, Mr. Opurum said 47 of the soldiers who initially refused, later re-joined the forces for another operation.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mr. Opurum said the 47 soldiers joined, after he called for reinforcement, as they came under attack from terrorists, who out-numbered them and had superior weapons.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Asked if the soldiers refused to fight or refused to join the operation because of lack of superior weapons, he said all units in the North-East had requested for weapons.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On the disciplinary measure taken against the 47 soldiers, who initially refused, he said the process for that was to begin when they were court-martialled.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mr. Falana in an oral application asked to the court for the record of weapons recovered from the 47 soldiers, when they initially refused to join the operations.</div>

The President of the Court, Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Yusuf, said the application had been noted “for action".</div>

He was appointed Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in 1999 and reappointed for a second term in 2003. During the period of his public service, he commenced the Lagos State justice reform project. A prominent feature of that project was the establishment of the Directorate for Citizens’ Rights (DCR) which provides free legal services and legal representation to indigent citizens of the state. This initiative gave a voice to many who would otherwise not have a way to access their rights. </div>

Prior to that appointment, Osibajo, a Professor of Law, was the Head of Public Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos. Between 1988 and 1992, he was the Special Adviser to the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. </div>

After a 29-year-old Chinese woman named Ting Su allegedly discovered that her husband was cheating on her with her twin sister, she tracked down the duo at a local shopping center after using one or both of their phones to pinpoint their whereabouts.</div>

Once she arrived, she found the duo naked inside a parked car, which is not typically a situation you can explain your way out of.</div>

<b>For daring to tell Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi the truth about his ambition to be All Progressives Congress running mate several months back, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has come under sponsored insidious media attacks and a gang up led by Rotimi and some governors within the party.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The architect of this gang up against Tinubu is Governor Amaechi, whose pleas for Tinubu’s backing did not succeed. In no uncertain terms, Tinubu had told Rotimi, who had bragged he had enough money to shoulder the financial responsibility for the APC presidential candidate in the general elections, that he would not receive his support.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Reasons include that on a national level Rotimi’s name recognition and acceptance was below that of another South-South governor. He was also at a disadvantage in terms of electoral appeal to voters. Also his region already has the chairmanship of the party. Moreover, the South West was set to fill the slot of the Vice President after conceding the presidency to the North.</div>

Tinubu, a close source said advised Amaechi to tarry awhile and look for other options. From this point, Amaechi began to regard Tinubu as one of the people plotting against his political ascendency.</div>

With a private jet and loads of cash, Amaechi moved quickly first to get John Oyegun on his side and later assembled a few governors to demand at every meeting that the slot of the Vice President be given to one of the governors. Senator Saraki is one of Amaechi’s chair leaders.</div>

The gang up against Tinubu, Chief Bisi Akande and by some extension General Buhari became so powerful that it manifested itself at one of the meetings where one of the governors openly threatened that the governors will withhold financial support for the party unless their interest was accommodated. Oyegun the party chairman was rattled until Tinubu called their bluff and challenged the governors to provide evidence of how much they have invested in the party.</div>

Two other members spoke against the governors and said to tie their funding of the party to securing favors is not the way to build a party.</div>

According to investigations, since the April national convention fall out, the governors had formed a block to checkmate Tinubu, Bisi Akande and General Buhari. Gov. Rochas Okorocha soon became a diehard critic of Tinubu and joined Amaechi in using the block to confront the former Lagos governor. The gang up failed. Tinubu prevailed.</div>

And Governor Amaechi never gave up on his ambition. While working to sideline Tinubu, he found a way to ingratiate himself to Buhari whom he promised to fund his presidential campaign if he picks him as his running mate. He eventually got Buhari pick him as the Director General of the Buhari Campaign Organization for the primaries. Driven by ambition, an unrelenting Rotimi has continued to deploy money, propaganda and serial internal revolts against Tinubu.</div>

Tinubu, a close aide said, has watched with amusement, insisting that the platform must be secured and the party will be properly guided. The senior aide to Tinubu also confided that his camp is shocked by how desperate Governor Amaechi has become and how he has singled out Tinubu has a target. Governor Okorocha and others conspired against Lagos hosting the presidential primaries because of the fear of Tinubu.</div>

Shortly after the convention for the presidential primary, Rotimi swung into further action, sensing that the South West will get the running mate slot and Tinubu might be on the ticket with Buhari. The several salacious stories about Tinubu in the legacy and social media point in the direction of the Rotimi camp, though this us yet to be verified.</div>

What is playing out now is not just a revolt against Tinubu but one against the South West. The serial gang up began when they moved against Bisi Akande as chairman of APC. Then, the takeover of the planning of the national convention in Abuja. Then, the gang up against Lagos as a venue for the presidential primary and now the plot to take the vice presidential position away from the South West.</div>

The APC today stands both at the cusp of victory and at the precipice of failure. The overriding ambition of the governors and itsintensity is nothing to compared to Tinubu’s ambition which in any case he has every legitimate right to.</div>

<b>Edet Okon has been arrested by men of the Cross Rivers state Police command for being in possession of hard drugs contained in well over 104 bags, and 100, 200 litre drums.</b></div>

According to the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Hogan Bassey, Mr Edet was arrested with the hard drugs at his home in Ikot-Nkese in the Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State following a tipoff on Wednesday December 10th.</div>

"We acted based on information. The 104 bags and two drums (100 and 200 litre drums) were stocked in his house when we got there around 5:00am. He was arrested immediately and brought to the Command Headquarters."</div>
