<b>ABUJA, NIGERIA - In his bid to cut cost  of government,  President Mohammadu Buhari has announced that there would be no federal government delegation for this year's hajj in Saudi Arabia.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
He however stated that the government shall play its traditional roles of providing consular, medical and security services to Nigerian pilgrims.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With the decision, the government is expected to save about $1 million and ₦30m in local expenses.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu who stated this on Monday quoted the president as saying that the decision was not targeted at any individual or group.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
He also stated that States were at liberty to sponsor their pilgrims,  if they so desired.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
"The States can deal with that (meaning appointment of own delegations) but this year at the Center, we will not be involved", Shehu said.</div>

<b>SHIMAWA, NIGERIA - Apparently referring to his spiritual endowment, the general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has said that he is richer than one of the world’s richest men, Bill Gates.</b></div>

Teaching the worshippers in the mission during the church's 63rd Annual Convention on Saturday shortly before the Holy Communion Service on the topic: <i>Overflowing Cup</i>, Pastor Adeboye said that if Bill Gates needs shoes, he would have to go to the market to buy them, but that if he should announce that he needs shoes at the Redemption Camp, where the convention took place, the auditorium might not contain the shoes people would donate to him.</div>

"I have houses in at least 188 countries of the world, where we have our churches, so I am richer than Bill Gates. Each time I visit these countries, my children would be struggling and saying 'daddy, come and stay with me.'</div>

"If I announce here that tomorrow morning, I need a car to travel to the new auditorium, how many cars do you think would be made available to me by you my children? Those of you that do not have a car of your own, very soon, God will give you your own cars. So, I am appealing to you to become an incurable soul winner before you leave this convention ground and your cup will overflow," he said.</div>

The man of God had earlier used the occasion to warn that any of the mission's provinces with the dirtiest hostels at the camp would not be allowed to attend next year’s convention, and advised that people should tidy up their dormitories.</div>

The Friday, August 7 Convention/Holy Ghost Service, which attracted millions of people from all over the country, and which caused heavy traffic gridlock along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, witnessed salvation, testimonies, prayers, songs and healing, where the lame walked and the sick got healed.</div>

There were also many powerful testimonies during the Friday Holy Ghost service, with a woman testifying of how she was healed of cancer, while another woman, who was barren for 20 years, said God eventually gave her a set of twins through the ministry of Pastor Adeboye.</div>

Another lady, who was possessed by a marine spirit, also gave a testimony of how God delivered her and she vomited two keys, which she showed to the congregation as proof.</div>

Also testifying, Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom, said that he dropped out of school in 1979 and became a motor park tout, but that he is now a holder of a doctorate degree and a worker in RCCG.</div>

He said: "Pastor Enoch Adeboye prayed for me concerning my ambition to become governor and it came to pass after many years of my attempt to hold a public office".</div>

In his sermon, Pastor Adeboye assured the congregation that God is sufficient in all ways, adding that God can reverse all the irreversible and solve all their problems if they obey Him.</div>

Welcoming the vice president, Professor Osinbajo to the convention on Saturday, Pastor Adeboye stated that he is not just a pastor in the mission, but that the VP is also one of the mission’s ushers, who minister during special occasions.</div>

"I don't know why he was not allowed to officiate during the convention. I hope he would do so during the congress in December. I want you to send our regards to President Muhammadu Buhari and we want him to join us next time," he added.</div>

Daddy Adeboye, as he is fondly called, used the opportunity to urge the worshippers to always pray for the Nigerian Army so that they could help defeat all the enemies of the country.</div>

<b>MUZARABANI, ZIMBABWE - Five members of the same family were charged with the murder of a prophet who had been called to their their home in the village of Mazonde, Zimbabwe to help them cleanse their house of evil spirits.</b></div>

According to local newspaper, <b>Zed 24 News</b>, the accused family identified as Leanmore Mutero, Tonderai Muswere, Michael Muchengeti, Manasa Mutero and Nicholas Mutero, appeared at the High Court in Harare facing a murder charge for participating in the death of self-professed Prophet Shamiso Kanyama, who accidentally died during a healing ceremony.</div>

Pastor Kanyama had reportedly asked his followers to bury him alive so that he could summon more cleansing powers to heal the family that had been plagued by mysterious deaths.</div>

<i>Zed 24 News </i>reports that High Court Justice Owen Tagu heard how on that day, the late pastor had been invited to attend the home in the Muzarabani district, which is situated along the Mozambique-Zimbabwe border, by their priest, Zvidzai Muchengeti.</div>

The five men had requested the priest to help them clean their home of evil spirits, because it was causing mysterious deaths in their family.</div>

Responding to their request to perform a healing ceremony, Kanyama had ordered his followers to dig a grave and bury him alive because that was the way he summoned more healing powers to ward off evil spirits. However, the plan backfired on the prophet when instead of being resurrected as he supposed, the men dug up the grave again to find him dead.</div>

Kanyama helped to dig his own grave before praying and jumping inside, Father Zvidzai, who has turned State witness, told the High Court. He continued that after laying face down in the grave, he ordered his followers to start covering him with soil.</div>

Ironically, the single mom says that it was a blessing to find Mount Moriah, as she's been in search of a church home since she moved to the area six months ago. However, this all changed when she received a letter stating that she was behind on payments.</div>

"To be a member in good standing and have the right to vote, adults are to contribute the minimum amount of $50 per month,” read Peterson.</div>

"Fifty dollars per month, now this shocked me because I haven't heard about the $50 per month. So where did this come from?" asked Peterson. "Then Mount Moriah day is on there, $150."</div>

The letter went on to explain that she would also be responsible for a yearly church anniversary fee of $250. In total, she was told that membership would require her to pay $1,000 in donations per year. She adds that she was told one of the fees was to help pay off debt owed by the church.</div>

<b>ABUJA, NIGERIA - President Muhammadu Buhari has approved a special exchange rate for this year’s Christian pilgrimage to Israel.</b></div>

The Executive Secretary, the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission, Mr. John Kennedy-Opara, disclosed this to State House correspondents shortly after briefing the President of the commission’s activities inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja.</div>

Kennedy-Opara said Buhari has approved the rate of ₦160 to $1 for those who will take part in the exercise.</div>

He said, “The President has approved $1 to ₦160 for the conventional exchange rate for this pilgrimage operation and he also agreed that he will continue to encourage us particularly as we drive to ensure self-sustenance, to make sure that the pilgrims are able to pay for the pilgrimages after removing government sponsorship.</div>

“This is a journey and we are sure that we are going to succeed. So the President was very happy with the entire process.</div>

He said those going to Israel for the 11 days trip will pay ₦379,840, while the youth pilgrimage will cost ₦357,000.</div>

“The beauty of what we are doing is that we have added skill acquisition. In other words, people who go on pilgrimage can undergo the skill acquisition programme organised by the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission and Ministry of Agriculture, Israel to train our people in the area of agriculture.</div>

“We are also introducing the pilgrimage pilot lottery scheme that will enable people who are lucky to be able to go on this trip without much dependence on the state and the Federal Government,” he added.</div>

Josiah Atkins Idowu-Fearon, the time of glory has come having just been appointed Secretary General of the Anglican Communion Worldwide, with headquarters at Lambeth, United Kingdom.</b></div>

The position makes him the second in command after the Archbishop of Canterbury. Breaking a record as the first African to hold the position, Idowu-Fearon has had a number of other high profile albeit controversial achievements in his over half a century of dedicated service to the development of the Anglican Church not only in Nigeria but also across the world. He is expected to serve for an initial renewable period of seven years.</div>

When at the height of the Kaduna religious riots of 2000, Idowu-Fearon, against all odds, established a centre for the study of Islam in his Kaduna Diocese, a cross section of his flock virtually demanded for his head, calling him all manner of names including that of a Muslim Bishop, infiltrating the Church of Christ.</div>

That name tag has tended to accompany the Bishop over these years for a man who actually speaks Arabic apart from holding a Master’s Degree in Islamic Theology.</div>

The valedictory lecture and send-forth ceremony for Idowu-Fearon and his wife, Amina, which held Saturday at the Jakaranda Farms, on the outskirts of Kaduna metropolis, attracted a number of dignitaries from within and outside Nigeria, Muslims and Christians alike.</div>

Born on January 17, 1949 at Gerinye in Kogi state, Idowu-Fearon said he formally embraced the Christian religion in 1964. Originally enrolled in military school to train as a soldier, the passion to be a priest apparently overwhelmed all other aspirations and as Idowu-Fearon explained during his valedictory speech.</div>

“In my fourth year, it had become very clear that the Lord was calling me to be a soldier in His Army, to the extent that in spite of a direct entry to the Nigerian Defence Academy, I was given a sympathetic discharge by the late Gen. Hassan Katsina, in Lagos.” The development, according to him, “turned out to be the channel through which the Lord saved me.”</div>

Several years later and in the course of his pastoral training across many institutions, Idowu-Fearon said he developed a special interest for Islam, more so, at a time in Nigeria when the religious harmony that hitherto existed between Christian and Muslim communities went sour.</div>

At the Immanuel College, Ibadan, Idowu-Fearon said he met a certain Dr. Stadey who introduced him to what he described as the world of Islam, and, as he put it, “my interest was aroused, I pleaded with the Lord for a scholarship to do some further studies in Islam and I felt the need to carefully study how the Koran presents the nature of Jesus Christ.” The quest later led to Idowu-Fearon’s Master’s Degree programme in, Islam and Muslim-Christian Relations, at Birmingham University.</div>

From then on, he delved further into Islam and also studied the Arabic language in the process, at the University of Jordan, Amman, and, eventually turning the Bishop into a visiting Islamic lecturer and Faculty member at both the Wycliffe College, University of Toronto, Canada, and at the Canterbury International Centre, United Kingdom.</div>

Back home in Nigeria and applying his various trainings to his primary assignment as Bishop in Kaduna and Sokoto, Idowu-Fearon ran into muddy waters as a number of his flock apparently could not explain how and why a Bishop can be “so close to Islam and Muslims.” This is aside the fact that the Nigerian Anglican community also has its fair share of divisions pertaining to certain ideologies in the Christian religion and Anglicanism in particular.</div>

Perhaps,   Voltaire’s philosophy may apply to Idowu-Fearon as it is dangerous to be right in matters on which the established authorities are wrong. As a Theology student and researcher, Idowu-Fearon is quite familiar with the concepts of     Monophyisitism and Nestorianism, a twin Christology position that insists that Christ has only one nature as opposed to the traditional belief that Christ has two natures, one divine and the other human.</div>

Moreover, as a self-confessed disciple of Richard Hooker who is believed to have laid the theological foundation for understanding of the church for Anglicans, Idowu-Fearon says he shares the concepts of the mystical church which is invisible and the visible church. For him, membership of the visible church is determined, among other things, the profession of the Lord Jesus Christ while only God knows those who belong or may eventually be part of the mystical church.</div>

Whatever the arguments, for Idowu-Fearon, “in order to create and promote a culture of respect for differences within our Communion, I encourage our bishops in this part of the Communion to cultivate the habit of understanding other positions other than their own. Our bishops in Nigeria within their diocese should promote robust debates between the lay and ordained members and such will get the bishop well-informed.”</div>

After his consecration in 1990 and given what he describes as his exposure and experiences which were compounded by his “undue” knowledge of Islam, Idowu-Fearon said his colleagues, fellow bishops, did everything possible to frustrate him in the course of his service. According to him, “my being elected as Bishop of Sokoto was seen by some in the then House of Bishops   as a way of humbling me but God used our time in Sokoto to expose us to the international community.</div>

And, when Kaduna Diocese was going to be vacant, efforts were made to send me to be bishop in Cyprus and the Gulf; this was to get me out of the country. The form was filled and my signature forged without my knowledge. In Cyprus for an interfaith meeting, the Lord revealed it to me through Australian missionaries who volunteered to host me for the conference and the plot was confirmed by the then Secretary General of the Anglican Communion.</div>

After my first five years as the first ecclesiastical Archbishop of Kaduna province, again, the powers that be felt that I was too close to the then Archbishop of Canterbury and the Communion at large, that I was promoting Western relativism and that I was going to sell the province of Nigeria to the West. Two bishops were specially commissioned to sell me as a convert to Islam and that Fearon is a Muslim, drinking tea with the Sultan and that Fearon was promoting homosexuality in Nigeria.”</div>

<b>The Road to Lambeth</b></div>

Idowu-Fearon’s journey to Lambeth as Secretary General at the Canterbury did not come on a platter of gold. Although he applied for the position, along with 31 others from various countries, Idowu-Fearon believes that God made it possible for him to use his undergraduate and graduate studies in the United Kingdom to make contacts that ultimately laid the foundation for his nomination after beating three other candidates who made the shortlist.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to him, in the years after 1990, opportunities started to open up for him in Britain and the United States of America during which he served on various commissions within the Anglican Communion. Idowu-Fearon was a founding member of the Canterbury’s Compass Rose Council, a foundation member and one of the first three presidents of the Network for Interfaith Concerns.</div>

He was also member of the 13-man committee of the Archbishop of Canterbury that looked into the responses to Lambeth Resolution 1; 10 of 1998 as well as member of the committee that produced the Windsor Commission Report of 2003. According to Idowu-Fearon, “as I was thinking and praying about taking an early retirement in order to spend the rest of my active life to build an army of well-informed and articulate Christian leaders to constructively engage their Muslim neighbours and build a culture of respect and peaceful co-existence, the Lord opened a new world of service to me.”</div>

Yes, I have some distant members of the family who are Muslims and as a young man, some people tried to initiate me into certain things, some of them fetish, without the knowledge of my mother but I came to Christ at the Nigerian Military School, Zaria in my second year in 1964 and since then, I decided to rely on Jesus Christ alone and no other.</div>

I once saw you clutching Dan Bown's <i>Davinci Code</i>. Some people believe that the book is a direct attack on the Church of Christ. Do you hold that view too?</div>

The book is an attack on the church because Davinci is totally against the fact that Jesus Christ lived and died as we read it in the Bible. That book must have been inspired by the Devil and it is coming direct from the pit of Hell, against the Gospel. And, that is why I consider this fighting within the church as a waste of time.</div>

Instead, we should come together and be aware of the fact that secularism has become a religion and it is very strong and some of the promoters control most of the media. Christians ought to come together, forget whether we are Roman Catholic, Pentecostal and all others who worship God, the Christian way and join hands with the Muslims who are also fighting secularism. That is my mission.</div>

Do you not think that some of the issues you raised in your valedictory speech may actually be responsible for certain disagreements you have with some of your colleagues. Issues as, the visible and invisible church and the concepts of Monophysitism and similar high-sounding words which may not make meanings to an ordinary member of the church?</div>

You see, in the Anglican understanding and Roman Catholics also have similar understanding too and that is why the Roman Catholic is one church. But the Anglican Church is a group of churches, 38 different churches coming together and that is why it is a communion. We don’t have a centralized government or authority like the Pope, for the Catholic Church.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
That is the problem the Anglican Church is facing. When we talk about the invisible church, it means Heaven and only God decides who goes there and you do not need to discipline anybody. From the Bible, we believe that whoever believes in Jesus Christ and takes him as the Lord and Saviour and you are baptised, that person is a Christian and belongs to the visible church.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
In this visible church, you also have liars, thieves, you have adulterers, cheats and you cannot disown them and say that they are not members of the church because all they need is a confession to believing in Jesus Christ as Saviour. The Bishops and other priests are there to guide the visible church and teach them what the Bible says.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
But irrespective of going against certain injunctions, you do not have the right to say that they are not members of the visible church. If for example somebody is a serial adulterer, you can suspend him from the church for a while, to correct him or her. In the invisible church, you do not need bishops or priests because God alone decides who become members. But we need the visible church to remind us of the invisible church because in the final analysis, everybody wants to be in the invisible church.</div>

On the issue of Monophysitism, I did not want to go further because if I did, some people would throw stones at me but there are some Christians who still believe in Monophysitism. Members of the Coptic Church are Monophysites, they believe in one nature of Christ. But the orthodox position is two natures of Christ, the human and divine, not conjoined. In other words, Jesus is 100 per cent divine and 100 per cent human but only God knows how it is like that. Anglicans, Catholics, Presbyterians, we believe in the two natures of Christ.</div>

Is the controversial Centre for Islamic Studies which you established in the Diocese likely to survive your exit?</div>

Yes. In fact, I signed a contract this morning (Monday), recruiting two Muslims and two Christians who have Masters Degrees in Islamic Studies, to teach at the centre and I will be paying them from my pocket. They will continue to run the certificate and diploma programmes there. So, the centre will continue and we are going to use the lower part of the new house being built and I am putting up a full library there and the chapel will serve as classrooms until I retire.</div>

<b>NEW YORK, USA - When Faatimah Knight reached out to her Muslim friends and acquaintances to try and help black churches that had been destroyed by fire, she had no idea how much they could raise.</b></div>

Today, they have managed to raise just under $30,000 - money that will be used to help up to seven churches that were destroyed in the American south in the aftermath of the Charleston shooting and the campaign against the Confederate flag.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
"We have been overwhelmed by how generous people have been," Ms Knight, 23, told <i><b><a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/american-muslims-raise-30000-to-help-repair-black-churches-destroyed-by-fire-10375704.html">The Independent</a>. </b></i>"We will stop it today...We will figure out how to distribute the money."</div>

Ms Knight's campaign – carried out as Muslims around the world marked the festival of Ramadan - followed a smaller, more modest enterprise she had set in action in the days after the shooting dead of nine people at Charleston's Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church on June 17. She and some friends wanted to raise $500 to send flowers; they ended up raising $900.</div>

And when she and the same friends read about the series of churches that were burned down and the probe by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, they similarly wanted to act.</div>

A number of Muslim organisations have responded to her call Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative, the Arab American Association of New York and Ummah Wide - but she said people of other faiths had also donated.</div>

"It's Ramadan and we are experiencing firsthand the beauty and sanctity of our mosques during this holy month," says a message posted on the launchgood.com website.</div>

"All houses of worship are sanctuaries, a place where all should feel safe, a place we can seek refuge when the world is too much to bear."</div>

Ms Knight, a Masters student at the Chicago Theological Seminary, said of her acquaintances some people had questioned the campaign and asked why she was raising money for Christian houses of worship, as opposed to a Muslim cause. But most were supportive.</div>

She Islam taught of the need to protect the weak and vulnerable. She said while the black Christian communities of the South might not be weak, they were vulnerable.</div>

"I'm a black person and I do identify with the wider black community at that level," she said. "Historically, the black community has been vulnerable."</div>

Oklahoma's highest court said the Ten Commandments chiseled into the 6-foot-tall granite monument, which was privately funded by a Republican legislator, are "obviously religious in nature and are an integral part of the Jewish and Christian faiths."</div>

The 7-2 ruling overturns a decision by a district court judge who determined the monument could stay.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Attorney General Scott Pruitt had argued that the monument was historical in nature and nearly identical to a Texas monument that was found constitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court. The Oklahoma justices said the local monument violated the state's constitution, not the U.S. Constitution.</div>

"Quite simply, the Oklahoma Supreme Court got it wrong," Pruitt said in a statement. "The court completely ignored the profound historical impact of the Ten Commandments on the foundation of Western law."</div>

Pruitt said his office would ask the court for a rehearing and request that the monument be allowed to stay until the court considers his request.</div>

Since the original monument was erected in 2012, several other groups have asked to put up their own monuments on the Capitol grounds. Among them is a group that wants to erect a 7-foot-tall statue that depicts Satan as Baphomet, a goat-headed figure with horns, wings and a long beard.</div>
