<b>MAIDUGURI, NIGERIA - The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai ,almost ran into a Boko Haram ambush yesterday on the Maiduguri-Dikwa road,Borno State.</b></div>

But his advance team did and lost one soldier, <b><a href="http://thenationonlineng.net/chief-of-army-staff-escapes-boko-haram-ambush/">The Nation</a></b> reports.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Five of the terrorists were killed by the advance team in the gun fire exchange.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The soldiers  were on their  way to Dikwa ahead of Gen.Buratai who is currently visiting troops in towns and villages recently liberated from terrorists in the state.</div>

Four terrorists surrendered.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Also during the trip,the Chief of Army arrested four other suspected Boko Haram members after picking them from the midst of herdsmen.</div>

As Buratai’s  convoy was made its way to Dikwa, eagle eyed soldiers grew suspicious of  some men among the herdsmen and their cattle.</div>

The COAS ordered the convoy to stop and got four men and an elderly Fulani man arrested.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Fulani man confessed during interrogation that he met the suspects   just before their arrest and had actually forced themselves on his party.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The four  confessed that they were indeed  members of the terror sect.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
They were there and then whisked off to Maiduguri.</div>

The Army Chief visited Dikwa,  Mafa and Gamboru-Ngala.</div>

At Mafa, General Buratai commended soldiers of  the 7 Division of the army for a job well done.</div>

He  assured them of  improved welfare and allowances.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
He however told the  soldiers that  “there is still more job to be done and we have to do this once and for all so that all of us can go back to our respective barracks and continue with our normal jobs as soldiers”.</div>

In Dikwa  the COAS  was welcome with cheers by over 4000 internally displaced persons from Gamboru and neighbouring towns, who were full of praises and prayers for him and his soldiers.</div>

Buratai who addressed them  in Kanuri pledged that  that they would soon be resettled as his troops are working round the clock  to rid the area of terrorists.</div>

In Ngala town, the Army chief met jubilant troops   celebrating the liberation of the area.</div>

<b>MAIDUGURI, NIGERIA - Nigeria’s service chiefs appear to be taking the President’s matching orders to defeat Boko Haram within three months, with all the seriousness it requires.</b></div>

To this end, the Chief of Army Staff, Major-General Tukur Buratai and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Sadique Abubakar have arrived in Maiduguri for an assessment of the military operations against the insurgents.</div>

The Inspector-General of Police and the National Security Adviser are also in the entourage.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, after decorating the officers whose appointments were announced two months ago, lamented the upsurge in the wave of the terror attacks in the north east, challenging the service chiefs not to fail Nigerians.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
He charged them to be accountable for all men and equipment under their command, with the welfare of the troops uppermost in their minds.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The President also pledged to give them the needed support, while charging them to protect innocent civilians as well as respect the rights of combatants to earn the support of Nigerians and the international community.</div>

On assumption of office on May 29, the President had ordered that the military’s command centre be moved to the troubled north east to ensure more effective prosecution of the anti-terrorism campaign.</div>

Even if he resurfaces, Shekau is already a damaged leader for the group – credit for which should richly go to the outgone Jonathan administration.</div>

VP Biden assured of the goodwill of the United States in rebuilding the Nigerian economy, but observed that corruption and weak institutions must be tackled, if Nigeria was to benefit from reforms. He immediately went to Konduga, headquarters of Konduga Local Government Area, where he launched <b><i>Operation Zaman Lafiya Dole</i></b>, a new operational code for the counter-insurgency fight in the Northeast.</div>

Accompanied by Borno State Deputy Governor Zannah Umar Mustapha and other military top brass, the COAS appealed to the troops and other security agencies.</div>

He also called for collaboration from the general public to end the Boko Haram crisis, stressing that "without cooperation, determination and discipline among all and sundry, it would be difficult to defeat terrorists".</div>

<b>ABUJA, NIGERIA - The former National Security Adviser to the President, Colonel Sambo Dasuki (rtd), has condemned an insinuation that the Department of State Security (DSS) operatives invaded his residence last week because he was being investigated over an alleged involvement in Boko Haram attacks.</b></div>

An associate of the former NSA who visited <i>Daily Trust'</i>s<i> o</i>ffice to lodge a complaint over the report which appeared in <b><i>Daily Trust </i></b>yesterday stated that Col. Dasuki was worried about the insinuation when "all his life as NSA he was committed to the safety and security of lives of Nigerians, not just the people of the North East."</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The associate said the former NSA was very bitter about the report considering the fact the Col. Dasuki is a northerner, a Nigerian and a Muslim, hence it would be unthinkable that he would be involved in a scheme that led to death and misery in the North-East.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to the associate, "Col. Dasuki cannot comprehend the motive behind the allegation. We don’t play politics with the security of lives and property. The media should be wary of those who use its platform for mischief."</div>

He itemised some of the programmes that Col Dasuki spearheaded to ensure there is security in the country to include, the soft approach to counter-terrorism, where repentant terrorists and victims are rehabilitated. </div>

"He also ensured that the 22 Local Government Areas in the North-East which were under Boko Haram control were liberated completely; Sambisa forest, Gwoza, Baga and Bama were also freed; cattle rustlers were sent packing from the North-West; and some intelligence steps were taken through collaboration with neighbouring countries and other nationals in containing the excesses of the terrorists."</div>

The associate said the former NSA put in place a system that utilised "ways and means" to counter the insurgency.</div>

<b>ABUJA, NIGERIA - The resignation letter of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Colonel Sambo Dasuki, has been rejected by President Muhammadu Buhari, <i>gongnews</i> has reported. </b></div>

The report said Dasuki's resignation was rejected on the ground that he must account for funds received and spent under his tenure in the prosecution of the Boko Haram insurgency.</div>

President Buhari was reported to have said Dasuki's resignation is 'unacceptable' "following intelligence reports showing the fake military hardware, consumables and large cache of money unaccounted for due to improper filing of contract papers under the office of the NSA," the paper reported.</div>

Government sources also said that the unaccounted funds pose a "significant financial risk and demonstrates a lack of internal control over the NSA's office which diminished the roles and powers of the Ministry of Defence and more than $50 billion in which contract files were incomplete or could not be located at all which he has to account for before leaving government”.</div>

<b>Nigerian soldiers on Saturday continued their offensive on the Boko Haram insurgents in the Sambisa Forest, a major enclave of the group.</b></div>

In a statement on Sunday, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) stated that 10 camps belonging to the insurgents were overrun by soldiers while an 'unconfirmed' number of the insurgents were also killed.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
"The Dure camp which is one of the most prominent camps in the forest witnessed the fiercest battle as the Special Forces descended heavily on it before it finally fell", the DHQ spokesperson, Chris Olukolade, said.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mr. Olukolade said: "four of the camps were located in a place called Iza within the forest while three others were noted to be recently established by the terrorists before the assault began."</div>

He added that "one soldier died from one of the land mine(s) encountered in the operation while two others were also wounded."</div>

"The terrorists lost a number of vehicles mounted with Anti-Aircraft Guns as well as armoured vehicles. Some of the terrorists who escaped from the camps also died as they ran into troops ambush in some escape routes from the forest.</div>

"Meanwhile, some of the fleeing terrorists have also engaged in suicide missions at Bitta where they encountered the Nigerian troops and Kiskeru across the border in Niger Republic.</div>

"The Operation to clear the terrorists in Sambisa and other forests is continuing as troops in all fronts have been alerted to be on the look out for fleeing terrorists.
