However, if it was, I must state that I am taken aback by the unwarranted attacks against me as if we were still campaigning. It is unbecoming of someone of his stature and calibre.<br /> <br /> "For me, it is high time politicians and leaders rose above petty issues and raise the bar in constitutional democracy. We should not just be democrats in words but also in deeds. We should play politics without bitterness.<br /> <br /> "It is on record that no Nigerian politician has taken former President Olusegun Obasanjo to the cleaners even as a sitting President like Asiwaju Tinubu did. Yet, Chief Obasanjo forgave him. As for me and Baba Obasanjo, he remains my father and leader, just as I am his son and follower. At no time did I abuse Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.<br /> <br /> "As a true party man, I campaigned vigorously for my party and its candidates. Now, the elections are over, and as a true sportsman, I thought I should congratulate those who won.<br /> <br /> "Short of any praise-singing, what I said in the congratulatory message that they chose to react to a week after it was published was that there was no way anyone can wish away the achievements of Asiwaju Tinubu in the nation’s political annals, particularly in Yoruba land."<br /> <br /> Part of the message also reads: "Although, I now belong to the opposition, your achievements transcend political divides and I am not ashamed to publicly acknowledge them.<br /> <br /> "I salute your courage, commitment, doggedness, forthrightness and tenacity of purpose even in the face of daunting opposition and challenges.<br /> <br /> "By your sheer wit and unwavering commitment to democratic ethos, true federalism and economic prosperity, you led the Alliance for Democracy (AD) from a one-party state to a regional party, and now a national party that is about to form the government at the centre."<br /> <br /> He therefore asked; "How do these translate to praise-singing? Are they not facts of history that I merely adumbrated?<br /> <br /> "He accused me of purchasing my election with money, the appropriate forum to prove that is the election petitions tribunal and not the pages of newspaper.<br /> <br /> "On the U.S case, I wish to state for the umpteenth time that the United States as the bastion of democracy and the Rule of Law would not lend itself to any form of abuse of the fundamental human rights of an innocent soul, especially one that has been arrested, tried and freed by its most trusted ally – the United Kingdom.<br /> <br /> "I am not running from any trial. All I have asked is for the relevant parties to follow due process - if they believe that I yet have a case to answer.<br /> <br /> "I believe in the supremacy of the almighty Allah who frustrates the signs of liars and makes fools of diviners, who turns wise men back and makes their knowledge foolish. It will not work.”<br /> <br /> Here is the press statement by Tinubu as issued by his press office:<br /> <br /> “The days of false adulation are gone in Nigerian politics. Fake praise singers like kashamu will find that their particular craft is no longer in vogue. During this election cycle, their practice has dramatically turned from the way things are to how things used to be.<br /> <br /> “Henceforth, there will be consequences for the positions a politician takes and the words they utter.<br /> <br /> “Politicians will no longer be able to change direction and loyalties as if they were changing clothes.<br /> <br /> Those in politics must know that responsibility and accountability shall now follow them. One can no longer walk both sides of the street at the same time. In case Kashamu has not noticed, the politics of principle defeated the politics of posturing.<br /> <br /> “That Kashumu undermined the democratic process by buying his victory does not mean he is part of the new Nigeria. He is merely an isolated vestige of a dying past. The man is an extinct species the realization of which will soon dawn on him.<br /> <br /> “For him to liken himself to Bola Tinubu is for a small rut to call itself a mountain. For Kashamu to call Tinubu a role model is Kashamu's admission that he does not know the meaning of the term. There are no grounds for comparison. There is only contrast. Tinubu has sacrificed years trying to bring democracy to Nigeria. He struggled in opposition to the powers that be. Without this, at times, lonesome fight and singular determination, the great change in Nigerian politics would not have happened as it did. TInubu is an architect of democracy. Kashamu is a failed demolisher of that which Tinubu has strived to build. Under Kashamu’s designs, our elections would be a wholly mercantile undertaking.<br /> <br /> “Meanwhile, Kashamu has blown wherever the prevailing winds took him. He stood for nothing and sacrificed nothing except the people’s welfare.<br /> <br /> “This same Kashamu rained insults on former President Obasanjo in a vicious campaign of calumny. Kashamu’s party, PDP sponsored defamatory documentaries full of lies and innuendos against me, General Muhammadu Buhari and other leaders of APC. Please keep your peace until you make your trip to the USA as a Senator elect. Upon your return we can then have a conversation. We can then proceed with your repudiation of the PDP with a promise that you will stop corrupting and fouling the political system.<br /> <br /> “That Kashamu would deign to compare himself with Tinubu is a distasteful insult to Tinubu and to anyone who knows Nigerian politics. If he has any sense of propriety, Kashamu should retract the corrupt missive and apologize for this latest lie to the public.<br /> <br /> “Kashamu is a factory of incoherent mischief aimed at achieving selfish goals. Before the election, Tinubu was his arch-enemy. Now he seeks to be the prodigal son returned home. This scam will fail.<br /> <br /> “Kashamu may be prodigal but he is no political son of Tinubu. Kashamu’s political lineage tracks to people like Bode George and President Jonathan. He should direct his encomiums to these men who are his true role models. Others are former president of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) and governorship candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria in Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu; former minister of sports, Bolaji Abdullahi, presidential aspirant of APC, Mr. Sam Ndah-Isaiah and Lagos State governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola.<br /> <br /> It was gathered that while the President-elect is not going to stand against the APC that won him the Presidency, he has resolved to pick technocrats and those he trusts to run his most important ministries.<br /> <br /> Towards this end, a source close to the president-elect and who had been privy to meetings being held, revealed: "It's the President-elect's personal wish to return former Nigeria’s oil Minister, David West to the Petroleum Ministry."<br /> <br /> According to him, David West is incorruptible, frugal, and loyal even in trying times.<br /> <br /> The source also revealed that while a lot of qualified technocrats are being bandied about and their names forwarded by party chiefs and lobbyists for the minister of finance, the inner circle of the President-elect is leaning toward the expertise of Dr. Idika Kalu, a World Bank specialist consultant, who, for many years, worked with the bank’s various development programmes catapulting the Korean economy from the third world into its present competitive global market.<br /> <br /> Moreover, explained the source, it was Idika Kalu who, in 2005, openly opposed the Paris debt relief as canvassed by the Olusegun Obasanjo administration. In an essay in the Washington based <i>AMERICA Mi DREAM Magazine</i>, the financial guru argued:<br /> <br /> "What Nigerian authorities have in fact, opted to do is a rather expensive debt refinancing. More bluntly, our first option in dealing with our enhanced revenue cannot be for a ‘debt exit treatment,’ but rather, for the further growth and development of the Nigerian economy. This is the sustainable way of helping Nigeria’s fight against poverty, which the Paris club clearly subscribes to."<br /> <br /> In recognising the leaning of the caucus to Idika kalu, the source believes that the President-elect, as in the case of David West, wants Idika Kalu in the ministry of finance. However, position of the coordinating minister of the economy will be scrapped, while there will be an economic advisory committee.<br /> <br /> For the ministry of sports, Abdulahi, Nigeria's former Minister of Sports, may return. He had resigned as minister in Goodluck Jonathan’ government, owing to his leaning towards the new PDP, the faction of the PDP, which his mentor, Senator Bukola Saraki and five governors had formed.<br /> <br /> Fashola and Akeredolu, it was learnt, are being considered as ministers of the Federal Capital Territory and Justice, respectively.<br /> <br /> On security, it was gathered that Buhari is considering one General Garba as Defence Minister, National Security Adviser (NSA) or Chief of Staff.<br /> <br /> General Cyril Iweze, a then young Igbo officer who served directly under Buhari in the First Division before the Nigeria Civil War, may lead the operation against Boko Haram.<br /> <br /> General Iweze was the Nigerian Commander of ECOMOG in Liberia. Mr. El-Rufai’s spokesperson, Samuel Aruwan, disclosed this in a statement.</b><br /> <br /> According to the statement, the gunmen trailed Markus Ishaya to his village, Atuku Kasa, Atuku Ward of Jema’a Local Government Area of the state and shot him several times. He was the governor-elect’s coordinator in Atuku Ward and did very well in mobilizing support.<br /> <br /> Mr. Aruwan said: "His family informed us that unknown gunmen stormed his residence and shot him several times.<br /> <br /> "The men, two in number, were well armed and did not pick any property in his residence except carrying out the ungodly act.<br /> <br /> "The Police have confirmed the incident. He had earlier urged his supporters to defend his election with the last drop of their blood.<br /> <br /> "In obedience to‎ his order, his supporters in Efon stormed the security check-point and engaged the security agents who they perceived as paving the way for the APC lawmakers to enter the state. In the ensuing gunfire, Modupe Olaiya was shot dead.<br /> <br /> "In response, Fayose rented a woman to pose as the mother of the deceased to claim that an APC lawmaker ‎shot Modupe dead.<br /> <br /> "Few days later, the real mother of the deceased showed up, raising the alarm in the media that the impersonator was a woman leader of Fayose’s party. She accused the impersonator of taking government’s inducement to implicate an innocent man", Olatubosun explained.<br /> <br /> The party urged the rights commission and ICC to open their books for the earlier petitions over rights abuses by the governor, saying he remained the greatest security risk to peace that is essential for the sustenance of Nigeria’s democracy.<br /> <br /> Fayose, who reacted through his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, said it was ridiculous and a thing of shame for the APC to call on NHRC and the ICC to sanction somebody exercising the mandate freely given to him by voters and the voters resolving on their own to defend the mandate.<br /> <br /> "The fact that APC leaders have sold their conscience for a pot of porridge does not mean others have done same. Morsi also faces charges in two other trials.</b><br /> <br /> Morsi supporters attacked opposition protesters outside the presidential palace in December 2012, sparking clashes that killed at least 10 people.<br /> <br /> Judge Ahmed Youssef dropped the murder charges against Morsi and said the sentence was instead linked to the “show of force” against protesters and unlawful detentions.<br /> <br /> The Cairo Criminal Court issued the verdict as Morsi and other defendants in the case – mostly other Muslim Brotherhood leaders – stood in a soundproof glass cage in a makeshift courtroom at Egypt’s national police academy.<br /> <br /> The country’s first freely elected president, Morsi took power after the 2011 overthrow of Hosni Mubarak. Friday Inedu, told the court that the accused committed the offences on March 17 at No.23, Asoju St., Ijora-Badia.<br /> <br /> Inedu said the accused conspired with others still at large and assaulted the complainant, one Olarewaju, by beating him and also stabbing him with a broken bottle on his body.<br /> <br /> According to the complainant, the accused was his ex-girlfriend.<br /> <br /> He said Olayinka and others stabbed him with broken bottles on the body, accusing him of cheating.<br /> <br /> Inedu said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 243 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.<br /> <br /> The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.<br /> <br /> The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 243 prescribes a seven-year jail term for grievous harm.<br /> <br /> The Senior Magistrate, Mr Adeyemi Amos, granted the accused bail in the sum of ₦50,000 with one surety in like sum.<br /> <br /> He adjourned the case till April 23 for further hearing. The impression that statement gives them is that Lagos is a land that nobody owns. They see it as an attempt to take away what belongs to them.</b><br /> <b><br /></b> According to Oxford Dictionaries, "no man’s land" means "disputed ground between the front lines or trenches of two opposing armies" or "a piece of unowned land or wasteland."<br /> <br /> But Lagos State is someone's land. Without going into the history of Lagos, one knows that there are traditional institutions and rites in Lagos that only the "sons of the soil" can participate in. For example, Lagos communities have traditional rulers called baale or oba: only sons of the soil of the respective communities can aspire to such positions.<br /> <br /> However, that is not the end of the story. Lagos is a unique state, especially given its status as a former federal capital of Nigeria cum seat of government for 77 years: January 1914 to November 1991. That status has given it a different feel from all other cities in Nigeria. It is not because it is by the sea: Calabar and Port Harcourt are also by the sea, but they are not like Lagos. Contrary to the fallacy spread by some people, Calabar was never the capital of Nigeria. Calabar once served as the seat of government of the Niger Coast Protectorate, Southern Protectorate and Oil River Protectorate. Similarly, neither Lokoja nor Zungeru was ever the capital of Nigeria. They were respectively the capital of the British protectorate of Northern Nigeria.<br /> <br /> The boom that Abuja has experienced since 1991 when Gen. Ibrahim Babangida moved the seat of government from Lagos is a pointer to the effect the Federal Capital Territory status can have on a city. But even Abuja cannot compare with Lagos because it was purpose-built to be an FCT, and therefore has no space for industrial estates and markets in all nooks and crannies of the city like Lagos.<br /> <br /> However, even those who call Lagos no man’s land don’t mean that Lagos does not indigenously belong to anybody. When you ask them what “no man’s land” means, you realise that what they mean is that Lagos is home to every Nigerian. It is a mini Nigeria. It is a place where all Nigerians feel they have a stake in because the funds of Nigeria helped in developing it, and its status as an FCT attracted more attention from Nigerians and foreigners than other states. Consequently, it is the most developed part of the nation.<br /> <br /> Even though Enugu, Ibadan and Kaduna were the respective capitals of Eastern Region, Western Region, and Northern Region from the pre-Independence days until 1967, they cannot compare to Lagos in any sphere.<br /> <br /> No doubt, as a city that is situated by the sea shore, Lagos has been developing from time immemorial. However, when it was made the capital of Nigeria, its development accelerated. The boost was such that even after the seat of government was relocated to Abuja, Lagos did not feel the impact much because the biggest companies and markets in Nigeria as well as infrastructure like bridges and roads had already been established, which had in turn made the state the most densely populated in the nation. These are not things you can relocate with the seat of government.<br /> <br /> And more importantly, Lagos has not been known to be a place where religious or ethnic crises occur. There can be crisis from street urchins, or motor park touts, or street gangs, but people are not usually attacked based on their ethnicity or religion, except for the ill-informed actions of the O’odua People’s Congress against the Hausa community in 1999/2000.<br /> <br /> Lagos State is in the South-West, and the South-West is the land of the Yoruba. Therefore, Lagos is Yoruba land. But it goes beyond that. Lagos derives its progress from its metropolitan and cosmopolitan nature. There are Nigerians who will tell you that beside their home state, they can only live in Abuja or Lagos, because of the FCT status, past and present. They don’t want to be in a place where they would feel like second-class citizens or people who are ever conscious of going against any local tradition.<br /> <br /> However, there are two sets of people that don’t mean well for Lagos. One group is the Yoruba who feel that the non-Yoruba in Lagos, especially the Igbo, must owe the air they breathe to the Yoruba: they must not raise their head; they must not laugh loud; they must not criticise any government policy in Lagos; they must not vote for any candidate of their choice; they must not contest elections in Lagos. If they default on any of these, they are threatened with expulsion or violence.<br /> <br /> The other group is the Igbo who tell the Yoruba that the Igbo developed Lagos, and that without the Igbo, Lagos would be a ghost town, and Lagosians would die of hunger. That is a silly statement to make. Although only a lover of falsehood would say that the Igbo have not contributed handsomely to the development of Lagos, yet Lagos has been developing at its own pace from time immemorial. If the Igbo did not settle in Lagos or invest in it, it would have continued to develop at its own pace. Lagos does not owe its success to the Igbo or any one ethnic group.<br /> <br /> The excuse these two dangerous groups always give is that the other group started the ethnic baiting. But that is a lie. An ethnic supremacist is an ethnic supremacist. The same goes for an ethnic intolerant person or a bigot. Such people don’t need any provocation to unleash the venom in them. They only pray for an opportunity to present itself. Phrases like “you people” dot their speeches. Whenever a person speaks, they usually don’t attack the person’s speech: they swiftly malign the person’s ethnic group. It does not matter to them that the person does not speak on behalf of any ethnic group. Sometimes, they will be quick to tell you that they don’t hate the ethnic group they are bashing but “are simply speaking the truth.” They may even remind you that they have friends from that ethnic group or have family members who are married to people from that ethnic group.<br /> <br /> These dangerous elements must not be allowed to destroy the peace and harmony in Lagos. There is a difference between “citizen” and “indigene”. Every Nigerian is a citizen in every part of Nigeria. But not every Nigerian is an indigene of wherever he or she resides. Every Nigerian can vote and be voted anywhere in Nigeria. That is what distinguishes a Nigerian from a Ghanaian who lives in Nigeria.<br /> <br /> Nigerians feel happy any time they hear that a person with Nigerian ancestry has won a political position in Europe or North America, but some ethnic haters feel angry whenever they hear that a Nigerian has won an election in his or her state of residence. Their narrow argument is: “Can you allow that to happen in your state?” But comparing a state like Lagos - a former FCT - with another Nigerian state is baseless. Lagos can only somewhat be compared with Abuja, the FCT. If you want to compare states, compare Oyo with Enugu, Ogun with Anambra, Ekiti with Ebonyi, etc.<br /> <br /> Secondly, when a people have a large population in a community, it becomes easier for them to win local elections there. That is why the Yoruba win local elections in the London Borough of Southwark, United Kingdom, where Peckam is located. If a large number of the Yoruba or Hausa or Ijaw settle in Nnewi or Aba, they can win elections there. It is only natural.<br /> <br /> And when a “non-indigene” wins an election, such should not be seen as a threat or an affront. It is actually a blessing. Such cities where settlers participate in governance are always ahead in all developmental indices. They attract people. They attract investors. They continue to grow faster. That is why Lagos is miles ahead of other states. That is why Lagos is self-sustaining even though it has no oil. Human resource is the greatest resource on earth. In Africa, we are our brother’s keeper; and at MTN, we align with the concerted efforts of the South African government in stopping the attacks and protecting the lives and properties of foreign nationals, most especially Nigerians", he said.<br /> <br /> Goodluck said as a mark of its support to the victims of the attacks, MTN Group had provided financial support to the transit camps, where many were presently being sheltered, adding that the money provided would be used to purchase food, medicals, bedding, clothing and other necessities.<br /> <br /> Against the backdrop of some calls for reprisal on some Nigerian businesses with South African affiliation, he said such knee-jerk reactions would be counter-productive and unjustifiable.<br /> <br /> He stated: "MTN Nigeria is a Nigerian business employing 99 per cent Nigerians. Out of our over 6,000 staff, only 12 are expatriates; the rest are Nigerians. Also, when you look at our value chain, over 500,000 Nigerians are gainfully employed indirectly by MTN. He received much hospitality in Jebba, where unlike in other villages he met people who had heard of him.<br /> <br /> He further explained that about 20 people set off with him from Jebba and after some miles, 18 turned back, but the other two were more strong-minded and followed him.<br /> <br /> <i>The Traveller</i> narrated how they encountered armed robbers close to Mokwa, but that, fortunately, he had already met one of them in Jebba and the would-be robber ended up giving him ₦200 for ‘pure’ (sachet) water.<br /> <br /> Hashimu said he continued his trip from Mokwa to Kudu, then from Kutigi to Bida, and then to Suleja, after which he arrived Abuja yesterday.<br /> <br /> Hundreds of youths in the FCT lined up along Kubwa expressway from Dutse junction to welcome Hashimu, who they described as a hero. Gen. I hold in contempt the loathing and subsequent attacks suffered by our brothers and sisters from the continent.<br /> <br /> The majority of us South Africans, perceive and carry ourselves as Africans and believe what we have witnessed in some parts of our country goes against the grain of who we are as a people, our constitution, and the principles of Ubuntu that we so dearly adhere to.<br /> I personally extend my sincerest apologies to you.<br /> <br /> As my colleagues and I prepare for our Pan-African Trade Show, INDABA, from 9 to 11 May 2015, in the city of Durban, we wish to reassure all INDABA delegates and foreign nationals coming into South Africa that our country is safe for you to visit. We do not take for granted the support we have enjoyed over the years from our brothers and sisters throughout the continent in contributing to the growth of tourism into our country. We are also appreciative of the backing of our counterparts on the continent who have ensured that our flagship Trade Shows, INDABA and Meetings Africa, have grown in stature in the years they have been in existence.<br /> <br /> We are heartened and uplifted that this matter is being managed at the highest level of the land. President Jacob Zuma has assigned the South African Ministers of Home Affairs, Police, State Security to work with provinces affected to contain the violence. Task teams have been established to coordinate the response.<br /> <br /> Additional law enforcement officers have been mobilised from around the country and deployed to the affected areas to enforce the law and prevent further attacks. Since Monday morning 310 suspects have been arrested. All district disaster management centres have been placed on high-alert and a 24-hour call centre has been established. Shelters have been set-up to accommodate displaced foreign nationals and basic amenities such as water, sanitation, and healthcare are being provided.<br /> <br /> Government is working closely with the UNHCR, UNICEF as well as non-governmental organisations to provide food, psycho-social and other support to those affected. The process of reintegrating those who were displaced back into their communities has begun. Community engagements are being conducted through the Communities in Dialogue programme, Community Safety Forums, Ward Committees and through Community Development Workers, amongst others.<br /> <br /> The South African Constitution protects the rights of all people living within the country, South Africans and foreigners alike and everything is being done within the law to ensure safety of all citizens and foreign nationals irrespective of their status.<br /> <br /> On behalf of South African Tourism, please accept our sincerest apologies during this time as we extend our hand of friendship to you.
