<b>MINNA, NIGERIA - Wife of the Niger State Governor, Dr. Amina Bello, on Thursday said she would work as a medical practitioner at the State General Hospital, Minna.</b></div>

The governor's wife, who visited the female and pediatric wards at the General Hospital, Minna, said as a consultant gynaecologist, she would want to contribute to the treatment of women in the hospital.</div>

My visit is to see how I can contribute to the society. That is what I do. I see pregnant women, I see women with problems, I operate on women on caesarian section; that is what I intend to do as my own contribution. The hospital should expect better services. </div>

I would like to contribute my own quota, visit some of these women, spend time with them, helping with their surgeries and deliveries. </div>

<b>LAGOS, NIGERIA - A 33-year-old man, Stephen Itodo, has been arrested and charged before an Oshodi Magistrates' Court for raping a mentally deranged woman (not pictured above).</b></div>

The incident reportedly happened at Alhaji Shehu Close, Oshodi, Lagos, when Itodo sneaked into the room the victim was kept in her father's compound where she was receiving treatment from some traditional healers to cure her madness, and raped her when her family had gone out for the day's business.</div>

It was a neighbour who suspected Itodo's moves as he entered the room, who went to peep and see him on top of the lunatic. The neighbour raised an alarm and before he could escape, he was apprehended.</div>

But in his statement in court, Itodo denied raping the woman, claiming she gave her consent for him to have sex with her.</div>

A relative of the victim narrated to newsmen how the despicable act came to be:</div>

She could not have put up any resistance because of her state. If he had admitted and begged, we would have considered settling without involving the police. There is even a doctor's report, which confirmed that there was penetration.</blockquote>

When the charges were read to Itodo, he pleaded not guilty to the act of rape and was granted bail in the sum of ₦50,000 by Magistrate Akeem Fashola while he is to be remanded in Kirikiri Prison custody, until he meets the bail conditions.</div>

<b>Martins Ugwu Okpeh, from Benue State, in 2006 was the best man to his childhood friend, Dr. George Davidson, a medical doctor practising in Jos, when he allegedly stole the academic credentials and used the credentials to secure employment at the federal ministry.</b></div>

Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Shogunle, said an anonymous petition from the ministry prompted the Police to begin discreet investigation. It was then revealed that Ugwu adopted the identity of Dr. Davidson, a true medical doctor on residency training in Jos. He added: "Martins Ugwu has been parading himself as a medical doctor in the Federal Ministry of Health in Abuja for almost one decade and was among medical volunteers trained by the ministry in conjunction with African-Union Support to Ebola Outbreak in West-Africa (ASEOWA) mission in Liberia."</div>

Confessing his crimes, Ugwu, 44 years old and a father of five, said that he actually took the certificates from his friend and joined the health ministry.</div>

He confessed: "I never opted for clinical services to avoid damage that may occur. I went into administration and research. It is in the health services, research and statistics that all the fraud in the health sector is found. I have great remorse but its my desire to save my country that pushed me into this. I have great passion for Nigeria. I participated in the Ebola mission and much more and have not even been paid. Severally, there were biometrics verification, but I survived them, I was the NMA chairman in 2008. Federal Ministry of Health, I don't think has the mechanisms for that. The ministry is porous."</div>

According to the DFPRO, Ugwu has never passed any examination set by the ministry that would have warranted his promotion.</div>

Mr Ugwu is to be arraigned in court for the offenses of theft, impersonating a medical doctor, wearing and carrying token used by medical doctors, dishonestly receiving what he is not due for, framing of incorrect document with intent to cause injury, breach of official trust among other offenses.</div>

Two sisters Yogita Rameshbhai Nandwana, five, and Anisha, three, and their 18-month-old brother Harsh, are probably the heaviest children in the world. The kids are unable to walk and even breathe properly due to their incredible weight – 34kg, 48kg and 15kg respectively – and their poor father has nothing to do but to sell his own kidney to fund life-saving treatment.</div>

<b>LAGOS, NIGERIA – On the occasion of Philips' sixth consecutive <a href="http://www.philips.com/C2CAfrica">Cape Town to Cairo roadshow</a>, Philips in collaboration with <i>Ori Iyanrin Primary Healthcare Center </i>(the “Healthcare Centre”) unveiled an extensive overhaul and refurbishment of the mother and child care facilities at the Healthcare Centre. Philips has upgraded the facilities in the labour, paediatric and new born baby wards, designing them to support the well-being and recovery of expectant mothers and their new born babies. It is anticipated that over time, as a result of this pioneering project, many lives will also be saved.</b></div>

The Healthcare Center, located in Iru/Victoria Island, LCDA, Lagos,has a very high patient in-flowwith an average of 300-400 outpatients per month, as well as 30-40 follow up appointments per week. The Healthcare Center records an average of twenty (20) births per month.The labour, pediatric and new born units in the Healthcare Center prior to the refurbishment were in need of an upgrade.</div>

The Healthcare Center is the largest amongst three primary healthcare centers in the district- Oniru Primary Health Centre and Takwa Bay Island Primary Health Centre being the other two; all of which have minimal manpower. Therefore the upgrading of the Healthcare Centerwill benefit all three centers, and enable them to provide more efficientpatient care.</div>

<b>Calming environment for mothers and babies</b></div>

The project, undertaken by Philips has resulted in a complete overhaul and renovation of existing mother and child care facilities. Philips began by paintingand decoratingthe wards in order to create a serene and calming environment; Philips has also installed new toilets, tables, chairs, beds and cabinets.</div>

In addition, all the light fittings have been retrofitted with the latest Philips LED lighting solutions; LED lighting enables rest and recovery, as it’s not as harsh as conventional fluorescent lighting, it requires minimal maintenance and also helps to reduce energy consumption. Earlier, due to frequent power outages as well as poor and sporadic lighting, doctors found it very challenging to deliver babies at night time, this problem is now eliminated. This new innovative solar LED lighting provides safe and uninterrupted illumination, while saving costs.</div>

VISIQ’s unique combination of mobility, ease of use and image quality, will enable clinicians in the Healthcare Centre to carry out comprehensive obstetric and abdominal scans themselves rather than referring patients to larger ultrasound centers or hospitals. This enables fast diagnosis and treatment.</div>

Designed to be both portable and intuitive, and using time-tested physiological measurement algorithms the Efficia monitor will empower staff at the Healthcare Centre with actionable, care-specific informationrequired to make patient management decisions and provide fast and efficient patient care.</div>

Furthermore, to ensure proper usage of the technology, Philips is conducting an extensive training workshop at the Healthcare Center for midwives, maternity nurses, obstetricians and ultrasound practitioners; the objective is to provide hands-on application training, as well as a clinical refresher course on where to look and what to look for, and how to use this information to guide diagnoses and treatment decisions.</div>

Breastfeeding is fundamental to reducing infant mortality. It can protect against common childhood infections such as neonatal sepsis. According to the WHO (World Health Organization), exclusive breastfeeding for a baby’s first six months and partial breastfeeding into a child’s second year, reduces a child’s chances of succumbing to several preventable illnesses including diarrhoea and acute respiratory tract infections.</div>

As per previous years, Philips is setting up a maternity screening camp during the Nigerian phase of the <a href="http://www.philips.com/C2CAfrica">Cape Town to Cairo roadshow</a>. The screening camp at the Healthcare Center will give expectant mothers in the local community the opportunity to avail themselves of a free ultrasound screening. For the majority of the women in the area this will be their first time to have a scan during their pregnancy. A pre-natal screening ensures that any complications can be detected in advance of labour; if any of the women require further medical attention they will be taken care of immediately at theHealthcare Center.</div>

Speaking at the inauguration of the refurbished facilities, Robin Armstrong, General Manager, Philips Healthcare, West Africa said: “It gives me great pleasure to unveil the renovation of the mother and child care facilitates at the Healthcare Center. This project will hopefully ease the burden for the healthcare workers in the district, and in time save many lives as well. Most expectant women visiting this facility can now have access to care which will help to keep both them and their babies healthy.”</div>
