<b>MAIDUGURI, NIGERIA - Nigeria’s service chiefs appear to be taking the President’s matching orders to defeat Boko Haram within three months, with all the seriousness it requires.</b></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
To this end, the Chief of Army Staff, Major-General Tukur Buratai and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Sadique Abubakar have arrived in Maiduguri for an assessment of the military operations against the insurgents.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Inspector-General of Police and the National Security Adviser are also in the entourage.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, after decorating the officers whose appointments were announced two months ago, lamented the upsurge in the wave of the terror attacks in the north east, challenging the service chiefs not to fail Nigerians.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He charged them to be accountable for all men and equipment under their command, with the welfare of the troops uppermost in their minds.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The President also pledged to give them the needed support, while charging them to protect innocent civilians as well as respect the rights of combatants to earn the support of Nigerians and the international community.</div>

On assumption of office on May 29, the President had ordered that the military’s command centre be moved to the troubled north east to ensure more effective prosecution of the anti-terrorism campaign.</div>

<b>ABUJA, NIGERIA - Operatives of Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police on Saturday arrested some officials of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) at Agura Hotel, Abuja, where election of a new leadership for the association was being held.</b></div>

It was learnt that the arrest was based on a petition by the outgoing president of the council, Henry Nwabueze, alleging that some youths planned to cause a breach of peace in Abuja.</div>

The security men later reinforced and took over the hotel, apparently to frustrate  the election of the new officials of the council.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
But the action of the security personnel did not stop the election as NYCN officials, who escaped arrest, relocated to another location where they conducted the poll.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

It was learnt that a leading contestant for the council leadership, who eventually emerged as the NYCN president, Ikenga Ugochinyere, and the electoral officers were earlier invited by the FCT Police Command for questioning.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Following the operation by the security agencies, a press conference earlier fixed by the council to present the new leadership was aborted.</div>

Chairman of the Electoral Committee, John Nwakama, who declared Ugochinyere winner of the election, said the era of imposition of candidate on the council was over.</div>

According to him, Ugochinyere  polled a total of 209 from 273 delegates, who were earlier accredited to vote on Thursday, adding that some of the delegates left the venue following police harassment.</div>

A statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said the appointment takes immediate effect.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The appointment which was announced Tuesday night in Abuja came on the heels of protests by the former militants over the non-payment of their allowances.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Adesina in the statement said the appointment of Boroh is expected to douse the tension over the outstanding allowances.</div>

Brig. Boroh, whose appointment takes immediate effect, is to take over the responsibilities of the former Special Adviser to President Jonathan on Niger Delta who also doubled as Coordinator of the Amnesty Programme. </div>

The appointment of a new Coordinator for the Amnesty Programme is expected to lead to the speedy resolution of recent hitches in its implementation such as the non-payment of outstanding allowances to ex-militants.</div>

The Amnesty Programme was established by late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua in 2009 to calm the nerves of Niger Delta militants who were disrupting oil production on account of alleged maginalisation of the oil rich region in the distribution of the oil wealth in the country.</div>

He immediately went to Konduga, headquarters of Konduga Local Government Area, where he launched <b><i>Operation Zaman Lafiya Dole</i></b>, a new operational code for the counter-insurgency fight in the Northeast.</div>

Accompanied by Borno State Deputy Governor Zannah Umar Mustapha and other military top brass, the COAS appealed to the troops and other security agencies.</div>

He also called for collaboration from the general public to end the Boko Haram crisis, stressing that "without cooperation, determination and discipline among all and sundry, it would be difficult to defeat terrorists".</div>

The ongoing activities of Boko Haram is assuming an alarming dimensions in Borno and other parts of the Northeast. The time to crush Boko Haram and other criminal activities in this country is now or never.</blockquote>

An associate of the former NSA who visited <i>Daily Trust'</i>s<i> o</i>ffice to lodge a complaint over the report which appeared in <b><i>Daily Trust </i></b>yesterday stated that Col. Dasuki was worried about the insinuation when "all his life as NSA he was committed to the safety and security of lives of Nigerians, not just the people of the North East."</div>

The associate said the former NSA was very bitter about the report considering the fact the Col. Dasuki is a northerner, a Nigerian and a Muslim, hence it would be unthinkable that he would be involved in a scheme that led to death and misery in the North-East.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to the associate, "Col. Dasuki cannot comprehend the motive behind the allegation. We don’t play politics with the security of lives and property. The media should be wary of those who use its platform for mischief."</div>

He itemised some of the programmes that Col Dasuki spearheaded to ensure there is security in the country to include, the soft approach to counter-terrorism, where repentant terrorists and victims are rehabilitated. </div>

"He also ensured that the 22 Local Government Areas in the North-East which were under Boko Haram control were liberated completely; Sambisa forest, Gwoza, Baga and Bama were also freed; cattle rustlers were sent packing from the North-West; and some intelligence steps were taken through collaboration with neighbouring countries and other nationals in containing the excesses of the terrorists."</div>

The associate said the former NSA put in place a system that utilised "ways and means" to counter the insurgency.</div>

It would be recalled that operatives of the DSS held Col. Dasuki under house arrest on Thursday and left his residence late Friday after seizing the former NSA's travelling documents.</div>
