MONGUNO, NIGERIA - Major-General Babagana Monguno was born in 1957, attended Kings College, Lagos and holds a Bachelor's degree in Architecture and a Masters in International Relations. He was said to be to longest serving Adjutant of the prestigious military institution and his alma mater, the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna. 

Monguno also served as Commander, Guards Brigade at the end of the reign of the former President Olusegun Obasanjo and towards the beginning of the administration the President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua. He introduced special allowance for Guards Brigade, which soldiers called 'Monguno Allowance'.

He was made the Deputy Commandant, National Defence College (NDC), and later the Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI) responsible for gathering and compiling intelligence from all the armed forces, otherwise known as Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), from July 2009 to September 2011.

He then served as the Chief of Logistics at the Nigerian Defense headquarters and later as Commandant of the Nigerian Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) in Minna.

Prior to his retirement from the Nigerian army he was considered for Chief of Army Staff position. Monguno voluntarily retired from the Nigerian Army in September 2013 after turning 56, the age ceiling for Majors General in the Nigerian army.

Major-General Monguno is the nephew of elder statesman former politician, Minister of Petroleum, Internal Affairs, Mines and Power, OPEC Chairman and philanthropist, Dr Shettima Ali Monguno. 

He is an erudite polyglot, as he speaks the three main Nigerian languages (Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo) fluently.

He was appointed the National Security Adviser on July 13, 2015 by President Muhammadu Buhari.
