<b>In 2011, a particular leading candidate came out with the ‘I have no Shoes’ campaign while the opposition kept screaming that Goodluck was not synonymous with good governance. Whether he really had no shoes and whether Goodluck is not synonymous with good governance is a debate for another day. Today, the opposition has grown bigger than what it used to be. Essentially, reducing the political debates ahead of 2015 Elections to two parties, the PDP and the APC.</b></div>

Ordinarily, I need not define who a Buharist is and who a Jonathanian is but for the benefits of non-Nigerians who may be reading this and for the purpose of this write up, Jonathanians are the fanatical and sympathetic supporters of President Jonathan of Nigeria while Buharists are the fanatical and sympathetic supporters of Gen Muhammadu Buhari- one of the leading opposition figures in Nigeria’s political settings.</div>

When Buhari emerged as the APC presidential candidate for the 2015 Elections, the first congratulatory message from a political party came from the PDP with the tone of that message suggesting that there was more to it than met the eyes. The message was point blank: the only thing that has changed in GMB is his changing into a night suit. We recalled that one of the men paid to cry more than the bereaved for the president had come out crying to the world that if the opposition party survived beyond nine months, we should call him a Bastard. Trust Nigerians, they have given him an overdose of Bastard definition. The same man, some days ago, came out in his usual controversial manner to tell us that our dear president is the Jesus of our time. Most of the president’s supporters, in their attempt to defend him always end up confusing their audience the more. We find it hard to explain that the Federal Government of Nigeria couldn’t legitimately or illegitimately purchase arms from the black market let alone the International Market while Mr. Government Ekpemupolo an ex-militant succeeded in purchasing six warships for the purpose of defending Federal Government properties.</div>

Several leading figures have lately attacked the president: Chief of them was the Nobel Laureate: Prof Wole Soyinka who likened President Jonathan to Nebuchadnezzar of the Bible. He literally took the insult to the corridors of power. (Although some online versions have it that our Dear Prof has finally and systematically endorsed our President by reminding us that he is the only candidate without any ties to the military) As if that was not enough, Former President Obasanjo gave Insult a direct access to Aso Rock with the publication of his Book – My Watch, thereby allowing insult to have an audience with the president. He not only called President Jonathan weak and incompetent, he detailed his incompetence while also revealing to us that we have five presidents in Nigeria and that President Jonathan was the weakest in the chain. Recall, a chain is as strong as its weakest point. As if that wasn’t enough, Governor Fashola of Lagos at the last APC convention listed out all the unfulfilled promises of our dear president.  Fashola noted that Mr. President’s list of unfulfilled promises is competing with his list of disappointments, though he wasn’t sure which list was longer.</div>

The president must be duly acknowledged as a man that has the ability to tolerate the opposition to a fault but my fear is that if he eventually wins his re-election, will he still be this tolerant of the opposition? One thing for sure, former President Obasanjo couldn’t have been this tolerant. I also have my fears about the opposition. Should APC win, will they be matured enough to manage their success? Will APC not eventually be the Botanical name for PDP in the long run? The implosion in Ogun state, the outright loss of Ekiti State, the logjam in Rivers and Edo state are a pointer towards that observation.</div>

Conclusively, President Jonathan deserves all the respect he can get and I have always maintained that Nigeria is a reflection of Nigerians. Whatever the outcome of the 2015 General Elections turns out to be, we hope that it will eventually reflect the wish of Nigerians.</div>

Both parties are reported to have gone back to the drawing board to thinker with their position zoning arrangements. </b></div>

The country’s two major political parties the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Party have kick-started a realignment of forces in order to upstage each other in the forthcoming 2015 presidential election.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The realignment is said to be one of the fallouts of the emergence of Professor Yemi Osinbajo as the vice- presidential candidate of the APC on Wednesday.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Both parties, SUNDAY PUNCH learnt, might have changed their zoning formula to ensure that the selection of Osinbajo would not hurt their chances at the polls.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Osinbajo, a former Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, is a native of Ikenne, Ogun State in the South-West. His wife, Dolapo, is a granddaughter of the first Premier of the Western Region and foremost Yoruba politician, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.</div>

It was learnt that the PDP was jolted by the APC’s choice of Osinbajo as the running mate of its presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.)</div>

Following the zoning of the APC vice presidential ticket to the South-West, the ruling party is said to have revisited its zoning formula. The plan, sources say, is to zone some of the top positions in government to the zone as part of measures to woo the region in the 2015 presidential election.</div>

SUNDAY PUNCH gathered that besides the speakership of the House of Representatives, which the PDP reportedly agreed to zone to the South-West, the party also, planned to cede some key positions to the zone.</div>

But even as the PDP makes its move, the APC is also said to have gone back to the drawing board to ensure that the selection of Osinbajo by Buhari does not affect its fortunes in the South -South and South-East.</div>

SUNDAY PUNCH learnt that the APC might zone the Senate Presidency and the Speakership of the House of Representatives, to the South-East and the South-South, if it wins the 2015 elections. The two regions were being considered for the posts because the North and South-West have the President and Vice-President slots.</div>

While Jonathan is widely believed to enjoy massive support in the two regions, some of the APC’s most prominent powerbrokers, including a former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, and Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State are from the two regions.</div>

Amaechi was one of those considered for the vice-presidential slot before Osinbajo was selected and Okorocha had contested for the presidential ticket and lost to Buhari.</div>

A change in the formula might also be a plan by the party to ensure that members of the two parties from these regions are given a sense of belonging.</div>

A chieftain of the APC, who pleaded anonymity, said even though the zoning of positions was yet to be finalised, leaders of the party have agreed on a new arrangement in principle.</div>

He said, “Apart from the Senate Presidency and the Speakership of the House of Representatives, there is also the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and key ministries that can be given to the zone that didn’t get the President and VP slot.”</div>

Also speaking to our correspondent, the South-East Zonal Publicity Secretary of the APC, Osita Okechukwu, said the PDP might not be able to get as many votes as it got during the 2011 elections.</div>

He said, “We will stop the jumbo votes they (PDP) give themselves in these areas. In 2011, General Muhammadu Buhari did not have agents in these places; today the mega platform that we have, which is the APC, has the capacity and will deploy agents there.</div>

“For example, in Imo there were about 1.4 million voters, they claimed that 1.3 million voted for Jonathan, meaning there was over 90 per cent voters turn out which has never happened anywhere in the world.</div>

“In Rivers, out of about 1.9 million voters, they claimed 1.8m voted for Jonathan. This kind of turnout was not recorded in Kano or even Lagos. People are wiser now. We will not allow this kind of fraud this time around.”</div>

Prior to now, there have been complaints from some stalwarts of the PDP that President Goodluck Jonathan had marginalised the South-West in his appointments. Jonathan is from the South-South while his deputy, Nnamadi Sambo is from the North–West. The Senate President is from North-Central while the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, hails from the North-West.</div>

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Deputy Senate President and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives are from the South-East.</div>

Although the PDP zoned the speakership of the House to the South-West in 2011, its candidate, Mrs. Mulikat Akande-Adeola, lost to Tambuwal.</div>

<i>SUNDAY PUNCH</i> learnt that the president’s move to pacify the South-West which voted massively for Jonathan in the 2011 was the reason he held meetings with some Yoruba leaders recently.</div>

President Jonathan had at the Yoruba Unity Summit in Ile-Ife, Osun State on November 28, 2014, reportedly said it pained him that the South-West lost the speakership in 2011.</div>

He had said, “The last time, it was difficult for me because I insisted that the Southwest must get the Speaker. Of course, I couldn’t go through with it because some of us within the Southwest didn’t want it, based on some personal reasons. I am still suffering from that till today.”</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to 2011 election statistics, the South-West which had 14.29m registered voters was second to the North-West, which had 19.8 million registered voters.</div>

North-Central had 11.62 million voters, while 10.7 million people registered as voters in the North-East. South-East and South-South had 7.02 million and 8.9 million voters respectively.</div>

The Chairman of the PDP in Ekiti State, Mr. Idowu Faleye, said the President planned to give appointments to the Yoruba if he wins in 2015.</div>

“Jonathan is going give more key positions to the region. Looking at the percentage of votes captured in the last election, even he was shocked that the Yoruba did the best they could at that time,” he said.</div>

However, the Chairman, Organisation and Mobilisation Committee of the PDP in the South-West, Buruji Kashamu, said Jonathan had compensated the South-West for the loss of the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives zoned to the South-West by appointing someone from the region as his Chief of Staff.</div>

“If they (APC) like, they can choose their presidential candidate, the vice presidential and all their governorship candidates from the South-West. The only thing that I know is that APC is a one-man show. We, the Yoruba, are not dull and foolish. We know what is good for us,” he said.</div>

Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe State has accused his predecessor in office, Danjuma Goje, of sending political thugs, known as "Kalare Boys" to assassinate him when he visited Kashere town on a courtesy call to the federal university there.</div>

The governor was reacting to a statement released by the All Progressives Congress [APC] on Saturday in which it accused Mr. Dankwambo of clamping down on APC members in the state and ordering the destruction of properties of the former governor and also arresting members of his family.</div>

Mr. Dankwambo visited Kashere, the home town of Mr. Goje on Thursday.</div>

During his visit, Gov. Dankwambo personally ordered the removal of all APC billboards and posters in the town, ordered the police and the army to break into Senator Goje’s family house, where they broke down doors, teargassed and arrested his relations, including children.</div>

“The governor also ordered the same security forces to break into the family house of Senator Goje's wife, where they similarly destroyed doors and teargassed the occupants, including the 90-year-old father of Senator Goje's wife and the Senator's wife's 70-year-old stepmother, while all her sisters and brothers were arrested", the APC said in its release by its spokesperson, Lai Mohammed.</div>

If it was impossible for our party to conduct free and fair primary elections, why must I remain in it? What they did and the way a candidate was nominated was not what we agreed upon. We had a clear understanding of how the primary election was to be conducted. But, the rule was changed in the middle of the game.</div>

I was shocked when the party said less than 10 per cent of those who were supposed to make up the delegates list would be used for the primary election. That was far from the channel to be employed in picking a popular candidate. PDP in Oyo was not fair because a level playing ground was not provided for all. Despite our complaints, the party turned a deaf ear and I had to move on.</div>

Oyo is not alone in this problem, some other states are also having the same issue. In Ebonyi, members moved en masse to LP to protest the same kind of injustice I complained about. If there is justice, things will work better in the PDP.</div>

According to Jere, about 10 per cent of the arrested and repatriated illegal immigrants were from Cameroun, Chad and Mali.</div>

There is nothing wrong in what those people have done. There is freedom of movement. Thus, those who left have the right to move on. It is not the first time such things will happen in politics and it will not be the last time. Movement of members among political parties is not limited to the PDP alone. We have people joining the party from the All Progressives Congress and the rest. We are in the season of movement from one party to the other.</div>

I don’t know what you mean by big players. Alao-Akala, yes he is a big player in Oyo State politics, but what is the parameter for ascribing the tag ‘big player’ to Seyi Makinde. Is it that he had contested before or what is his pedigree?</div>

<b><i>Considering his financial contribution to the party, people say you cannot strike out his name from the list of people with big influence in PDP.</i></b></div>

Are you saying that everything in politics is for sale? He is not the only one that has contributed to the party; everybody has done the same. The media have the responsibility to put things in proper context. Alao-Akala is a big player but we have a strategy to cage him. With all due respect, how many people have followed him in Ogbomoso? PDP still has its federal lawmakers in the area; Mulikat Akande-Adeola is the House of Representatives’ Majority Leader, she is still with us; Segun Odebunmi is there; Saka Balogun is still in PDP; Senator Ayo Adeseun is still with us. These are big players and we are comfortable with those who are with us.</div>

Anybody with ₦2m can get the kind of crowd you are talking about. What we are talking about is people of substance, not crowd. Let me not talk too much about individuals. We are just okay in Oyo PDP. It is sad they have gone and I wish them good luck.</div>

<b><i>There are controversies surrounding the primary election that produced you as the governorship candidate. One of them is a ruling in an Abuja High Court sitting, which nullified the exercise. What is you reaction to this?</i></b></div>

What sort of politician would generate delegates’ list in all the 33 councils in Oyo State and present it to a court as the authentic list?</div>

<b><i>But a judge gave a ruling which spelt out the list of delegates to be used but the PDP set it aside and settled for statutory delegates. Is this right?</i></b></div>

Parties are at liberty to decide the delegates they want to use. They can combine ad hoc and the statutory or use what they want. PDP made a decision and we played by the rule.</div>

<i><b>In clear terms, did Oyo PDP act outside the rule it set to guide primary elections?</b></i></div>

The party decides what it wants in an election like this. You cannot go to court and generate a list for the primary. If the National Working Committee of the party could no longer function, then, will the court take over its duty in a democratic setting? That is not possible. It doesn’t make sense to me. I think the party did the right thing.</div>

<b><i>Two PDP ward congresses were held in the state with no results. Why was it difficult or impossible to conduct a credible ward congress in the state?</i></b></div>

There were results but some people were trying to be funny. During the first ward congress, some big people went to the wards to snatch result sheets. The second one was okay but some people went to court because they have money to generate their own list. They got the court to dabble into the work of the National Working Committee. At least, it is all in the past now. We demonstrated internal democracy in PDP, instead of selecting or imposing candidates.</div>

<b><i>People have linked you with Senate President David Mark, claiming that he imposed you on the state PDP. How true is this?</i></b></div>

I worked with Mark for eight years when I was in the Senate. He is a big boss but he did not come to Ibadan to organise the primary elections. I have friends and he is someone who is very honest with me. He is a big brother. The last time we met, he told me that we must ensure we win back Oyo State. People have friends and I will not deny Mark.</div>

<b><i>What did he do to ensure you emerged ahead of Alao-Akala and others?</i></b></div>

We are very confident. Otherwise, we will not be in this race. We have different styles and approach to politics. Some candidates make so much noise but let us wait and see the result.</div>

In itself, it speaks to many things: it speaks to the rising stock of the APC party as an (the) authentic, formidable opposition party to the overdrawn dominance of the ruling party in our national life. It speaks to the impressive number of high-worth personalities, the surfeit of choice, in the APC. It speaks to the credibility of the process of selection. And, above all, it speaks to the seriousness and huge premium placed on the office of VP by the party; that it ceases to be a “mere appendage,” a “spare tyre,” of the president.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The reasons for the tussle are not farfetched. It is a combination of lessons of recent history, contested personal ambition, and the contending forces at play.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Gone, it seems, are those days when it was entirely left to a Presidential-candidate-Olusegun Obasanjo to sleep and wake up with a name of whom he wanted as his VP, and the whole party ceding the right to him without question. Or when an outgoing President Obasanjo could solely determine not only who succeeds him but, indeed, who the deputy to that successor would be. All of that was owed to both the stage of development of the PDP and the force of personality of General Obasanjo.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
But APC is not the then Peoples Democratic Party, its history and composition being entirely different. Still it should have been easy for APC as an amalgam of two political parties and two strong leaders, Bola Tinubu and Muhammadu Buhari, with vaulting ambition to be president. And since the two came from differing ethnic groups it was easy to see that if one yielded to the other for president, the other yields to the one for vice-president.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
But not that easy, it turned out. In a country beset and riven with primordial challenges and rivalries; and a country whose people have found themselves unable or incapable of rising above base animalistic instinct of self rather than national interest, then the easy is oft garbed in masquerade of thorns.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
From day one it was clear that Tinubu had his eyes on being the president of Nigeria – one day, and, as Nigerians are wont to saying, if it was “the will of God.” It is not particularly an odd or unjustified, or even undeserved ambition. From humble, even painfully cloudy, beginnings he has risen to become arguably the greatest political generalissimo of our present democracy. He is a man imbued with genuine vision, passion, and intellect for uplifting his people and country; and someone singularly prepared to make huge personal sacrifices in pursuit of his mission. But he is no Aminu Kano or Adelabu Adegoke of yore to whom it is all without consideration for natural need for self, material security, in the process.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
To Tinubu’s credit, he is the architect of modern Lagos. He not only in his time as two-term governor devised means of raising the economic profile of Lagos and deployed such to set the pace for a new Lagos, he evinced himself as a great leader by the quality of minds he courageously surrounded himself with, and most importantly by the quality of successor he singlehandedly chose to carry on the banner. We shall return to that shortly. It was therefore natural, like it was for Chief Obafemi Awolowo, to want to translate what he has done for his state (region) unto the larger national canvass. But again, like it was for Awolowo, the country, full of men of bile and little minds, would not be rushed out of its rottenness and ethnic quagmire.</div>

So Tinubu had to yield the presidential slot to General Buhari, a man who stands and walks tall amidst all vicious barbs directed at him. His antecedent in and out of power makes him out as a man of unequalled probity, rectitude, indefatigability, forthrightness, and humility. We would again turn to Awolowo to find analogy; for here is a man who is not emptily voluble but whose unguarded forthrightness in moments requiring more circumspection becomes an albatross for his traducers to use.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
In yielding place to Buhari, Tinubu the political guru would have calculated that taking second place is a given and necessary preparatory step to the ultimate – insha Allah! But success though has many friends, draws even more enemies, even in the camp of those who had enjoyed one’s help in attaining their positions of relative power. If the ethnic card would not stop Tinubu, then the religious card should.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
We would not know by how much Tinubu’s ambition was in the mind of Obasanjo when he characteristically lent his voice to decry any thoughts of a Muslim/Muslim ticket for the president and vice-president representation, even for a party he does not de facto belong to. But the cry gained traction after that, and ready to nail Tinubu’s ambition for the VP route to Presidency.</div>

Unfortunately, that religious wall set to debar a Tinubu would also necessarily block the way to all others who belonged to the Muslim faith, no matter how light he or she is in practice.</div>

The choice of who to become the VP nevertheless still rested on Tinubu, for fair is fair, he is the equal if not the larger leader of the party.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

The political considerations were clear: The entire (close to 90 per cent of) old Eastern Region (comprising present day South-East and South-South zones minus Edo State) is sold on Jonathan, warts and all. And choosing someone from that region, no matter his/her individual merit, would be of little or no electoral value. Equally, with the old Western Region area largely bent on an alternative to PDP and its long mess up of the country, it is assumed that the area’s vote is given even if the VP slot goes elsewhere, provided to someone of merit. Who then is to be VP?</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here comes Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, Tinubu’s successor as the governor of Lagos State. From sounding public opinion, one person emerges as the most popular choice of VP if it were to come from the West and regardless of religious tag baggage. And the winner is Governor Fashola. Amongst the Igbos and amongst the “Northerners”, from the elite to the grassroots, many were ready to overlook the Muslim/Muslim bogey for Fashola. That is the extent of how much what Fashola has done to and for Lagos is seen and appreciated all over the country.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
But Tinubu would not take a chance on Fashola. If he Tinubu would not get the ticket on account of his being a Muslim, then neither would anyone else who is a Muslim, Fashola or not. Moreover, Fashola’s image had begun to grow out of being a “Tinubu’s boy” to that of an intellectual and independent mind, a clash first brought to the fore at the time of Tinubu unsuccessfully wanting to deny Fashola a second term, and more recently in the choice of who would succeed Fashola next year.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Again, here comes Tinubu as a master in the prescience of selecting eminent hands. After in his mind ruling out, for personal or other reasons, all those who were in the forefront of being picked, such as Kayode Fayemi, Rotimi Amaechi, Adams Oshiomhole, etc, Tinubu dug into his magic box to come up with someone no one, not even the person himself, could have contemplated. He picked Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
For now, just as it was when Fashola was first picked upon by Tinubu as his successor governor, it is “Osinbajo who?” on the lips of all. He is a man without any national political visibility or vaunting political ambition, yet a man of impeccable character and integrity; an intellectual and technocrat of international repute, and someone the country would be glad they had as Buhari’s vice and as a stand-in when necessary; someone devoid of meanness and ethnic prejudices. At least someone the country could for a change be proud to show off on the international stage, talking extempore or prepared, but with eloquence and intellect.</div>

After a relative peace in the Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), indications emerged, during the week, that all is not well with the opposition party as close party sources feared that the peace being enjoyed is of the graveyard and may portend danger in the 2015 general elections if not addressed by the leadership.</div>

<i>Saturday Mirror</i> authoritative sources revealed that the latest crisis rocking the party was not unconnected with the alleged plot by the PDP national executive to impose former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Dimeji Bankole, as the consensus candidate of the party for the 2015 govenorship election.</div>

This is coming after the December 8 governorship primary where former General Manager of Gateway Holdings and the 2011 governorship candidate of Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN), Gboyega Nasir Isiaka, emerged the party’s flag bearer.</div>

But in a dramatic twist, a directive from PDP national secretariat ordered that the primary be cancelled claiming that the exercise did not follow due process.</div>

But the party’s state chairman, Engr. Adebayo Dayo, in an exclusive interview with <i>Saturday Mirror </i>on Thursday, debunked the claim saying the primary conducted under his chairmanship followed due process.</div>

Expressing his frustration at the turn of events in the state, Dayo disclosed to our reporter that the PDP at the state level had done the needful as far as the primary election was concerned before the PDP at the centre thought otherwise.</div>

‘When I attended National Working Committee (NWC) last month, I was given the guidelines guiding the primary. I’ve also done all I needed to do, signed all the papers preparatory to the primary election.’</div>

Continuing, the PDP chieftain said: ‘I have washed my hands clean, I have said all I have to say after all, I am supposed to be an umpire; I don’t have a vote but I believe the matter is in the hands of PDP National secretariat.”</div>

In a veiled reference to the alleged plot to foist the former Speaker on the party, Dayo, who had vehemently opposed the move told our reporter: “Our national chairman is a law abiding citizen who would not want to do anything contrary to the will of the people but if anybody thinks that Abuja can put somebody down, he should put it into writing because he is our leader.”</div>

Further checks have revealed that the entry of Bankole from Ogun Central into the governorship race is now tearing the party apart, threatening the fragile peace that is reigning between the people of Ogun West and Ogun Central Senatorial District.</div>

Indications to this emerged last Monday as prominent leaders of Ogun West Senatorial District stormed Abeokuta, the state capital with different placards to protest the alleged plan by the leadership of the party in Abuja to withdraw the governorship ticket earlier won by their son, Gboyega Isiaka, and impose Bankole who they alleged did not participate in the primary.</div>

A heavy container fell on a car carrying a family of five, squashing half of the vehicle. The accident happened on December 19, 2014, Friday, along Ikorodu Road, Lagos.</div>

A twitter user who was at the scene of the accident shared the photos. Witnesses also confirmed that everyone in the car survived. Their survival and how it happened remain a mystery or rather it's a miracle.</div>
