<b>There was confusion in Idi Iroko, Mushin area of Lagos over the weekend as two persons were allegedly killed and 14 others sustained varied degrees of injuries when some hoodlums went on rampage in the area.</b></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Trouble started when a notorious kingpin in the area incited some hoodlums against the residents due to ₦1 million he allegedly paid over a land.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Report says one Eniba was shot dead while another unidentified victim was also killed during the ensuing fracas.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The hoodlums took advantage of the situation to break into houses, loot shops and attack residents of the area, while they were seen publicly brandishing weapons such as cutlasses, sticks and guns.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to a resident of the area, Mrs. Oladapo, the victims were killed during a gun duel with the hoodlums.</div>

She affirmed: “The unfortunate thing is that while the crisis was ongoing, they looted shops, broke into houses and even molested residents. It was a scary experience. Government should do something quickly. Violence here is becoming a recurring decimal.”</div>

Efforts to restore normalcy in the area by Police officers from the Alakara Division however failed.</div>

While confirming the incident, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer said, “Nobody was killed. Two suspects were rather arrested in connection with the skirmish. Normalcy has been restored to the area.”</div>

<b>The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has warned Lagosians against voting the Peoples Democratic Party in the forthcoming elections, saying doing so would turn the state into “a theatre of unending war and violence.”</b></div>

The opposition party, which accused President Goodluck Jonathan of courting “violent militia groups” in his bid to win the polls, said Lagosians needed to be alerted to the grand orchestrated plan by the PDP to provoke violence in Lagos State, where “peace has endured for years.”</div>

The APC, in a statement by its Lagos State Publicity Secretary, Joe Igbokwe, said the recent rally by members of the Oodua Peoples Congress with attendant vandalism of APC campaign posters and billboards, signaled a return to the days of insecurity in the state, should PDP be voted in on March 28 and April 11 general elections.</div>

The same way and manner was also adopted by the PDP to train and sponsor hoodlums for electoral violence in the North and they were soon to become Boko Haram militants, as revealed by the late former National Security Adviser, Gen. <b>Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of Kano State, yesterday predicted that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, General Muhammadu Buhari, would get 90% of votes cast in Kano State during this Saturday’s presidential election.</b></div>

Kwankwaso stated this when the wife of the APC presidential candidate, Aishatu Buhari paid him a courtesy visit at the government house in Kano.</div>

The governor pointed out that the state has always been pro-Buhari, adding that the people are determined to vote only for APC in the elections.</div>

<b>My friend used to tell me about a guy who went on to become a Governor of one of the South West states in the 1999 election. Before he got the Alliance for Democracy (AD) ticket to run as governor, he used to regularly visit their house. My friend says there was never a time he had a meal without decorating his <i>agbada</i> with some of the stew. And then when it was time for him to leave, they would have to help his exit by pushing his car to start.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Such was the speed with which General Abdulsalami Abubakar found and relinquished power that many people perhaps did not believe that democracy was going to return. As Bertrand Russell famously put it - the intelligent are full of doubt while the stupid are cocksure. Nigeria was there for the taking and some of our brightest minds decided to adopt a <i>siddon</i> look approach. In effect, our ‘second eleven’ went out to represent us.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
We are still feeling the effects of 1999 in our democracy today. The immediate aftermath made it painfully obvious - a speaker of the House turned out to have fake certificates. A senate president was alleged to have a criminal record, which he blamed on his mysterious twin brother. One southwest governor never spent a weekend in his state (he was always to be found in a Lagos nightclub instead). Another northwest governor spent at least half of his first term out of the country chasing ‘foreign investors’ for investments, which never materialised. Some northern governors declared sharia to be the solution of all the problems in their states and went after implementing it with a conviction and fervency rarely seen in Nigerian politicians. I remember a former governor who is now in jail in London advertising at the time that he would deliver '100 computers to 100 schools in 100 days' all the while failing to tell the people he had a criminal record for petty theft.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
People only needed to be in the right place at the right time to get elected. In the southwest, you only needed to wear a certain type of glasses and a certain type of hat and flash the victory sign in your campaign poster and you were home and dry.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is the untold story of our 16-year-old democracy. The best of us ceded the stage for chancers, fraudsters and happy go lucky people. The effect has been so great that no matter what we do in 2015, it will simply be the start of the repair process. No miracles will be possible. We were under 5,000MW of electricity in 1999 and the story remains the same till today, at the cost of so many lives and untold suffering.</div>

But history is not destiny.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If we made mistakes back then, it only becomes unforgivable if we make the same mistake this time around again. The sin of 1999 was not so much that we elected people who turned out to be bad leaders – Shakespeare said there’s no art to find the mind’s construction in the face. Voters will always get it wrong now and again. The real sin was not caring enough. A citizenry that was a bit more engaged with the process could have restrained even bad leaders.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you have a Permanent Voters Card, it would be almost criminal not to use it thoughtfully on March 28th and April 11th. I won't be voting but if I were, I’d be voting for the Buhari/Osinbajo ticket. I think that they are fine men whatever the shortcomings of the APC as a party. But more importantly, it will signal that we as a people want to move in a different direction if we vote them.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
But you do not have to agree with me. I only ask that you use your PVC and use it wisely. I've been moved by the amount of effort people have made to get their PVCs - a friend of mine visited his polling unit more than 10 times before he got his own. I’m cautiously optimistic about this. By being so engaged with the process, the space for elected officials to misbehave is reduced.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Please go out on Election Day armed with your PVC. Democracy is now here to stay. It is time to stay engaged and begin the long and hard work of making it work much better than it has done so far for us as a nation.</div>

Let’s start fixing the mistakes of the past as shareholders of the going concern that is Nigeria.</div>

<b>A Federal High Court in Lagos has ruled that the Nigerian Armed Forces have no role in the conduct of elections in the country.</b></div>

The court relied on a recent Court of Appeal ruling that barred the use of soldiers in the conduct of elections, stating that it was a violation of Section 217(2)(c) of the Constitution and Section 1 of the Armed Forces Act.</div>

The appellate court had also relied on a judgment by a Federal High Court in Sokoto last January also barring the use of armed forces in the conduct of elections.</div>

The latest ruling says the Nigerian government should not deploy soldiers at polling units, a plan that had generated controversy between the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC.</div>

<b>Elections are likely to be inconclusive in the Southwest, the All Progressives Congress (APC) warned yesterday.</b></div>

The party spoke of a plan by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and President Goodluck Jonathan’s supporters to make Saturday’s  elections inconclusive, having realised that they cannot deliver the zone to the PDP as they have promised.</div>

In a statement issued yesterday in Lagos by the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the plot was conceived at a meeting held in the Ondo State Government House on March 13.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) is said to be part of the plot in which youths have been armed with guns and other weapons. The youths, said APC, will be given military and police uniforms, "which we earlier said were being sewn in the capital of a state in the Southwest".</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The APC said the highly-disruptive and armed protest by the OPC in Lagos on March 16 was a dress rehearsal for the plan to be executed across the states in the Southwest.</div>

The party also said the PDP had compiled for the Police anti-cult squad names of APC youths in all the Wards in Ondo State so they can be arrested and locked up before, during and after the elections, to give the PDP and its cohorts the free rein to carry out their nefarious activities.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
"As a matter of fact, funds have been provided to the Police Anti-Cult Squad to expand its detention facility, and work is going on at the facility as we write. The reason for these actions is that, despite the massive infusion of illicit funds to bribe individuals and groups in the Southwest, the PDP and its agents in the region have realised that their strategy has backfired and even given the people more impetus to vote against the ruling party", it said.</div>

APC called on the security agencies, especially the police and the State Security Service, to shun partisanship in carrying out their assigned responsibilities to prevent any individual or group from disrupting the elections, irrespective of their political leanings.</div>

"Let’s be clear: In the event that the security agencies fail to carry out their duties, we will hold them, as well as those behind the plot to disrupt the elections, totally responsible for any disruption in the polls. They will also be held responsible for any act of violence or intimidation against the opposition," the party warned.</div>

It appealed to its members and supporters across the Southwest to be calm but vigilant, and to document all actions aimed at harassing and intimidating them, as well as all acts of violence and all moves to disrupt the polls in the geo-political zone.</div>

"The forthcoming elections are being closely watched within and outside Nigeria. In other words, the eyes of the world are on our country. An eyewitness said but for the intervention of soldiers from Dodan Barracks, the injured would have been more and that people would have been killed immediately. Four people - Babangida Bello shot in the leg; Gambo Idi shot close to the eye; Ibrahim Musa and Jubril Ishaku whose ankles were shattered - were last night being treated at the Island Maternity Hospital (IMH), Lagos.</div>

The fifth person, whose injury is critical, was referred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Idi Araba for further care.</div>

According to an eye witness, the thugs chased after APC members who began their rally close to the State House en-route Obalende. But as the thugs advanced behind them, they scurried into Dodan Barracks and Ikoyi Cemetery for safety.</div>

Some of those shot were not even part of the rally.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Recounting his ordeal, Bello, who resides at 32 Ajeniya Street, said: “I was sitting in from of the mosque when I saw the thugs. They were many and armed with guns and machetes. They approached me without saying a word and shot me in the chest and leg. They also shot some other people.”</div>

Bello, who was writhing in pain, said some people also sustained minor injuries while running from the attackers.</div>

APC member, Alhaja Rikiya Jubril, said their rally was peaceful and orderly until they approached Obalende via Ajeniya and Suya Junction when news reached them that some thugs were advancing to the area to unleash terror.</div>

“Most of us scampered for our dear lives. I, along with some women, ran into the barracks while some of our members took solace in the cemetery. It was a frightening sight. This must stop before Saturday,” she said.</div>

Mrs Jubril said the incident happened at about 6pm. “It was soldiers that saved us. I had to beg a woman for clothes in the middle of the stampede.”</div>

She said the thugs shot at APC members who were at the Obalende Office. “Many of those who got injured were those sitting in the front of the mosque,” she added.</div>

Adamawa Youth Leader of APC in Lagos, Alhaji Zakari Mohammed, said the casualty would have been more but for two police men from MOPOL 2 who told them not to go to Obalende and the intervention of some soldiers from Dodan Barracks.</div>

“Some PDP thugs came in buses and were removing banners. We asked them not to remove our candidates’ banners. The next thing they did was to bring out their guns and machetes and started attacking people. Many people were injured,” he said.</div>

He said: “Because the place is close to Dodan Barrack the soldiers came in. The soldiers were forced to return fire which forced them to disperse.</div>

He said the soldiers recovered a bus loaded with arms which they pushed into the barracks.</div>

<b>The Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi, has said the reasons adduced by his deputy, Tele Ikuru, for resigning from the All Progressives Congress, APC, were shocking to him.</b></div>

He stated this via a statement by his Commissioner for Information and Communication, Ibim Semenitari, on Sunday.</div>

Mr. Ikuru resigned from the APC and immediately canvassed support for the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Nyesom Wike. He followed Mr. Amaechi to the APC after the latter and four other governors dumped the PDP for the opposition party in 2013.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mr. Ikuru, who was deputy governor to Mr. Amaechi’s predecessor, Celestine Omehia, retained his position after Mr. Amaechi assumed office in October 2007 following Mr. Omehia’s sack by the Court of Appeal.</div>

Ms. Semenitari’s statement said the governor received the news of Mr. Ikuru’s resignation from the APC on Sunday evening. It stated that the news remained unofficial as the deputy governor was yet to notify the governor of his move. It, however, said the governor wished him the best in his future political endeavours.</div>

“He however wishes to note that the reasons adduced by Engineer Ikuru are shocking as Deputy Governor lkuru has consistently been the one driving political activities in his local government area of Andoni. He has also been the second in command driving politics and governance in Rivers State,” the statement said.</div>

It also said the governor had hoped that “the numerous rumours of Engineer Ikuru’s double-faced membership of the APC and open romance with the PDP were not true, he however appreciates the fact that every individual has a right to pursue his political dreams, as he deems most appropriate.”</div>

The statement further stated that it was regrettable that Mr. Ikuru chose the path of bare faced lies and name calling rather than the path of simply retracing his steps to where he has always been.</div>

<b>The Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Tele Ikuru, has given reasons for dumping the All Progressives Congress to re-join the Peoples Democratic Party, saying the APC is of rebels, insurgents and anarchists.</b></div>

It was earlier reported that Mr. Ikulu’s decision to return to the PDP in a move that is considered a betrayal of his boss and friend, Governor Rotimi Amaechi.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mr. Ikuru, who was one of Governor Amaechi’s major ally, is said to have announced his defection in Port Harcourt, the state capital on Sunday.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The decampee was first elected deputy governor to Celestine Omehia in 2007, before the duo was removed by the Supreme Court less than six months in office. When Mr. Amaechi was sworn in as governor, he retained Mr. Ikuru as his deputy and the duo fought against the interests and allies of the former governor of the state, Peter Odili.</div>

At the time Mr. Amaechi fell out with the leadership of the PDP and defected to the APC with majority of his aides, Mr. Ikuru remained loyal to the governor and fought on the same side.</div>

But in his formal defection statement titled, “A Call on the Conscience of the People of Rivers State,” Mr. Ikulu said he is compeled to address the people out of the fullness of heart.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Recalling events in December 2013, he said he, alongside other disillusioned people of the state, joined the APC out of extreme loyalty to his friend and boss, Mr. Amaechi.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Ever since, as the true nature and motives of APC are unveiled, I have continued to twist and turn in extreme mental and emotional agony. The more I struggle to belong, the more the Rivers man in me rejects the APC,” Mr. Ikuru said.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
“After carefully studying, interacting and analyzing the leadership of the party, I have come to the sad conclusion that the APC is a party of rebels, insurgents and anarchists, clothed in robes of pretense and deceit. APC is a party founded on deception and it thrives on unholy propaganda and falsehood.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Based on these, Mr. Ikuru said he and his supporters have decided to denounce the APC and have jointly and severally resigned their membership of the party.</div>

“My dear people of Rivers State,” the deputy governor continued,  “we of this generation will not in good conscience expect forgiveness and compassion from our forebears, posterity, and the spirit of our unborn generations if it is recorded in the annals of history that after 48 years of Rivers people supporting leaders from all other parts of this country with our votes and resources, we were the same that witch hunted and hounded down the very first ever President from this region, granted us by providence. I wash my hands off this treachery.”</div>

He, therefore, urged his supporters and the people of the state to vote for President Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP gubernatorial candidate in the state, Nyesom Wike.</div>

But in a swift response, Mr. Amaechi said he only received news of his deputy’s resignation from the APC on Sunday evening.</div>

Mr. Amaechi, who spoke through the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Ibim Semenitari, said Mr. Ikuru’s resignation remains unofficial since he is yet to notify his principal of the move.</div>

<b>The Ondo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, (APC) has said that the people of the state would expresss their anger on President Goodluck Jonathan in the Saturday presidential election by voting against his re-election.</b></div>

The party said Governor Olusegun Mimiko’s claim that the people of the state preferred Jonathan to its candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, was a self-deceit.</div>

It challenged Mimiko to point to a single federal project or intervention executed by the Jonathan government in Ondo state to show the president’s commitment to the people of the state.</div>

A statement by Vice Chairman, APC Publicity Committee, Kunle Adebayo said instead of good life, the citizenry had suffered failed promises, poverty and gloom like other Nigerians under the PDP government.</div>

Adebayo noted that the failure of the PDP government to touch their lives accounted for the reason people had turned to the APC and Buhari to seek redemption.</div>
