<b>ABEOKUTA, NIGERIA - The Ogun State Government has fired at least six officials of its Ministry of Education over an "offensive" Senior School English Language summary passage which formed part of questions set by an examiner.</b></div>

An examiner, Adegbenro Joel, was alleged to have prepared the English Language exams questions for the third term academic session of the State Unified Examination in public secondary schools.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

The exam had a summary passage that took a critical look at the alleged negligence of education by government.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The controversial summary passage read: </div>

There is no arguing about the fact that the government is merely paying lip service to the development of education. It is true that a lot of money is being spent on education sector but, with little or no impact felt by the people, except where we want to deceive ourselves. </div>

Many schools run by the government which were formally known for academic excellence have suddenly lost their prestige and are living on past glory. No wonder many parents and guardians are threateningly left with only one option, to withdraw their wards from these schools to other ones that are better managed.</div>

Governor Ibikunle Amosun reportedly got infuriated after his attention was called to the passage, and allegedly ordered the sacking of the officials of the ministry directly in charge of that examination.</div>

Reliable government sources said those fired over the development include an acting Permanent Secretary, Folashade Oresegun; three Directors including, Ganiyu Odunsi, and a Deputy Director, curriculum and evaluation, simply identified as Mr. Majekodunmi.</div>

The examiner, who is a teacher at Mayflower School, was also sacked, our sources said.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Other sources said the dismissal of Messrs Oresegun and Odunsi was later converted to compulsory retirement while the four other affected officials remain dismissed.</div>

When contacted, the Secretary to the State Government, Taiwo Adeoluwa, said he was not competent to comment on the matter.</div>

He said: "the issue is a civil service matter, the best person to comment is the state Head of Service. Please call Head of Service".</div>

But when contacted, the Head of Service, Modupe Adekunle, said: </div>

When the issue came up, the state government put in the necessary process, a panel was set up to investigate and based on their recommendations, the civil service commission has to decide. It is a decision that has been related to the affected officers. </div>

The normal process was that a panel was set up, the report forwarded to the Civil Service Commission for the civil servants, the Teaching Service Commission, for the teachers. </div>

<b>EDE, NIGERIA - The management of Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State, has offered to give a scholarship to the 18-year-old admission seeker allegedly raped by a part-time lecturer of the University of Lagos, Mr. Akin Baruwa.</b></div>

The institution became concerned about <a href="http://nigerianewsroom.blogspot.com/2015/08/read-how-and-why-unilag-lecturer-raped.html">the fate of the girl following series of PUNCH reports detailing the girl's experience</a>.</div>

<b><a href="http://www.punchng.com/feature/super-saturday-crime/adeleke-university-offers-rape-victim-scholarship/">The PUNCH</a></b> correspondent contacted the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Oluwole Amusan, who confirmed this on Wednesday.</div>

The university don explained that the institution decided to take the step because the management was moved by the plight of the girl, who was allegedly raped in the course of her quest for a university education.</div>

The VC said: "Giving out scholarships to indigent students is not new to us. Our founder had a foundation whose existence preceded the university, through which scholarships were given to students.</div>

"Since the university was established four years ago, the tradition has continued."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to the VC, the scholarship would cover the four-year duration of Mass Communication, which the girl has chosen to study, a course which <a href="http://nigerianewsroom.blogspot.com/2015/08/randy-lecturer-who-raped-admission.html">UNILAG has said she was not qualified for with her 211 score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination</a>.</div>

He said it has not been determined whether the scholarship would be full or partial since he had not yet interacted with the father of the victim.</div>

The father of the alleged rape victim, told <i>The Punch</i> correspondent that he had been contacted by the institution to come to the university.</div>

Baruwa allegedly raped the young girl (name withheld), who is seeking admission to the university, in his office on July 23, 2015.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The lecturer, currently in detention at the Kirikiri Prison, was arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, on Thursday.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
But speaking with <b><a href="http://www.punchng.com/news/unilag-disowns-lecturer-who-raped-admission-seeker/">The PUNCH</a></b> correspondent on Sunday, the Head, Information Unit of the university, Mr. Olagoke Oke, said Baruwa was not an employee of the institution.</div>

According to him, no such name exists on the university’s employee list whether teaching or non-teaching.</div>

The said Dr. Baruwa is a not a member of staff of the university, whether teaching or non-teaching. He also does not belong to the part-time or full-time teaching staff of the school. His name is not on the master list of workers of the university. I have checked the staff list using his full name and initials and could not come up with any such name as of Friday, August 6, 2015. </div>

I have also checked the list of office accommodation given to members of staff of the university and his name is not there. There is no office allocation attached to such a name. How he reportedly entered the said office where the crime took place is what we are looking into as an institution. </div>

While we sympathise with the alleged victim, we are ready to cooperate with every agency of government to get to the root of the matter as soon as possible. As an institution, we do not support any act of violence, not even against women. Therefore, we will help to ensure that the case comes to a logical conclusion.</div>

Meanwhile, as the authorities disowned the lecturer, some students, in the Faculty of Business Administration, who craved anonymity for fear of victimisation, claimed that the suspect was a part-time lecturer of the accounting department of the university.</div>

One of them said: "I know him as a part-time lecturer in the accounting department. I wonder what the university wants to achieve now by trying to disown him."</div>

Nigerian Student Breaks 50-Year-Old GPA Record In Japanese University

<b>Ufot Ekong, a Nigerian student who studied Robotics and Electrical Engineering at Tokai University, Tokyo, Japan emerged the best all round graduating student of the institution this session. He graduated with First Class Honours.</b></div>

Mr. Ufot Ekong, a multi-talented Nigerian youth, has artistry in music, specialising in Saxophone. He distinguished himself from the outset in the school when he won the Japanese language best student award.</div>

The self-sponsored student, who combined two jobs with studies, won many other awards in the University, altogether numbering about six.</div>

Ufot, who lived in Lagos while in Nigeria, is a Saxophone master and the director of Strictly African Japan, an African retail wears and accessories shop.</div>

Aside from paying himself through school, Ufot who is now doing his PhD, works at Nissan, has two patented products. For his project, he made an electric car that goes as fast as 128 kilometres per hour.</div>

The car drives on charged batteries. He plans to drive it May 29, in Abuja, Nigeria to celebrate Buhari's inauguration.</div>

He speaks English, Yoruba, French and Japanese. It is no overstatement to say Ufot Ekong is destined for greatness.</div>
