Mr. Buhari and his counterpart in the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, President Goodluck Jonathan, both front-runners in the February 14 presidential election, were invited by the organisation to speak on Nigeria’s future.</div>

However, media reports had erroneously suggested that Mr. Buhari, who had planned to make the trip on Saturday, ahead of the event, scheduled for January 26, was travelling to the US on medical grounds.</div>

In an earlier inquiry, the organisation had said the APC presidential candidate was invited to its Washington headquarters "to give a major public address on Nigeria’s future as it stands on the edge of a pivotal national election."</div>

Ms. Cooke, in her response to the enquiry on Friday, said the cancellation of the trip was due to "a change in his (Buhari) schedule."</div>

"First, I want to make you aware that, because of a change in his schedule, Gen Buhari will not be travelling to the United States, and the event on Monday has been cancelled," she said.</div>

If he obtained his masters in Hydrobiology, then that is where Professor Powell supervised him.</div>

In a statement in Lagos, Friday, by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party wondered why Gov. Fayose will schedule a rally also for Saturday at Fajuyi Park, which is a major route to the venue of the APC presidential campaign rally.</div>

"This is nothing but a deliberate act of provocation, and it is a dangerous game by a Governor who has now become notorious for making incendiary statements and taking irrational actions. Gov. Fayose should be told in clear terms that being the Governor of a state demands huge responsibility, not brazen rascality," it said.</div>

APC wondered what point the Governor was trying to prove by seeking to set the supporters of his party, the PDP, against those of our party, which is basically what he is planning to do by organizing a parallel rally along a major route to ours at Ado-Ekiti on Saturday.</div>

The party said its members and supporters, in line with their peaceful nature and the ethos of APC, neither disrupted nor interfered with the PDP presidential campaign rally at Ado, and finds it difficult to understand why the Governor will be plotting to trigger chaos and disrupt the APC presidential campaign rally.</div>

Of course, it should not be interpreted as if one does not want Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to be the next president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria but what the hell was he doing in my dream smiling so broadly as he acknowledged shouts of ‘congratulations’ from a horde of adoring supporters? The man can hardly manage a smile in real life and neither is he the candidate one would ordinarily be rooting for. However, a warning would seem to have come from the unknown: ‘Do not bet your house against Buhari becoming (the next) president unless you are equally prepared to be homeless!”</div>

The above extracts are from an article I wrote (title retained) in the run-up to the 2011 presidential election, having dreamt that Maj. Gen Muhammadu Buhari won the election. Of course, he did not but, who knows, it could have been a distant event that one had foreseen!</div>

In trying to rationalise the circumstances that could have made it a dream-come-true for Buhari, I examined the controversy that surrounded the candidacy of President Goodluck Jonathan over the zoning philosophy of his party, the Peoples Democratic Party. That controversy, more or less, pitted the northern leadership against him. I also examined the possibility that the then so-called progressive parties might actually co-operate among themselves in order to counterbalance the influence and power of the PDP. An attempt made in that direction did not succeed.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Quite a lot has changed since 2011 and the aforementioned factors, more than ever before, will have implications for the direction of the Presidency come February 14.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Firstly, the once splinter progressive parties have coalesced into the All Progressives Congress, thanks to the centralising influence of the institution of the Presidency. The February presidential election will be fought in what is a two-party competition between the PDP and the APC. Buhari could be the beneficiary of this new development, as he now competes for the Presidency under the platform of a political party which, unlike his defunct Congress for Political Change, enjoys nationwide support.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Secondly, the February elections will reveal the extent to which the intra-party crisis in the PDP – a crisis which led to the defection of five of its governors to the rival APC – has resulted into the loss or gain of popular support in the various constituencies. I have attempted to explain the causes of the crisis in the PDP by three factors: “One, a frosty relationship between President Goodluck Jonathan and Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State; two, an allegation of arbitrariness on the part of the immediate past PDP national chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur; and three, the perceived ambition of President Jonathan to seek re-election in 2015 in contradiction of a supposed agreement that he would not be doing so.” (see my book, Party Coalitions in Nigeria (2014), pp. 129-130).</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Cleavage, be it of ethnicity or religion, is the worst of political problems. You hardly can resolve the problem of cleavage by preaching to people to forget about those things they hold very dear to their hearts. There are not a few in the North who feel the South had dominated the Presidency for the greater part of the current Republic; they will grab the opportunity provided by the candidacy of Muhammadu Buhari in ensuring that the pendulum of political power swings back to their region.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Finally, Buhari faces an incumbent President, Goodluck Jonathan, who may be having problems with economic and security issues. Allegations of escalating official corruption and Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East may have overshadowed the modest achievements of Jonathan. Of course, diverse sentiments will compete and contend in the 2015 election, but there are not a few who would want to reward or punish him on their perception of his stewardship during the past four years. Buhari, himself a former leader, has his own “baggages” but he enjoys the perception of being one disciplined individual who passionately resents corruption. Corruption has been that most deadly virus afflicting the Nigerian state.</div>

There is hardly any doubt that the days ahead will be quite interesting. What we must continue to do is to educate our people about the ramifications of democracy as a game where the minority must have its say while the majority has its way. Why, for instance, would you want to throw the nation into chaos just because someone has lost an election, even when another member of your ethnic or religious constituency could be a beneficiary in the near future? Why would you want the stigma of “intolerant democrats” stamped permanently on you and your people? Our nation must unite behind whoever wins the February presidential election.</div>

<b>The dates for the general election in February may be hanging in the balance as the nation’s national security adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), has called for postponement to give the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) more time to distribute about 30 million permanent voter cards (PVCs) to eligible voters.</b></div>

But, INEC has declared that there was no operational reason, including the concerns over the distribution of the PVCs, to postpone next month’s general election.</div>

Dasuki spoke yesterday during a talk show at Chatham House, the London think-tank group.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to <b>Reuters</b>, the NSA said he had discussed the matter with the INEC chairman, Prof Attahiru Jega, adding that a delay within the time allowed by the law will not be a bad idea.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"That is what we are encouraging at the moment", he said, noting that INEC had been able to distribute 30 million PVCs but had an outstanding 30 million others to hand out.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He further said that although INEC had assured him it would achieve the task in time for the February elections, he thought it would make more sense to take more time. According to him, there is a 90-day window during which the election can legally take place.</div>

Dasuki was said to have told Jega: "It costs you nothing, it’s still within the law", adding that it was for INEC and not him to decide on the matter. "What sense does it make to vote three months early when there are 30 million cards still with INEC? That’s my position".</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, INEC has said there is no basis to postpone the election, reports <b><a href="http://leadership.ng/news/406020/february-polls-inec">LEADERSHIP</a></b> newspaper.</div>

The commission further added that there was no communication from the presidency to postpone the election over complaints of the PVCs distribution.</div>

The chief press secretary to the INEC chairman, Kayode Idowu, said: "We have not received any official or unofficial communication to that effect. From the point of our operation, the commission has not seen any good basis to postpone the election."</div>

Kayode, however, pointed out that information available to the commission with regards to what transpired at the London meeting was contrary to what the NSA was quoted to have said.</div>

He stated that the claims that 30 million uncollected PVCs were not true, noting that there has been accelerated distribution and collection of cards since the decentralisation of the process.</div>

According to him, rough estimates indicate that the collection process has surpassed 70 percent since the decentralisation of the distribution of the cards at the ward level.</div>

Kayode said: "Where are the 30 million cards that have not been collected? Statistics are cold; they are not flighty. By the commission’s rough estimation, even though we have not collected the raw data from the states, we have cases of over 26,000 PVCs collected in states in a space of three days, and this could be the trend across the country.</div>

"I can assure you that the percentage is much higher than 70 percent.</div>

<b>The National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief Lai Muhammed has described the statement by Femi Fani-Kayode that Gen. Muhammadu Buhari should be stripped off his military status and privileges for joining the army with fake result as laughable.</b></div>

Fani-Kayode had during a press conference said Buhari should also be disqualified from the forthcoming presidential election over inability to present his original credentials.</div>

Reacting to Fani-Kayode's assertion while speaking as a guest on <b>Channels TV</b>’s <i><b>Sunrise Daily</b></i>, the APC’s spokesman explained that after Buhari was overthrown in 1985, his house was ransacked and most of his documents were either stolen or burnt.</div>

According to him, upon his (Buhari) return from exile, he sworn an affidavit to show that his results were missing, <b>Daily Post</b> reports.</div>

"This happened long ago. He was a former Head of State and I don’t think he's going to look for job anywhere where they would ask him to bring his original credentials. He swore an affidavit and he tendered it when he contested for the presidency in 2003, 2007 and 2011 respectively. So what is the noise about Buhari's credentials?</div>

"I also graduated from secondary school over 53 years ago and I don't think I can find my WASC result at the moment. I think Buhari should be pardoned if he cannot produce his certificates."</div>

When reminded that the Electoral Act was amended in 2010, Muhammed responded that Buhari used same affidavit to contest in 2011 without this controversy.</div>

The principal was summoned by his employers, the Katsina State Ministry of Education, in connection with the release of the results, sources close to Mallam Bello said last night.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The embattled principal was said to have explained that he needed to defend the integrity of the college (formerly Provincial Secondary School, Katsina) and not Gen. Buhari.</div>

Bello made distress calls to his friends and relatives, <b><a href="http://thenationonlineng.net/new/principal-gets-death-threats-releasing-buharis-results/">The Nation</a></b> learnt.</div>

One source said: <i>"Some forces were unhappy with the issuance of results to Gen. Buhari and they have been threatening the principal. They have been calling him names, abusing him. Some were actually threatening to deal with him.</i></div>

<i>"They told the principal that he ought to have left Buhari to his fate instead of releasing his results.</i></div>

<i>"Faced with pressure, the principal has reached out to friends and relatives on the threats. He explained that he did so to protect the integrity of the college and not anybody’s.</i></div>

But another source said the Katsina State Government actually consented to the release of the results by the Ministry of Education in view of the sensitive nature of the issue at hand.</div>

A government source said: "Since the WASC results of Buhari had become political, the position of the government was that the principal ought to have cleared the air after all Buhari is a citizen of the state."</div>
