Vincent Enyeama has quenched all doubts on his feelings on the 2014 GLO-CAF African Footballer of the Year award, stating that he does feel bad not winning the gong.
Manchester City and Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Toure was crowned the African football king at the GLO-CAF Awards ceremony on Thursday in Lagos, beating Enyeama and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the process.
Enyeama, while answering questions after the awards ceremony, had expressed satisfaction at Toure’s crowning.
“I am not a bitter loser, but a big congratulation to Yaya. I respect him,” the Nigeria captain said at the press conference that followed the awards ceremony at the Eko Hotel and Suites.
The Lille of France goalkeeper arrived at the conference midway into the session and went straight to Toure, now four-time winner of the award, hugged him and said, “keep winning.”
As he made to settle in his chair, a journalist, by the side, asked him why he was just coming, he replied that he initially did not know that such a conference was holding.
Asked if Nigeria’s non-qualification for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations could have been responsible for the miss, Enyeama said he didn’t believe that, that could have contributed to it.
“On qualifying or not qualifying, it pains me that Nigeria is not going to be at the Nations Cup. For the award, I support the decision of tonight. A big congratulation to him (Toure) and I thank God for him,” Enyeama said.
While also speaking, president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Amaju Pinnick praised the Super Eagles goalkeeper to high heavens.
“He has shown a lot of great dexterity, a lot of leadership and he has been a super ambassador, so we are still very, very proud of him,” Pinnick said.
