A female police corporal, Funmilayo Balogun, has been arrested for stealing a Honda Accord car valued at ₦5 million, which she sold to an unsuspecting client.

Ms. Balogun, 35, was paraded on Wednesday by the Ogun State Police Command. She was wearing a police uniform with the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police.

It was learnt that the suspect was dismissed from the Force in 2010 for presenting fake academic certificates to get employment into the police force.

After her dismissal, she allegedly promoted herself to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP, and allegedly started stealing cars in automobile stores across the South-Western part of the country.

She allegedly committed the offence in October 2014, when she approached a car dealer in Oke-Ilewo area of Abeokuta on the pretense that she wanted to buy the car.

Confessing to the crime at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, headquarters in Abeokuta, where she was paraded, Ms. Balogun said she wore a police uniform for the operation, adding that she told the car sellers that she needed to transfer money into their account to balance cash at hand.

According to the suspect, she drove two of the car dealers to the police headquarters at Eleweran in Abeokuta, where she abandoned them and fled with the car that she later sold to someone in Port Harcourt, Rivers State at ₦3.5 million. She said she has since been paid ₦2 million.

The police also paraded an armed robbery gang made up of seven teenagers, who were allegedly behind different robbery cases reported in the Ijebu axis of the state.

Items recovered from the suspects were two locally made pistols, mobile phones, charms and eight vehicles.

A 32-year-old man was also arrested for killing his mother at Ibefun, in Odogbolu area of the state.

The State Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye, said the command would continue to strive to rid the state of crime and criminal elements.
