<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) yesterday, reassured Nigerians that the incoming government of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will not fail them.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Buhari, who hosted a delegation from Taraba State, also said by the end of his tenure in 2019, Nigerians would be confident of a society where elections would be free, fair and credible.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Buhari’s assurance was sequel to lamentations from the governorship candidate of APC in Taraba State, Senator Aisha Alhassan, who told Buhari that she was robbed of victory at the last gubernatorial election in the State.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Alhassan’s story, however, took Buhari down memory lane as he encouraged the candidate, who had earlier informed him of her journey to the courts to challenge the outcome of the election.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He recalled that he was in courts for several years over electoral frauds to fight for his rights.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He said: “It is a battle well fought and I am very pleased that you have taken the honourable way out. According to the Nigerian constitution, you may go to court. I was there three times and ended up in the Supreme Court.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Sometimes, people wonder why I tried so hard. I tried so hard because it is a system I believe in. I believe that multi-party democratic system is the best form of governance with a big caveat that election must be free and fair.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Really, this is why I am in it. I was in APP, I joined partisan politics in April 2002 and on that date, at my ward, those who knew me, and have been following my career antecedent in the military, would not believe it that I will participate in partisan politics and I will not also believe it. But I found myself in it and I never turned back.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Within one year, APP gave me the ticket. There were governors, senators and much older people than me, but all the same, I got the ticket. I lost, I was in court for 30 months. In 2007, we tried to have a limited merger and became ANPP and again, I participated and was told I lost.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“I went to court for 20 months up to the Supreme Court and I felt that my party was not fair to me. While I was in court, the leadership of the party proceeded and took two marginal ministries in late Yar’Adua’s cabinet and an Adviser. For that disgraceful behaviour by the party leadership, I left the party and we floated the CPC.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Again, I attempted in 2011 and lost and again and I was in court for about eight months. I contested now for the fourth time under APC having successfully gone through with the merger of the three legacy parties.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“So, Aisha, don't give up. You are younger and this is your first attempt. I contested three times and this is my fourth attempt. I hope that you succeed in court. I am impressed by the quality of Taraba people you brought here.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>There is an uneasy calm in the State Security Service (SSS) over a promotion exercise conducted recently by the leadership of the Service.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
No fewer than 45 officers of the Service, including its spokesperson, Marilyn Ogar, were promoted to different grade levels during the exercise.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mrs. Ogar, a Deputy Director, who was recently fingered in a <a href="http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/179191-exclusive-sss-spokesperson-marilyn-ogar-received-bribe-before-2014-osun-election.html">bribery scam</a>, and 28 others were elevated from Grade Level 15 to 16 while 16 others moved to Grade Level 17 from 18.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The exercise, believed to have been hurriedly undertaken by the leadership of the SSS in anticipation of its exit on May 29, is embroiled in controversy as some officers, who were also due for promotion, were left out.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was gathered that some of the officers who were interviewed and were qualified for promotion were not uplifted thereby causing disaffection among the officers.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Besides, according to <b style="font-family: '';"><a href="http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/182561-uneasy-calm-in-sss-over-hurried-promotion-of-alleged-bribe-taker-marilyn-ogar-others.html">PREMIUM TIMES</a></b> sources, some state Directors, although already issued retirement letters, surprisingly benefited from the exercise.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Some of them are one Achu B, who was the Director in the Lagos office and a former Director (Technical), a Mr. Omeruyi.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Insiders say promotion exercises in the Service usually take effect from July 1 every year, but that the current one was conducted hurriedly by the leadership of the Service to reward its loyalists ahead of the May 29 handover date to a new administration.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The spokesperson of the Service, Ms. Ogar, did not answer or return calls seeking comments for this story.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Federal Government had last month directed all ministries, agencies and extra-ministerial departments to prepare their handover briefs ahead of May 29 inauguration of the incoming administration of Muhammadu Buhari.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Service Chiefs and the police were affected by the directive contained in a memo dated April 13 and signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Burundi's President Pierre Nkurunziza is running for a third term which he promises will be his last but citizens don't want to hear any of it.</b> </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There have been demonstrations in the country for almost 2 weeks now, but it turned deadly this morning after one person was shot dead by police and 3 others seriously injured. The police reportedly used live ammunition to disperse protesters, killing one. 13 people have so far died since April 26th, the day demonstrations began following Pres. Nkurunziza announcement that he would seek re-election.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The fight is happening in Burundi's capital Bujumbura between the president's supporters and people who want him out. Many protesters have also been arrested and are being held by government forces.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Burundi's constitutional court on Tuesday May 5th ruled that the president can run for a third term if he wants, that he wasn't violating the constitution's two-term limit, saying "renewal of the presidential term through direct universal suffrage" is permitted. This didn't go down well with the opponents who say it violates their constitution. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Burundi's election will hold on June 26 and citizens say they want another president. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Over 25,000 Burundians have fled the country to neigbouring countries following the violent protests. They say they are afraid there might be another civil war in the country. The last one ended in 2006 after 13 years.</div>

Plan For The Daunting Tasks Ahead, Presidency Tells APC

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs, Prof. Rufai Ahmed Alkali has chided the All Progressives Congress (APC) over its recent utterances urging the party to talk less and plan more as the nation moves towards the 29th May inauguration date.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Reacting to the alarm raised by the APC that President Jonathan is running the economy aground before handing over, Professor Alkali said "the allegation is immature, reckless and out of tune with the President’s desire and patriotic commitment to a peaceful transfer of power".</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"Nigerians will recall that shortly after the results of the Presidential elections were announced, President Goodluck Jonathan inaugurated a high powered transition committee to plan and organize a hitch free transition programme for the inauguration of the incoming administration.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Surprisingly, it took the APC more than three weeks to wake up to its responsibility to constitute its own transition committee. How then can they turn round to accuse the government of frustrating the transition programme?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"Since the setting up of the committee, the President and the entire machinery of the Federal Government have been put on the transition mode and all government officers have been giving maximum cooperation to the incoming transition committee", he noted.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He noted that "by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Jonathan remains in office up to the 29th of May 2015 when he formally hands over to the incoming President. The machinery of government cannot be put on hold or frozen because the country is in transition," he said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On the allegations that government is running the economy aground, Prof. Alkali reminded APC that "governance is a serious business. He further added that with the sudden and unexpected concession of victory to them, it appears that the APC is beginning to face the full reality of managing the great challenges of a complex nation.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"Their recent, frequent and unnecessary attacks on the President clearly shows that they are losing their nerves and are beginning to lay foundation to justify their failures in the near future and we want to remind them that Nigerians are not ready to accept any excuses for their failure. They promised to bring change so they must bring positive change to the well being of Nigerians and urgently too," he said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
