Ekiti Police Detain 2 'Mad' Rams For Attacking Grandma And Son

It was like a scene from Nollywood in the popular Okesa area of Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, when stray rams attacked a 65-year-old grandmother, identified simply as Iya Oyo and her son as they made their way to a bank in the area.

The two rams, said to be owned by the manager of a filling station located in the area, were described by residents of the neighbourhood as notorious and troublesome.

Some of the residents, who didn’t want to be named, said the rams were known to be too notorious and always ready to attack people at sight.

One of the residents said: “We have complained several times to the owner of the rams to rein in the animals but to no avail. The animals are always roaming the streets and daring people.”

Speaking on her experience, Iya Oyo said: “On the fateful day, I was going to the bank with my son. We were walking on the walkway and saw the rams in front of us.

“Immediately they sighted us coming closer to them, one of the rams rushed towards me and hit me several times with its horns. I fell down. But as I was struggling to get up, the second ram joined in the attack. I thank God that some people came to my rescue and saved me from untimely death at the hands of these mad animals.”

Iya Oyo, who is currently receiving treatment at a traditional bone clinic in Ereguru, Ado Ekiti, where she was taken by sympathisers after the attack, lamented that she fell and passed out immediately and only become conscious at the clinic.

The director of the bone clinic, Chief Ezekiel Ogunjemilusi, said Iya Oyo was brought to his clinic in a serious condition with fracture to two sides of her right legs.

He said her treatment would take months.

However, the police arrested and detained the rams for two days at the Ado Ekiti Area Command over the incident.

Although there was no official statement from the Ekiti State police command, an officer at the area command confirmed the attack, and said it was wrong for owners of animals to allow them to roam the streets.

Efforts to speak with the alleged owner of the rams were unsuccessful as he was not available at the filling station he managed.

However, a source said that the rams had been released to the owner and that the victim had been relocated to another hospital in Akure, Ondo State, for better treatment.

The source also said that the owner of the rams had reached an understanding with the victim on the bills that would be incurred on her treatment.
