A blind man in America has died after accidentally setting his clothes on fire while trying to warm a towel in a microwave.
James Shaffer, 68, from Pennsylvania was taken to hospital on Tuesday evening after he warmed the towel to place it on his sore leg.
However, investigators have said that a dry towel will burn in a microwave within 15 seconds, something that Shaffer didn’t realise, setting his clothes on fire.
David Ream, Oakland Fire Department’s deputy chief, said that Shaffer suffered burns to 80 percent of his body, but even apologised to paramedics as he was taken to hospital.
Speaking to WJAC TV, Mr Ream said: "He was very apologetic, he was telling us every couple of minutes that he was sorry, he should have known better.
"He was very, very calm for the situation we had at hand. We were shocked.
"He was talking to us, just normally like we’re talking back and forth, with no issues."
Mr Shaffer died in hospital on Wednesday morning, with his death officially attributed to smoke inhalation.
His family have said that while they checked on him every day, he was extremely capable of living alone.
