Nigerians with a grounding in British history have found their analogy for General Muhammadu Buhari’s epic struggle to regain power in the legend of Robert the Bruce.

Before inflicting a humiliating defeat on the British at the battle of Bannockburn in 1314, the Scottish king drew courage from a spider, grappling to spin its web across the roof of a cave. The spider only succeeded after three attempts, inspiring the maxim: “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try, again.”

Gen Buhari, who is among a clutch of former generals who rose to prominence in the turbulent aftermath of independence in 1960, first came to power in a coup in 1983. Professing himself a born-again democrat, he made three previous attempts to win it back at the ballot box, each time gaining only about half the votes he needed.

His resounding victory this week, in the face of bounteous skulduggery, is an object lesson in perseverance and arguably one of the most significant political events on the continent since the 1994 election in South Africa brought an end to white minority rule. For the first time in Nigeria’s history an incumbent president has been unseated by the electorate, along with the party that has governed (and often misgoverned) Nigeria since military rule ended in 1999.

For the first time also, a sitting Nigerian president accepted with humility that he was obliged to go.

Elated by the positive implications for the country’s fledgling democracy, Olusegun Obasanjo, a former president, told the Financial Times this week that if he were to live another life, he would choose to be a Nigerian a second time. The country, he said, had surmounted many crises since independence. “Some people in Africa believe an incumbent government cannot be removed by the will of the people,” he added. “We have done it.” Mr Obasanjo, with whom the incoming president has not always seen eye to eye, said he believed Gen Buhari was “intelligent enough” to move Africa’s most-populous state forward. “He is a man who lives a modest life and I believe he will manage the affairs of Nigeria by and large the way he manages his own affairs.”

Although this week’s events are unique, there is also a sense of déjà vu about the general’s march to power, 30 years after he first took it in a coup. In 1983, as now, Africa’s leading oil producer was in the throes of an oil shock. A collapse in state revenues revealed how bloated government had become. Austerity beckoned, and Gen Buhari imposed it with a “war on indiscipline” in the 20 months before he was overthrown by rival officers.

That period, when hundreds were locked up on the mildest suspicion of fraud, earned him an image of uncompromising ruthlessness that still unsettles many. But it also earned him admirers, who believe he was overthrown by corrupt elements of his own regime just as his policies began to yield results. “If I had had another two years in office then Nigeria might be a different place today,” he says. His ousting led to a prolonged period of detention after which he divorced his first wife Safinatu, with whom he has five children.

His second wife, Aisha, with whom he also has five children, is now the first lady in waiting. The statuesque beauty of one of his daughters proved to be an electoral asset; when a photograph of her went viral, one social media commentator observed that “anyone who can produce her can produce the change we need.”

In 2011, when Gen Buhari last tried and failed to win power at the polls, change did not seem so attractive. Each of his previous campaigns came at a time when oil prices - on which Nigeria still depends for about 70 per cent of state revenues - were either recovering or close to their peak. His ascetic reputation was a bit of a damp squib when the country was enjoying an oil boom.

Curbing the excesses of the political class - the centrepiece of the lean, 72-year-old’s campaign - has a more urgent ring now the oil price has fallen. So has his pledge to tackle the spread of Boko Haram terrorists in the north.

Gen Buhari is something of a throwback, one of a group of generals and coup plotters from yesteryear who have remained influential ever since. Their concern, when they joined the army as young men in the 1960s, was to find a way for the predominately Muslim north to catch up with the much more developed and mostly Christian south. That quandary persists today.

Born in the northern state of Katsina, in the dusty brush of the Sahel, Gen Buhari now sits atop a complex coalition that helped win him support in the south, where in the last election he garnered almost none. He has softened and developed a twinkling sense of humour, as transpired in a recent interview when your correspondent ran out of paper. “Not ideal for a journalist,” he quipped.

Despite the broad alliance he has built, pulling Nigerians together at a time of intensifying regional, religious and ethnic friction will be a daunting task. Some southern Christians, conscious of how pockets of their region have modernised and taken off in recent years, remain uneasy that the presidency is shifting back north.

“This is a major northern revival which will take a while for the others to wake up and recognise,” says a contemporary of Gen Buhari’s who served in several governments. “When they do they are going to feel very uncomfortable. Much will depend on how he exercises power and how sensitive he is to national unity.”

A lawyer, Atueyi Chukwudi Felix, has revealed why he and other Igbo people who were at the palace of Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, laughed and clapped when he threatened and cursed Igbo if they did not vote for the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Akinwunmi Ambode.

Felix said Akiolu was only joking and speaking with them as friends, adding that friends were always free with one another. He alleged that the person who did the video the event and made it public had a political motive.

The motive, he said, was to curry favour for the Peoples Democratic Party. Felix noted that he felt it was expedient for him to speak up before things get out of hand. He said: “I strongly suspect that all this is being portrayed in this manner simply to curry votes for the Saturday’s coming election, which is already at hand.” He stated that the ongoing saga might compel some people, who had hitherto been indifferent to their civic duty, to go out of anger and vote against the Oba’s advice, just to dare him.

He said: “What the Oba said was fully and simply directed to only the Igbos present at the meeting who His Majesty considered to be very close to him and should understand him well enough. “When one talks to his very close friends, he tends to be very free with them.

“He was being very free with those present at the meeting and wanted us to realize how serious and close he takes us and our votes because he could not imagine us giving him our words only to turn back and do the very opposite.”

Felix stressed that Akiolu did not force them to the meeting. According to him: “We were the ones that went to him on solidarity visit, so it would be very evil of us to only go and deceive him there.

“He only jokingly warned the people present at the meeting who he considered his own people.” The lawyer argued that if close attention was paid to the video, which went viral, Nigerians would discover that there was no specific point he referred to ‘all the Igbos in Lagos.’

He said that it was because they were close friends to Akiolu and understood him quite well that those of them present at the occasion applauded and laughed at the end of his speech. “We were expected to thereafter talk to our people in civilized manner to convince them and canvass for their votes if we truly believe we are capable of doing so,” said Felix.

“The tradition of lagoon water threat was directed only to those present there at the meeting, jokingly as culture demands. Although he appeared serious, but we all understood it as a joke, that was why we all applauded him and made fun of it there.”

Felix said that he was shocked at the twist the play took after the video went viral, stressing that he suspected serious politics at play. He said he wouldn’t know who recorded the speech and decided to play politics with it, but “it’s most unfair to his majesty to be portrayed in this manner.”

US renowned publication, Financial Times, has likened former governor of Lagos State and APC leader, Bola Tinubu to Machiavelli.

Here is an excerpt from the FT article, titled Man Who Helped Topple Nigerian President Displays Svengali Touch:

"From his redoubt on Bourdillon road in upmarket Lagos, a man popularly known as the Jagaban cemented his reputation this week as a political Svengali with the role he played helping to orchestrate the downfall of Nigeria’s sitting president, Goodluck Jonathan.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose name comes from a chieftaincy title bestowed on him by the town of Borgu, in Nigeria’s north, was from 1999 to 2007 the provincial governor of the country’s economic engine, the coastal state and megacity of Lagos.

The political godfather of Nigeria's south west, Mr Tinubu's unlikely alliance with the austere former military ruler, now president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, made possible the first opposition victory in Nigeria’s electoral history.

"There needed to be an alignment for us to be able to stare down the government in power. There needed to be a catalyst for that alignment. He was the most prepared for that," says one of Mr Tinubu’s lieutenants.

The manner in which that alignment evolves, is now among the big questions Nigerians are asking when considering the likely character of the incoming administration.

Described as “deeply Machiavellian” and a “master strategist” by one of his party peers, the Jagaban has cannily built a political empire among ethnic Yorubas in Lagos and the south west, as formidable, according to allied politicians, as that of Obafemi Awolowo, who led Nigeria’s second largest ethnic block at independence.

He did so over the past decade and a half, having survived a string of bruising turf wars with the ruling People’s Democratic party, which was forged from political networks across Nigeria during the 1998 transition from military rule.

PDP barons had become so adept since at oiling the electoral machine, that they sometimes boasted the party would still be in power in 100 years.

It was the merger of the Action Congress last year, with the party of the president-elect, strong in the north but weak elsewhere, that made it possible for the opposition to challenge and ultimately defeat the PDP. The two parties between them controlled block support in both of Nigeria’s most populous regions; Mr Tinubu’s in the south west and Gen Buhari’s in the north west.

“I am in the same union as Buhari to salvage a Nigeria that is drifting and that has faced a storm of economic deterioration,” Mr Tinubu said at a celebration party at his house this week. Outside the formidable gates, a mob of hundreds of young men ecstatic at the success of their city patron, were shouting “Jagaban”.

Yet the Jagaban is a controversial figure, resented by some for the dominating machine politics he has brought to the south west, but adored by others, especially in Lagos, who see his hand behind the remarkable renaissance of the city in the past 15 years.

Once a byword for urban decay, Lagos has begun to thrive under Babatunde Fashola, who Mr Tinubu promoted as his successor as governor, and then sometimes shielded from the rough and tumble of politics as he went about reviving the city with technocratic verve.

Mr Tinubu attributes the success of the campaign, the most disciplined by an opposition group in Nigeria’s history and sophisticated in terms of the data monitoring it used to keep on top of events, to compromise.

"Our defined objective is on the plank of a progressive social welfare programme. Once we agreed to that then we consolidated the merger," he says, of last year’s deal, which superseded a less formal alliance that came unstuck in 2011 polls.

Against expectations the party survived a tough contest for the leadership, which saw Mr Tinubu’s candidate, a Christian pastor and Lagos lawyer, Yemi Osinbajo, win the vice-presidential slot.

The future of the union could now determine how effective Nigeria’s incoming government is in office.

Some leading members of the victorious opposition worry about the compatibility of Mr Tinubu and Gen Buhari and about the influence the former might wield, without any formal position in the party, in the forthcoming battle over federal government appointments.

In the immediate future, Mr Tinubu is likely to be distracted by his battle to maintain influence in Lagos, where his preferred candidate for governor is facing a tough challenge in the polls on April 11. “There is no need for a power struggle. We are concentrating our efforts in reversing the decay,” Mr Tinubu says.

He is not a politician who is insecure. According to both detractors and fans, one of his attributes, rare among older politicians in Nigeria, has been to spot talent and nurture it. He absorbed this lesson according to one ally, when working at ExxonMobil.

“We bring talent to governance. We don’t want Lilliputians. We want people who can think and act,” he said. Among the bright, young crowd in his small, home office in attendance, were perhaps some of Nigeria’s future leaders.”
Following the controversy generated by the hate remarks of the Oba of Lagos against Igbos living in the State, a former governor of the State and National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has waded in saying the Oba is not the party's spokesman.

Tinubu, who was speaking at a rally in Iganmu, Lagos on Tuesday, while reacting to the controversial comments of the monarch, explained that he (Tinubu) was the first Yoruba governor to ever appoint an Igbo commissioner, alleging that the Peoples Democratic Party, having lost the presidential elections were desperately trying to pull the APC into the Akiolu controversy.

He said the Coordinator of the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria, Ifeanyi Ubah, and the PDP leader, Bode George, were only making baseless accusations against the ruling party in Lagos.

According to the former Lagos governor, “The Oba is not a politician. His job is to accommodate all political parties, whether PDP, APC or SDP. So, what did he (Ubah) go and do at the palace?

“To you Igbos, don’t we pay your children’s school fees like others? Or is it the palace that pays for it? When we conducted an exam and a spelling competition, an Igbo boy, Ebuka, from Anambra, came first and he became the governor for one day.

“Those that won the competition three times in a row were Igbo. Ebuka was sent to Switzerland computer school and then Obafemi Awolowo University. We did not say he was an Igbo boy and he would not enjoy. He became an executive in Oando and he is now in Canada.

“Another boy, Felix, won and went to Switzerland and OAU. We paid his scholarship; we did not deny him because he is Igbo,” Tinubu said.
