<b>Buruji Kashamu, the Nigerian senator-elect wanted by United States authorities for alleged drug offences, has accused a leader of his political party, Bode George, of instigating a raid on his residence in Lagos in an attempt to extradite him to the U.S.</b></div>

Nearly two dozen operative of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, stormed Mr. Kashamu’s home Saturday. It was unclear if they sought to arrest Mr. Kashamu.</div>

A U.S federal grand jury, in 1998, charged Mr. Kashamu and 14 others for their alleged involvement in an international conspiracy to smuggle heroin into America.</div>

He denies any wrongdoing and says the American government is mistaking him for another person.</div>

Mr. Kashamu has instituted a lawsuit to block any move by the Nigerian government to release him to face trial in the U.S.</div>

In a statement Saturday, the PDP leader said he had confirmed that the Nigerian government, through the Attorney General of the Federation, did not authorise the raid on his home.</div>

He said his political rival, Mr. George, instigated his wife, who heads the anti-narcotic agency, to invade his home as part of a plot to extradite him.</div>

The statement, signed by Mr. Kashamu’s media, Austin Oniyokor, said “this latest onslaught is a confirmation of the alleged plot to illegally abduct him in spite of the pending suit against this illegality”.</div>

“We have confirmed that they do not have a warrant of arrest, just as the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice has said that it did not give any order to carry out this illegality,” the statement said.</div>

Mr. Kashamu said he had “confirmed that this illegality is being designed and executed by Chief Bode George whose wife is the Director General of the NDLEA, all in a bid to score cheap political points.”</div>

Mr. Kashamu urged “all well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on NDLEA, Chief George and his wife to toe the path of the rule of law and follow due processes, Kashamu cried out”.</div>

John Oyegun, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says he is sure that his party at the federal government would "make things better", but he has warned Nigerians that there are certainly "tough days ahead".</div>

Speaking at a two-day retreat for APC senators-elect in Abuja on Saturday, Oyegun said the incoming Buhari government will need ₦4.1 trillion to pay salaries at the federal and state levels, make payments for petrol subsidy, and service debts incurred by the outgoing administration.</div>

He lamented the state of the economy, but assured Nigerians that the APC government would perform well. He added, though, that change in the state of things would not happen overnight.</div>

"Make no mistake about it, the days ahead will be tough, and this is not crying wolf", he said.</div>

"From the first day of this government, a total of ₦4.1 trillion will be required for sundry expenses, including oil subsidy payment, arrears of salaries at federal and state levels and debt servicing, just to mention a few.</div>

"Put this against the background of the falling oil prices, the unprecedented $60-billion debt, which the outgoing government has left for the incoming one, the largely depleted Excess Crude Account (ECA), the $60-billion that have been lost in the last four years to crude oil theft (and which are perhaps still being lost as we speak), the need to rapidly create jobs for our teeming army of unemployed youths, enhance the security of the citizenry and improve the economy, and you will begin to understand the enormity of the challenges ahead.</div>

"This is not a lamentation forum, but still, we must tell ourselves the truth about the state of the nation, and the expectations of our people.</div>

"Yes, we will get there, but it won't happen overnight. You, our senators-elect, will be called upon to take extraordinary actions to address the extraordinary challenges that confront our nation. The incoming president, more than anyone else, needs the support and cooperation of the 8th National Assembly to fulfill his campaign promises to Nigerians.</div>
