Jimi Agbaje, the Peoples Democratic Party Lagos State gubernatorial candidate, promised to break the jinx in the state by winning the governorship election to unseat the All Progressives Congress in the 2015 elections.</div>

Agbaje said this while speaking with newsmen at the PDP two-day National Convention at the Abuja Eagle Square on Wednesday.</div>

Agbaje lamented that the people of Lagos State were suffering in the hands of the APC-led government, which he said, was due to be changed.</div>

Some 3,073 delegates from the 36 states of the federation and the FCT are to ratify the position of Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu as the PDP National Chairman and President Goodluck Jonathan as the party’s sole presidential candidate.</div>

The Chairman of the Convention Planning Committee, Alhaji Haliru Bello, in a welcome address, declared that the exercise was meant to properly elect Mu’azu and three other members of the PDP National Working Committee.</div>

The two other affected NWC members are the party’s National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo, and its National Auditor, Adewale Adeyanju.</div>

“The path of fraudulent electoral success is condemnable and we intend to fight this. There is an opportunity to appeal and I hope the party will do the right thing. “In 2006 during the primary, Bode George manipulated the same way to produce Hilda (widow of the slain governorship aspirant, Funsho Williams) as the winner until common sense prevailed. We submitted ourselves to a process that we thought would be free and fair but unfortunately, they decided to play religious politics and manipulation of electoral process, particularly on the Election Day.”</div>

“Bode George brought thugs to come and harass and intimidate delegates at the primary. I was not even at the primary when the violence started but it was Bode George’s people. They perpetrate violence and then run to his house for cover.”</div>

However, George while responding to Obanikoro’s allegations at another press conference, described the former minister as a “rude boy” who lacked respect for elders.</div>

He said, “I don’t want to lose my anger but I hate it when people don’t have respect for elders, no respect for others and think that they alone have the right to be there. The day he lobbied to be minister, he brought Adebayo Alao-Akala to my office to prostrate and beg me because they did election here in my compound and he was not selected. He had just one vote.</div>

An Abuja High Court has found a former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, guilty of contempt, after he defied the court’s order barring him from releasing his autobiography.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mr Obasanjo released the new book, <i>My Watch</i>, on Tuesday, in Lagos, days after the court order.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The court had ordered that the book launch be put on hold over claims that the three-volume series contained details of a libel case already before the court.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The case involves a drug trafficking allegation made by Mr Obasanjo against Buruji Kasahmu, a leader of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the south-west.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mr Kashamu had approached the court, requesting for an order stopping the release of the book.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Judge Acted In Error</b> </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, Mr Obasanjo defied the court order and proceeded with the book launch, saying the judge acted in error and deserved to be sanctioned.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The former president also said the book had already been published before the court gave its order.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Justice Valentine Ashi, in a ruling on Wednesday, gave Mr Obasanjo 21 days to demonstrate why he should not be punished for going ahead to publish the book.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

The court also ordered the Inspector General of Police, the Director General of the State Security Service (SSS) and the Comptroller of Customs to recover all the books from all book stands, sales agents, vendors, the sea and airports and deposit them with the court’s registrar pending the determination of the case.</div>

Mr Ashi said it was immaterial that the book was published before the interim orders were made.</div>

He said Mr Obasanjo should not have published the book in the first place since the Kashamu case was already in court.</div>

<b>“Disregard Of Pendency”</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“The fact that the book was published in November is irrelevant. As long as the substantive suit is not yet determined, no party is entitled to publish or comment on material facts that are yet to be decided on by the court,” the judge said.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
“I hold the defendant, not only in contempt of the court, but to show cause why he should not be punished for contempt and ordered to undo what he has wrongly done.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“The defendant, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo shall be given 21 days, from the day this order is served on him, to show cause, via affidavit, why he should not be punished for contempt committed by publishing and distributing for sale to the public, the book, <i>My Watch</i>, in plain disregard of the pendency of substantive the suit and the order of this court made on December 5, 2014 restraining him from doing so.</div>

“The defendants, whether by himself, agents, servants, privies or whatever name called, is hereby restrained from further publication or offering for sale or distribution, in any way or manner, the book called <i>My Watch</i> or the like of the visual or written materials which contains a re-publication or statement extracted from the letter referred to by the plaintiff,” the judge said.</div>

He also ordered that orders of the court be served on all media houses in the country and be equally served on Mr Obasanjo by publication in two national dailies.</div>

The judge rejected claims by Mr Obasanjo’s lawyer that Mr Kashamu failed to produce the book to prove it contained libellous details.</div>

The judge said that it was the duty of the defendant, who has the book, to show the court that the plaintiff’s fear was misplaced.</div>

He said Mr. Obasanjo’s failure to do so, showed he had something to hide.</div>

Mr Obasanjo’s lawyer, Realwon Okpanach, said the former president will appeal the ruling.</div>

He said the court order, which the former president flouted, was given in error since it was not proven that the book contained libellous materials.</div>

“The orders made cannot be enforced. They want the court to stop an act that had been concluded. That is impossible. We had published the book in November, they came before the court in December and asked that the publishing should be stopped. Is that possible?” he said.</div>

“We shall file our appeal within the stipulated time of 14 days in the case of interlocutory orders.”</div>

The Directorate of State Security (DSS), has arrested a pastor of one of the new generation churches, an evangelist, two nurses and 13 others for child trafficking and kidnapping in Anambra state.</div>

The suspects were paraded at the DSS state headquarters in Awka with their faces bound in shame.</div>

Also, the three children taken away from their parents were rescued; they were three year old Chinonso Oriuwa, two year old Chidera Abiara and seven month old Chinasa Abiara.</div>

The suspects were Chinuru Martins (a pastor) from Umuahia in Abia State, Solomon Loveday Nwadinobi from Umuahia and Chiko Chima Ogu from Obowu in Imo state, all males.</div>

Others were females, Nnena Ogbonna Nwachukwu from Bende in Abia, Eunice Tochukwu Uwakwe (Obowu), Glory Nnennaya Okwara a nurse from Arochukwu, Felicia Ebeh (Mbaise), Esther Eleanya (Abiriba).</div>

Also, Ifeoma Iwu (Obowu), Anurika Theophilus, Osisioma in Abia state, Adora Nwaneri, an evangelist from Orlu in Imo state, Loveth Nwankwo (Isiala Ngwa in Abia) and Comfort Charity Ononuju.</div>

Parading the suspects yesterday, the Anambra State Director of (DSS), Mr. Alex Okeiyi, said there had been rampant cases of missing children in recent times.</div>

He said many churches, and their pastors are involved in this kind of business, adding that the situation had become a source of worry to security and the society.</div>

According to Okeiyi, “this is beyond child trafficking, it is pure kidnap and they will be handed over to the relevant authorities for further action”</div>

He said a total of 17 persons including some members of the syndicate and buyers of the children were arrested.</div>

The assignment, according to Okeiyi was carried out by his command in collaboration with her Abia state counterpart and 144 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, Asa in Abia state.</div>

Furthermore, DSS said Nnenna Nwachukwu who is a neighbor to the family of the two of the children was alleged to have masterminded the kidnap of Chidera and Chinasa Abiara from the mother Chinonso on September 2nd 2014 at Uli in Ihiala local government area of Anambra state.</div>

It was equally, alleged that during the incident, their mother was injected with a substance by the suspects and tied her legs and hands that made her passed out.</div>

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader in Ogun State, Prince Buruji Kashamu, on Tuesday, said he would file contempt charges against former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, for going ahead to launch his controversial book.</div>

Reacting to the development, Kashamu said the action by Chief Obasanjo, again, confirmed the former president’s “knack for lawlessness and arbitrariness.”</div>

According to him, Obasanjo, by this act, had “shown that he does not have respect for the judiciary.</div>

Former President Olusegun Obsanjo has sensationally linked the travails of Nuhu Ribadu, former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to his refusal to marry late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s daughter. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Yar’Adau’s daughters were famous for marrying big political figures, mostly governors. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Ribadu, then an assistant inspector general of police, was removed as EFCC chairman, demoted to the rank of deputy commissioner of police and eventually dismissed after a face-off with Yar’Adua. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was generally believed then that Ribadu’s refusal to terminate the corruption trial of James Ibori, former governor of Delta state and Yar’Adua’s close ally, was responsible for his travails. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
While not dismissing the link, Obasanjo has also suggested that Ribadu’s refusal to marry Yar’Adua’s daughter could have contributed to his maltreatment by the former president who died in 2010. </div>

He also wrote in <i>My Watch</i>, his three-volume memoirs launched on Tuesday,  that Tanimu Yakubu Kurfi, thought to be the most powerful man in Yar’Adua’s government, had a fall-out with Ribadu over a woman who was said to be more interested in the former EFCC chairman. </div>

Obasanjo  further alleged that Babagana Kingibe had a personal fall-out with Nasir el-Rufai over the infidelity of one of Kingibe’s wives. </div>

The retired general wrote: “It was revealed, for instance, that Tanimu’s main reason for wanting to fight Nuhu to a standstill was the allegation that a woman he was interested in marrying was showing more interest in Nuhu! I understand that Tanimu, in the end, married the lady, and I wondered if that would be the end of the war of attrition against Nuhu. </div>

“This was about the same time that Umaru encouraged Nuhu to marry one of his daughters, an idea which Nuhu spurned. Could that have been partly responsible for Umaru’s fury? </div>

“The Kingibe case as revealed is quite similar to Tanimu’s, as a woman is at the centre of it also. Nasir el-Rufai was accused of knowingly harbouring a boyfriend of one of Kingibe’s wives in his guest house, where this wife and her boyfriend would meet. </div>

“If Nasir chose to make his house available to his friend out of hospitality, one wonders if he could also determine which guest, male or female, his friend would receive. It would have been a different case if Nasir himself was accused of dating Kingibe’s wife!” </div>

Obasanjo further narrated how he was “blacked out” of Yar’Adua’s government at the instance of a “cabal”. </div>

The former head of state revealed that a very close friend of the Villa and a member of Yar’Adua’s inner circle, a minister from Katsina, spent two nights in his house in Abeokuta after Yar’Adua’s death. </div>

“What he told me, which may or may not have been true, was astounding, and for me another good lesson. It was sickening how Tanimu and Kingibe used government instruments at their disposal to settle personal scores. </div>

“At first, it was the same men now in the corridors of power, like Tanimu Yakubu Kurfi and Baba Kingibe, who suddenly remembered ‘the evil’ I had done them in the past, which they wanted to avenge. For Tanimu, whom I appointed Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria on the recommendation of then Governor Umaru Yar’Adua, my offence was that I did not appoint him to run and handle the Yar’Adua Presidential Campaign and manage the campaign fund. From what I had seen of his performance at the Federal Mortgage Bank, I would not have made or allowed such an appointment. </div>

“For Baba Kingibe his grouse, I came to hear, was that I had advised Umaru Yar’Adua to consider the background of the man he was proposing to appoint as the secretary to the government of the federation. Baba was rejected by the government of Cameroon, at one time, when he was proposed as Nigerian Ambassador; and when Shehu Yar’Adua and I were in Kirikiri Prison, Shehu did not have any good thing to say about Baba Kingibe. </div>

“Umaru Yar’Adua told Tanimu Yakubu Kurfi and Baba Kingibe my impression of them and they went up in arms, aided and supported by two governors – Bukola Saraki and James Ibori – for their own personal and selfish reasons. There were other men and women who played supporting roles. I was neither worried nor have apologies for my views and impressions, which are well grounded in evidence.” </div>

Obasanjo said Yar’Adua later sacked Kingibe when “overambition was noticed by his boss” at a time ill-health was taking its toll on the late president’s work. </div>

With Yar’Adua’s health getting worse, intrigues ensued and members of the “cabal” went after anyone they perceived as close to Obasanjo, including the VP, Goodluck Jonathan, who was starved of information and access to the president. </div>

Obasanjo wrote: “Tanimu confided in his friend, saying that they all realised that it was only a matter of time; the centre would not hold. Everybody then decided to make money for themselves before the centre collapsed; and they did so while the No. 2 man in government knew little or nothing about what was going on. </div>

“He was kept in the dark. Government had been privatised by the cabal. For the whole of this period, the vice president could not chair a cabinet meeting, and he did not know how long the president would be away. During my administration, my VP chaired cabinet meetings any Wednesday that I was not physically in Abuja; and why not, after all if anything serious happened to me the VP should take over automatically. </div>

“In this case, however, Yar’Adua’s VP was not even briefed of the president travelling out of the country. He was starved of funds for the maintenance of his office and residence and, in fact, unimaginably, was later called in to see the dead body of the president on his death bed. I know the plight of the VP because, on a few occasions, I had to encourage him to bear it by being patient.” </div>

Obasanjo said the party also attacked him. </div>

He wrote: “The amendment to the Peoples Democratic Party’s Constitution, which puts a former president who is a product of PDP as the chairman of the party’s board of trustees, was spearheaded by then Governors James Ibori, Makarfi and Chief Tony Anenih. Whatever their reason for that constitutional amendment, I was the one available to occupy the post. </div>

“But when Umaru and members of his cabal, along with their associates, set about pulling down Obasanjo, they pursued it to the board of trustees. Chief Tony Anenih and James Ibori were fellow travellers. I personally gained nothing from being chairman of the board of trustees (BOT). If anything, it cost me in terms of time, resources, and effort to settle quarrels and feuds within the party. </div>

“Nevertheless, I have derived benefits from the party as I became elected president of Nigeria on its platform; therefore, I should contribute whatever I can to the fortunes and sustenance of the party. But, having participated actively in bringing up my successor and my successor’s successor, I believe that I have adequately paid my dues. Nobody in Goodluck Jonathan’s camp, or sponsored or encouraged by them, is clamouring for my bowing out, but I personally believe in doing so while the ovation is loudest.”</div>

The unprepared and unplanned transition from Yar’Adua to Jonathan was a more difficult exercise in some respects. One reason was the ‘cloak and dagger’ manner in which Yar’Adua’s illness was handled. </div>

“The illness of a President cannot be regarded as private. His health has implications for the security and wellbeing of the nation. “I remember that in 1978 or 1979 Chief Awolowo visited me while I was military head of state and shared with me how he would always stay at home to attend to the work at hand and only make a private visit to the UK once a year for health reasons if he became president of Nigeria. I made it clear to the chief that once he became president of Nigeria, he could have no private visit to anywhere as such. Wherever he would be, he would be on duty, and the totality of his life would be public. I jokingly added that the only privacy he might lay claim to would be when he was at home with Mama Chief H.I.D., and that even then his security staff would be on twenty-four-hour duty.</div>

“That was part of the nature of the job. In the case of Umaru’s illness, it took me by surprise because I had concluded that all was well, judging from his medical report that I requested and he submitted to me and the specialist advice I received from it. The report said that once he was off dialysis it would mean that he had had a transplant or treatment that had caused his kidneys to work as normal. </div>

“Before he went to Germany, after being rushed to the National Hospital in Abuja, he phoned to tell me that he was going out of the country for medical reasons. What he did not reveal was the nature of his illness. I, however, became somewhat apprehensive when I learned that he was placed on dialysis that night. The persistence of the illness, and the cover up, caused me more apprehension especially when he abandoned Germany for Saudi Arabia. I never heard anything from him after that. The story I heard about his visit to Saudi Arabia was awkward. He did not inform his deputy as to how to manage things in his absence. </div>

“On arrival in Saudi Arabia he was wheeled into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and for at least forty-eight hours nobody was in communication with him as far as the governance of Nigeria was concerned. What it meant was that for that period of time, Nigeria had no government. What a great pity! I wanted to know more about the exact medical condition of Yar’Adua, the president of Nigeria. </div>

“I realised that a number of countries would know for sure; among them would be Germany, the US, Saudi Arabia, the UK, France, Israel and maybe Russia. I decided to indirectly check with the ambassadors of these countries. What I heard did not allay my fears. One said, ‘Your President is surely not too well’. Another said, ‘We believe he would be able to cope.’ Both were diplomatic answers, but one was more so than the other. </div>

“At that point, I was left in no doubt that the arrangement made was shoddy, tardy, unpatriotic, selfish, and reckless. No nation should be left hanging in such a manner. I subtly campaigned for the emergence of Jonathan as acting president to take the country out of tenterhooks. </div>

“I also publicly made the point that if you accept responsibility for a job and, due to no fault of your own but due to circumstances beyond your control, you are incapacitated to the extent that you can no longer perform to your own satisfaction or to the satisfaction of those you are supposed to serve, morality, duty, responsibility, honour, good sense, and patriotism demand that you act appropriately. </div>

“At the same time, as debates were going on in the media as to what should or should not be, I was consulting genuine and objective leaders of thought regarding the way to go. The son of a former Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Alhaji Jhalil Tafawa-Balewa, on Tuesday, in Abuja, disclosed that nobody bribed him before he decided to step down for President Goodluck Jonathan in the race for the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead the 2015 elections.</div>

Nigerian Tribune recalls that the PDP presidential aspirant had recently withdrawn his intention to run for the presidential primaries, saying he was already supporting the candidacy of President Jonathan for the party’s sole ticket.</div>

Alhaji Tafawa-Balewa, in a chat in Abuja, added that his withdrawal from the race was done in the interest of the party.</div>

The battle for the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is going to be one of the closest fought since the 1993 face-off between Babagana Kingibe and MKO Abiola in the Social Democratic Party (SDP), <i>TheCable</i> Verdict 2015 Panel has predicted. </div>

At a meeting that went into the wee hours of Wednesday, 12 APC governors reached a final agreement to pitch their tent with Muhammadu Buhari, former military head of state, but Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president, is reaching out directly to the delegates. </div>

At the meeting, held at Bola Tinubu’s instance at an office on Adeola Odeku Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, the governors who agreed to support Buhari are: Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara), Ibrahim Geidam (Yobe), Kashim Shettima (Borno), Tanko Al-Makura (Nasarawa), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara), Babatunde Fashola (Lagos), Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo), Adams Oshiomhole (Edo), Rauf Aregbesola (Osun), Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto) and Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers). </div>

The two other governors, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (Kano) and Rochas Okorocha (Imo), are also gunning for the presidential ticket. </div>

<i>TheCable</i> understands that Kwankwaso has been persuaded to step down for Buhari, which he agreed, but will still put up an appearance without putting up a fight at the convention. </div>

Atiku, on this part, is basing his calculations on the fact that APC governors control only 14 states and their influence in the remaining 22 states is not strong. </div>

TheCable understands that Atiku has zeroed in on delegates from 16 states which they consider winnable: Adamawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Benue, Plateau, Bauchi, Jigawa, Taraba, Yobe, Delta, Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu, Ekiti and Ondo ─ as well as the FCT. </div>
