<b>ASABA, NIGERIA - Tragedy struck on Friday in Asaba, Delta State, when a 37-year-old house wife, Maureen Akowe, a graduate of sociology from the state-owned university allegedly lost her four-month-old baby to her dog.</b></div>

It was gathered that the four-month-old baby was driven in the mother's car alongside the dog to a popular supermarket along Okpanam Road, Asaba, where the house wife had gone for shopping for the baby's upkeep.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Report says the unsuspecting nursing mother left the baby, a nanny and the dog inside the car and wound down the windows to allow ventilation into the car before moving into the supermarket.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://leadership.ng/news/455719/dog-eats-up-4-month-old-baby-in-delta-state"><b>LEADERSHIP</b></a> newspaper gathered from witnesses that while she was busy shopping, the dog allegedly made straight for the little baby to eat her up while the nanny screamed for help but all to no avail.</div>

The shouts by the nanny attracted two security personnel at the supermarket to the car but by which time the baby, identified as Chinonso, had been bitten severally on the stomach by the dog, leaving the baby in a pool of blood.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The dog had gone wild and was barking menacingly to scare onlooker by the time the baby's mother got wind of the development and rushed to the scene.</div>

The baby was taken to a nearby hospital along Nnebisi Road, but it was too late by the time they got to the hospital as the baby, the woman's first child, had already died.</div>

Speaking with the nanny who claimed to have hailed from one of the states in the eastern part of the country and did not want her name in the print, she said: </div>

Madam carry the dog and baby and asked us to stay inside the car, because the dog was to be treated at the veterinary. Suddenly I saw the dog moving closer to the baby and I shouted for help when the dog opened its teeth and I ran out of the car to call madam but she did not come on time.</blockquote>

Family sources said that the house wife had been married for 3 years without a baby before she took in for the baby that was delivered and named Chinonso.</div>

In a swift reaction, the husband of the woman amidst tears, and did not want his name on the print said: </div>

My wife said it is the devil's work and the devil's work will take her out of my house. I have warned her about the dog when I noticed that the dog had been behaving funny. She still kept carrying the dog claiming that she was going to give treatment to the dog. This is how the devil had ruined her.</blockquote>

<b>ABUJA, NIGERIA - President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday appointed General P. T. Boroh as the new coordinator of the Amnesty Programme for the Niger Delta militants.</b></div>

A statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said the appointment takes immediate effect.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The appointment which was announced Tuesday night in Abuja came on the heels of protests by the former militants over the non-payment of their allowances.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Adesina in the statement said the appointment of Boroh is expected to douse the tension over the outstanding allowances.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Brigadier-General P.T. Boroh (rtd) as the Coordinator of the Amnesty Programme for former Niger Delta militants. </div>

Brig. Boroh, whose appointment takes immediate effect, is to take over the responsibilities of the former Special Adviser to President Jonathan on Niger Delta who also doubled as Coordinator of the Amnesty Programme. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The appointment of a new Coordinator for the Amnesty Programme is expected to lead to the speedy resolution of recent hitches in its implementation such as the non-payment of outstanding allowances to ex-militants.</div>
</blockquote>

The Amnesty Programme was established by late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua in 2009 to calm the nerves of Niger Delta militants who were disrupting oil production on account of alleged maginalisation of the oil rich region in the distribution of the oil wealth in the country.</div>

<b>Nobody expected it to be so soon. Hardly had Barrister Nyesom Wike taken office as Governor of oil-rich Rivers state that his people were reported to have given him a new alias. Words came from some indigenes of the state that their newly sworn in governor is now called <i>Wike the Wicked</i>. I thought it was a joke until my attention was drawn to many activities the governor had reeled out since assuming office that were believed could only have emanated from a sadistic mind!</b></div>

First was the very crude and uncivilized manner the governor was reported to have pursued the issue of property recovery from some members of the immediate past government in the state. All the newspapers and not a few television stations reported the ugly scene of the invasion of the residence of the state’s former Commissioner of Information.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
With close to a battalion of heavily armed police men and sundry security operatives, the peace of the home of the said commissioner was rudely assaulted by heavy forklifts and pay-loaders to physically ‘arrest’ and impound vehicles alleged to be government property. The poor woman ex-commissioner was not at home when the invaders arrived, and without a Warrant, brutishly carted away two vehicles.</div>

The question on the lips of most impartial observers was, ‘why the show of such quantum of naked power?’ If government had any reason to suspect that some vehicles were in the possession of unauthorised persons or quarters, a more decent way to recover such property was to invite the possessor to explain why the vehicles or any government property should be in their possession. A simple procedure of courtesy.</div>

It bothers on brigandage and rough-neckedness for a man occupying exalted office of the Chief Executive of a state to get associated in whatever form with such act.</div>

Almost in a rampage, a mass sack of 344 lecturers and others employed at the Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori since September, 2014 by the state’s immediate past administration led by Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi has also been reported.</div>

So also was the disbandment of the Rivers State Road Traffic Management Authority (TIMA-RIV) and other actions bordering on witch–hunt and outright victimization which have made the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) to believe that the new governor of the state, Barrister Nyesom Wike, was out to play politics of vendetta. The Congress posited that such actions would not be in tandem with what the nation in general and Rivers State in particular needed at the moment.</div>

The General Manager of the State Television has also been booted out in a manner that really outraged the people of the state. The woman head of the station was believed to be a thorough professional who discharged her duties with the best ethics of her calling. Her only offence as narrated by people in the state was that she served under Wike’s purported enemies.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Every public officer in the state now lives in fear and trepidation that the rampaging axe of the Wicked may descend on their neck any time soon!</div>

Matters have now come to a head to warrant non-indigenes in Rivers State under the aegis of Endangered Non Indigenes Forum in Rivers State (EINFRS) to cry out to President Muhammadu Buhari, pleading with him to come to their rescue following an alleged threat by Governor Nyesom Wike to crack down on them as part of his determination to deal ruthlessly with associates and loyalties of the immediate past government.</div>

The concern of this writer is not whether Wike has a right to settle scores with his perceived political enemies. Politicians have their own peculiar way of dealing with each other. And Nigerian politicians are a special breed when it comes to extremisms.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Rivers state has probably not known peace for almost 3 years now. The immediate past governments at the Federal and state levels flexed muscles to no end, and the fall-out of the maddening drama may be the visit of wickedness and high-handedness on the losers in the long-drawn battle.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This scenario does not however justify unmitigated wickedness and sadistic display of power. Even in armed conflict, winners are still expected to be civil to their victims. There is a minimum level of human decency expected in all human relationships. And people who wield temporary and ephemeral power are reminded to always bear in mind that power is transient.</div>

It does not speak well of any one in power to behave as if drunk and intoxicated. It is the height of insensitivity and cruelty for some one in authority to derive joy in inflicting pain on those under his authority.</div>

Governor Wike surely will not like to be remembered as a wicked, vengeful and sadistic governor. And the earlier he calls his overzealous aides to order the better for the reputation he would like to carve for himself and be remembered by. ‘Wike the Wicked’ should not be allowed to stick.</div>

After all, whatever be the case, he has triumphed, so to say. He is currently the governor unless the tribunal decides otherwise. He should therefore have no cause or reason to be vindictive or allow people to run away with a name his parents did not give him.</div>

It is also not too late in the day to make amends. If vehicles needed to be recovered, simple, decent procedure can still be followed. If appointments needed be terminated, there are better and less painful ways to go about it. But a situation where a leader deliberately uses or mi-uses power to oppress or victimise or inflict pain on others is certainly not acceptable.</div>

The President of the National Coalition of Niger Delta Ex-Agitators (NCNDE-A), 'General' Israel Akpodoro, expressed worry over the incessant attacks and vituperations from Dokubo on national issues saying, those threats issued by him were "empty, bear-footed and  treasonable".</div>

Addressing a meeting of the Coalition in Ugheli, Delta State, Akpodoro contended that no section of the country has the power to hold others to ransom.</div>

Dokubo at the commemoration of the late Adaka Boro, in Yenagoa reportedly said he was ready to‎ take on the federal government if the interest of the region was not favourably considered by the incoming All Progressives Congress (APC) led administration.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Akpodoro told Dokubo to stop dragging the region into issues of personal interest stressing that the people of the Delta have decided to embrace peace and not war.</div>

He said the time has come for the likes of Dokubo in the Delta region not only to embrace peace but to also realise that the era of impunity, gangsterism‎ and nepotism was over emphasizing that the ex-militants who supported the APC and his candidate, Buhari before, during and after the elections are not slaves as claimed by Dokubo but that what they did "was a show of unfettered patriotism, solidarity and love to a nation above self-serving and myopic interests".</div>

The people of Niger Delta region, Akpodoro, said were already aware of the antics and mischief of those who use the region as a platform for self enrichment pointing out that such era would end with President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.</div>

Rather than continue to be on the opposition to the government, the President of the NCNDE-A urged the leaders of the people in the Delta region to go and preach peace in support of the incoming administration.</div>

He stressed that they stand to gain nothing from crisis but that peaceful approach to issue was an imperative for a better Delta region.</div>

Kogi born-John Oladele Nihi, had embarked on the journey from Abuja on the 4th of May, with the aim of honouring President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, whom he described as the hero of democracy, apparently because of the way and manner the outgoing president conceded defeat to President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari.</div>

Rated as the first Twitter Reality Show, Nihi made great use of the social media platform, providing constant updates on his progress in the journey and posting pictorial evidences to show the world that he was actually walking to Otuoke.</div>

<b>The Rivers State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mrs. Gesila Khan, has been told to get ready to go to jail for her alleged inglorious role in colluding with the State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to rig the March 28 and April 11 elections in the State.</b></div>

She is also being accused of obstructing justice by blocking the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the State from having access to relevant electoral materials with a view to seeking redress at the Election Petition Tribunal.</div>

"In case Mrs. Khan has forgotten, we wish to remind her that there is always a day of reckoning and that it is inescapable. Since she has chosen to collude with evil men to pervert justice for pecuniary gain, Mrs. Khan should prepare for the inevitable consequences of her actions. Her chosen path can only lead to jail and to monumental disgrace", Rivers APC said in a statement issued on Sunday in Port Harcourt by the State Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya.</div>

"Mrs. Khan should be aware that she shares in the bloodguilt arising from the murder of about a hundred APC members by Rivers PDP leaders and their paid agents. Where such characters are not duly punished we will never have a fair and peaceful election in Nigeria", the statement said.</div>

The defecting lawmakers identified as members of the anti-Dickson's camp were sacked by the assembly led by Speaker Kombowei Benson.</div>

It was gathered that the lawmakers' seats were declared vacant by Benson, believed to be a loyal member of the Dickson's camp.</div>

Following the loss of President Goodluck Jonathan on March 28 and ahead of the 2016 governorship election in the state, major stakeholders of the PDP are leaving in droves to APC.</div>

But the defectors attributed their decision to the internal wrangling in the PDP, which led to the emergence of two factions.</div>

The defectors whose seats were declared vacant are: Fini Angaye (Kolokuma/Opokuma constituency 2); Alfred Egba (Yenagoa constituency 1); Victor Prezi (Ekeremor Constituency 3) and Azibola Omekwe (Ogbia constituency 1), which is Jonathan's constituency.</div>

Benson reportedly said the decision to declare the seats vacant was based on the provision of Section 109 (1) of the constitution.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">

The governor, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, said the action of the state legislature was constitutional and would also instill party discipline and sanitise the polity.</div>

He condemned changing of parties at will by politicians, saying it was no longer acceptable and practicable in a thriving democracy.</div>

"The assembly has by this singular act set the pace and shown the direction of the new PDP in the State, where party discipline and loyalty, must be the overriding principles and factors for all members, going forward.</div>

"Indiscipline, disloyalty and greed have been the bane of the PDP at state and national levels in the past. Such acts would no longer be tolerated for whatever reason in the party."</div>

He went on: "We will continue to do the needful by ensuring that only those who respect the position of the party on issues are allowed to remain while all those with selfish and unacceptable behavioral patterns will be shown the way out for the good of the PDP."</div>

Also at the memorial of the late Maj. Jasper Adaka Boro yesterday, the governor further descended on the defecting lawmakers, dismissing them as betrayers.</div>

He said it was embarrassing that the Senator representing Jonathan's Bayelsa-East, Clever Ikisikpo and the Ogbia Federal constituency lawmaker, Nadu Karibo, ditched the PDP for the APC.</div>

Their actions were interpreted by PDP leaders in the state especially Jonathan's associates as embarrassment to the President and the PDP.</div>

At the Boro's wreath-laying ceremony which took place at the Heroes' Park Yenagoa, Dickson who was represented by his Deputy, Rear Admiral John Jonah, declared the defectors <i>persona non grata</i>.</div>

Apparently referring to them, Dickson said: "Even in the Bible, Jesus told his disciples 'you will deny me three times before cock crows'. We are still having about two weeks (to the handover) and the denial has started. Those are not the examples that we should follow.</div>

"As a people, we must stand united no matter the case. We must have a rallying point. Just because election is lost at the national level, our people are running to join others for no reason.</div>

<b>Gov. Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa on Thursday denied that he was planning to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).</b></div>

Mr. Dickson was responding to Wednesday's defection comment by the outgoing Senator representing Bayelsa-East Senatorial District, Clever Ikisikpo, who claimed that the Governor will soon join APC.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The lawmaker, while announcing his defection from the PDP, alongside other lawmakers from Bayelsa at the APC national secretariat on Wednesday, said Mr. Dickson will soon defect to the APC.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mr. Dickson described Mr. Ikisikpo's claim as uncharitable.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
In a statement issued on Thursday in Yenagoa by the his spokesperson, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, the Governor berated Mr. Ikisikpo for his comments.</div>

Mr. Dickson said the comments were made out of frustration.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
"Ikisikpo wants to dignify his perfidy and rope Governor Dickson into his dubious defection scheme," the statement said.</div>

"A man who rose from relative obscurity through the platform of the PDP from 1999 as House of Assembly member and later to the National Assembly. And serving as a two term member of the green chambers and from there rose on the shoulders of President Goodluck Jonathan to the Senate.</div>

"He could not even as a mark of honour and respect, wait for the President, his benefactor, kinsman and leader of a political party that gave him so much, to leave office before defecting to the APC.</div>

"It shows the height of desperation, treachery, mischief and blackmail perpetrated by some of the so-called PDP leaders, who worked to deny the party victory at the polls even against one of their own.</div>

"As a government, we are not surprised at Ikisikpo's action and others like him. In fact, the public should expect many more defections in the days to come from those, who worked against the party in the State Assembly elections.</div>
