<b>NASARAWA, NIGERIA - Armed Robbery in Karu local government area of Nasarawa State has taken a new turn as some residents receive warning from robbers to relocate or risk being killed. Some have been visited several times in the last six months. AGBO-PAUL AUGUSTINE visited one of the affected communities and reports.</b></div>

"They are so powerful that the police are even scared to venture into the environment to quash their terror on us. The boys operate with ease, rob at will and even determine who stays in the area and who is an undesirable element," said a terrified 32-year-old Rose Uchenna who has been robbed thrice in the last six months.</div>

Koroduma community popularly known as 'One Man Village' is located on the Abuja-Keffi highway in Nasarawa State, about 15km from Abuja city. It is a densely populated settlement and notorious for crimes as criminals and hoodlums operate freely.</div>

Most of the residents live in fear as sleeping at night has become more of a dreaded necessity than actual rest. The gang of robbers who terrorise the people, according to residents who spoke with <b>LEADERSHIP</b> Weekend, have good knowledge of most homes in the area.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sources said they even have information of newly acquired purchases of valuables by residents, also those who secure a new job, who made good sales in business and so forth. They are fully abreast with the daily businesses in the area and rob any household they feel has something to offer.</div>

This dare-devil gangs raid shops, stores and homes leaving in their trail, tears and sorrow. The residents live in perpetual fear. A victim of a recent attack, Mary Agada told LEADERSHIP Weekend that the hoodlums attack even those leaving for work in the early hours and those returning late. "They target many ladies in the night and early in the morning, snatching whatever they like and even raping some in some instances," she said.</div>

When LEADERSHIP Weekend visited Conkoro Street after a recent robbery attack victims cried for help as they narrate their ordeal.</div>

During this attack, a compound full of small business people who barely make a living out of their trade was their target, LEADERSHIP Weekend learnt as firewood sellers, hair stylists, salespersons and small traders were robbed and dispossessed of their belongings.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Victims said, in 2015 alone, dare devil robbers visited three times and in their recent attack, they didn’t just rob but came with a vacation notice to some of the residents. "You people are undesirable elements in our midst, so leave," was the message from the robbers.</div>

A victim, who simply gave her name as Rose told LEADERSHIP Weekend that she was told to vacate the area by the robbers who promised to visit again and threatened to shoot her dead if she refused to move out.</div>

"After collecting my phones, money and that of my sister, one of them told me that my time is up in the area and I should leave as I am an undesirable element in the community. I am very scared and preparing to relocate immediately," Rose said.</div>

Another victim of the attack, Silas Achadu, told LEADERSHIP Weekend that after three attacks in six months, his sisters have fled the area as they are also on the warning list as 'undesirables'.</div>

"It is very unusual to be robbed in one house three times in six months. This people want to kill us and the message is very clear, ‘relocate or you die.’ The residents of this area are helpless," Achadu lamented.</div>

Other residents who spoke with LEADERSHIP Weekend wondered why hoodlums would determine who stays in a community that belongs to all. They decried the activities of the group, stating that their activities constitute a grave danger to life and property in the neighbourhood.</div>

They equally called on the government of Nasarawa State to come to their aid to avoid further destruction of property.</div>

Findings by LEADERSHIP Weekend revealed that most of the attacks on residents have been largely unreported owing to fear of further targets by the hoodlum, who carefully select their targets.</div>

When LEADERSHIP Weekend visited the Mai Koroduma Palace, Alhaji Ahmadu Bako admitted the prevalence of robbery incidents in his domain but was not aware that some residents have been handpicked and asked to vacate the community by robbers.</div>

Bako, who was not happy with the victims who have not reported the incidences to the palace for action, noted that the palace have been working with the police to combat the wave of robberies in the community.</div>

When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer in New Nyanya, Karu, told LEADERSHIP Weekend that the division is handicapped with lack of operational vehicles. She said the division is still trying to source for fund to fix a damaged patrol van after a recent gun duel with robbers where two of her men were injured.</div>

She however blamed the residents for not coming to the police to complain after being attacked in the past.</div>

The crime wave in Karu local government in recent times is getting many residents scared as a day hardly passes without a robbery incident. LEADERSHIP Weekend was told that taxis are often used at nights especially from 10pm to rob unsuspecting passengers returning from work. Popularly known as one chance, criminals who disguised as passengers often dispossess innocent people of their belongings.</div>

<b>JOS, NIGERIA - A security guard on Sunday averted what would have been a high casualty from a bomb planted at a church in Plateau State.</b></div>

The ECWA church was filled with worshippers when the private security guard spotted the bomb at the entrance, witnesses said.</div>

The guard picked the bomb and threw it off the church before it exploded instantly. No one was killed from the explosion, although the guard sustained injuries on the leg and is currently being treated, a worshipper said.</div>

Another witness said the police anti-bomb squad, on arrival, discovered another explosive device that was planted at the restroom of the church.</div>

The ECWA church in Tudunwa is located near the Federal Secretariat in Jos, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.</div>

Meanwhile, the police have also said no one was killed from the explosion. The police spokesperson in Plateau, Abuh Emmanuel, told <b><a href="http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/186527-update-guard-averts-mass-casualty-from-jos-church-explosion.html">PREMIUM TIMES</a></b> that anti-bomb experts have been deployed to the scene.</div>

“Experts have been sent there immediately to ascertain those who planted the explosion, and possibly, the manufacturers of the device. But I was told no one died in the incident,” he said.</div>

The Sunday explosion occurred one week after a similar explosion at a Redeemed Church in Yobe State claimed many lives.</div>

<b>KADUNA, NIGERIA - Wonders, they say, shall never end. Or, how else does one describe a situation where a young medical doctor who died in a motor accident on the way to his wedding on October 10, 2013 withdrew about ₦4.3m from his own account in Union Bank in Kaduna few weeks after his death? Information from the bank indicated that the dead man used the ATM card to make the withdrawals.</b></div>

A new twist emerged when the dead man applied for an ATM card from his bank and used it to clear his account. A family source said: </div>

When Chidiebere died, we discovered that his mobile telephone number had been blocked. We were surprised because no member of our family told the GSM service provider that Chidiebere had died. So, we took up the matter and it took some time before the line was reactivated. </div>

We got the shock of our lives after reactivating the line. As soon as we switched on the phone, we began to receive alerts of withdrawals from his account. All the withdrawals were made after he had died and had been buried. During his life time, he did not use ATM cards but in death, he applied for ATM card from the bank in Kaduna and started withdrawing all the money in his account. Worse still, Chidiebere was not the owner of all the money in the account. One of his brothers who went abroad in search of greener pastures was sending money to Chidiebere to keep for him. Now, the brother is back and Chidiebere's corpse had withdrawn all the money as the bank wants us to believe.</div>

It was learnt that the family has contacted the bank on the strange withdrawals but it has been prevaricating over the issue.</div>

This is really a new one in the realm of suicides, as a 70-year old woman, Saratu Rahman, aka Iya Ogbomoso, from Offa, in Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State, who used a razor blade to slash her throat, made a confessional statement on tape where she stated:</div>

I used a razor blade to cut my throat because God told me to do so. Please allow me to die; I don’t want to live in this world again.</blockquote>

According to a <b><a href="http://pulse.ng/gist/in-gods-name-70-yr-old-woman-commits-suicide-by-slashing-her-throat-id3923880.html">Pulse</a></b> report, the septuagenarian mother of four was said to have killed herself at her residence.</div>

A neighbour of the Rahmans, said when she and other neighbours heard the woman's screams, they rushed to her room and saw her in a pool of blood.</div>

When we got into the room, we saw Mama in a pool of blood. We invited the police. She was rushed to the Lamode Hospital. The policemen later found the blade that Mama used to cut herself.</div>

He has consequently directed his legal team to vigorously enforce his rights to protect his reputation from the vandalism of irresponsible hacks.</b></div>

<i>The Union </i>chose to write a spurious story alleging ₦90b as his assets declaration without seeing the declaration made by Malam El Rufai.</div>

The circle of blackmail that did the story claimed they heard a rumour, and they pursued the rumour so vigorously they transformed it into news. When some of their cohorts made contact with the governor’s media team insisting that they respond to rumour, they were told that it is better if they chose the more legitimate route of agitating for a public asset declaration.</div>

Fair minded people who read the story will notice that it is not grounded in any evidence. It is just the animus of blackmailers who regard Malam Nasir El-Rufai as easy prey. But since his reputation is not based on purchased kudos, he cannot be compelled into accommodation with venal people masquerading as journalists.</div>

Malam Nasir El-Rufai is a privileged Nigerian. He qualified as a chartered Quantity Surveyor early in life and became a dollar millionaire in his twenties. Secondly, the house is not completed so how do I start rushing to a place that has not been completed. Another thing is that the amount used in building that government house is very ridiculous and so we put it as a matter for consideration. </div>

He warned that if Muazu and his team refused to throw in the towel now "the actual change will come in March 2016 when we will elect new leaders at the national convention of our party."</div>

<b>The Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has urged a Federal High Court in Lagos to place a debt recovery suit filed against the Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr Doyin Okupe and two others on an undefended list.</b></div>

NDIC, who is the Liquidator of defunct Gulf Bank Nigeria Plc, made the application following alleged failure of Okupe and other defendants in the eight year old case to file their defence.</div>

Apart from the president's aide, other defendants in the case are: an investment company, Value Trust Investment Limited, and a Director of the company Ray Ahazie.</div>

NDIC in a statement of claim filed on its behalf by its counsel, Dr Abiodun Layonu, alleged that the defendants were granted a credit facility in October 2000, by Gulf Bank Plc, to finance the importation of 10,000 metric tonnes of rice for onward delivery to the Bayelsa State government in the sum of ₦448 million vide an offer letter dated 27 October 2000, and that the terms and conditions of the offers and acceptance were later formalised in a memorandum of agreement duly signed and stamped by the bank and defendants.</div>

The plaintiff (NDIC) averred that in securing the facility granted the defendants, the Bayelsa state government through its banker, Societe Generale Bank granted a bank guarantee in contract sum of ₦500 million in favour of Gulf Bank and in further securing the facility, the Investment company’s directors, Dr Okupe and Ahaze, entered into joint and several guarantee to pay full amount granted in favour of the Gulf Bank.</div>

The bank also by way of security has a lien on the shipping documents in respect of the goods financed.</div>

NDIC further stated that when the ship carrying the 10,000 metric tonnes of rice arrived Nigerian territorial water on December 28, 2000, it could not berth at Apapa Port until January 03, 2001, because the port was congested and that the ship arrived Port Harcourt territorial water on July 26, 2001, but refused to berth on the ground that the shipping agency fee $155,000, (about ₦18.6 million) had not been paid.</div>

Upon enquiry, the Nigeria's representative of the shipping company, Koda International Nigeria Limited, informed Gulf Bank that a bill of $155,000 had been sent to the first defendant, Value Trust Investment Limited, for settlement as per the agreement between the investment company and the oversea supplier, Luck Rice International.</div>

That when it appears that the investment company could not come up with the $155,000 USD, forming the shipping agency fees, Gulf Bank decided to pay the fee to Koda International Nigeria Limited.</div>

NDIC further averred that when Bayelsa state government reneged on its promise to take the rice, Gulf Bank was forced to commence an open market sale of the rice.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
At the end of the sale, Gulf Bank was only able to realise the sum of ₦454,574,150 in the account resulting in a difference of ₦70,425,850 between the initial overdrawn position of ₦525 million in Value Trust Investment Limited account, and the difference has been attracting interest since 2001.</div>

Sometimes in September 2005, it had a meeting with the defendants at the Ikoyi office of Economic and financial crime commission (EFCC) with a view to resolving the indebtedness of the defendants.</div>

It was agreed in its letter dated September 21, 2005 to waive the sum of ₦196,642,996.08 from the outstanding debt of ₦240,811,060.59, thereby repayment due to Gulf Bank stood at ₦44,168,064.51 and sequel to the meeting at the EFCC office in September 2005, the defendants were only able to pay the sum of ₦10 million leaving the outstanding balance unpaid in the sum of ₦34,168,064.51.</div>

However the defendants have refused, neglected and failed to liquidate their indebtedness despite repeated demand on same despite the fact that the defendants have admitted owing the aforesaid debt, as this was evidenced in their letter dated February 15, 2006.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Consequently, NDIC is claiming the sum of ₦34,168,064.51 being the agreed outstanding indebtedness of the defendants; and interest on the said sum at the rate of 21 per cent per annum until the final liquidation of the said sum. It is also claiming the cost of instituting this legal action.</div>

When the matter came up for hearing, the NDIC lawyer, Oburume Ayeteno told the court that he has filed an application to place the suit on undefended list which he was ready to argue.</div>

But Okupe’s counsel, Yemi Gbonegun objected on the ground that he had filed a statement of defence on behalf of the defendants but the statement of defence which the plaintiff had file a reply to cannot be traced in the court’s file, consequently he needed time to reproduce the said statement of the defence.</div>

<b>Wife of the President, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, on Tuesday denied media reports that her plan to host the 8th Summit of the African First Ladies Peace Mission on Friday is designed to deny the wife of the President-elect, Hajia Aisha Buhari, the opportunity of becoming the President of the mission.</b></div>

Mrs. Jonathan, who is the current President, had summoned a meeting of the mission during which new executive members are expected to emerge.</div>

Media reports had it that the election would have been held in July but the President’s wife brought it back to May to allow her successor to emerge before her husband will cease to be President from May 29.</div>

But a statement by Mr. Ayo Adewuyi, on Tuesday said there was no truth in the reports.</div>

Adewuyi explained that Mrs. Jonathan was elected President in July 2012 and was meant to serve for two years, according to the group’s internal regulation.</div>

He further said that while her tenure ought to have ended in 2014, when a fresh election should have held, the President’s wife drew the attention of her colleagues to the then forthcoming election in Nigeria, which preparation would not enable her host the summit.</div>

According to him, Mrs. Jonathan therefore proposed that the summit should hold after the general elections, and it was accordingly agreed that it should be held in July 2015.</div>

Adewuyi however added that there was an understanding among members that if President Goodluck Jonathan did not succeed in his re-election bid, the President’s wife would convene the summit in May to enable the election of a new President and ensure a smooth handover since her tenure has ended.</div>

<b>The PUNCH</b> correspondent gathered that the applicants were initially required to fill an online application form after which they got confirmation that the corporation had shortlisted them among "successful" applicants.</div>

The letter of confirmation read in part: "Dear applicant, we wish to inform you that your resume application has been observed, processed and approved. You have been stated for listing and recruitment.</div>

"Contact our Human Resources Manager on +2348138375214 for directives, information, interview details and the purchase of recruitment application form and deadline for submission.</div>

Also, management will not be held responsible for disapproval of application due to inability to relocate or change residence to Abuja. Details to be filled in the form by the applicant include name, address, sex, state of origin, phone number, date of birth, email and qualification. Each of the forms was purportedly signed by the corporation’s chief engineer (evaluation unit) and the director-general.</div>

When contacted, the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division of the NNPC, Mr. Ohi Alegbe, said the corporation was not recruiting at the moment.</div>

Addressing State House correspondents after the meeting of the council, Gov. Gabriel Suswam of Benue State disclosed that the approval of the template was meant to ensure uniformity in subsequent transitions in the country.</div>

“The Council decided that, henceforth, there has to be a template that successive transitions will follow. We never had it, this is the first time that one is going to be developed so that subsequently there is no speculation as to what needs to be done, everything is in a template.</div>

“Yes, if there is a transition whether is the same party to the same party, they follow the same template. If it is from one party to another party, the same template, this is the first time that it is being developed; you notice or recall that we never really have a template as what to follow, how we go about our transition.</div>

“But what is going to happen this time around is going to be permanent for successive transitions.’’</div>

Also addressing the correspondents on the outcome of the meeting, Gov. Babangida Aliyu of Niger said arrangements had been concluded for the smooth May 29 inauguration of the incoming retired Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.</div>

He said invitations were extended to all Heads of States and Governments within and outside African continent to enable them to witness the event.</div>

Aliyu said similar invitations were also extended to Prime Ministers of the G8, multilateral heads like the United Nations and the Commonwealth.</div>

According to him, the council newly approved template for the May 29 inauguration indicates that President Jonathan on May 28 will take the incoming President and the Vice-President on tour of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.</div>

“For activities on the template for this one, we said the May 22 will be for the Friday Prayer, May 24 will be Sunday Service, May 28 will be for both handing over of documents as well as dinner and May 29 apart from the inauguration, there will be a luncheon and there will be a gala night."</div>

Aliyu stated that the Council frowned at the culture of "African time", saying such behaviour would not be entertained during the inauguration and beyond.</div>

He said the council of state meeting would be the last under President Jonathan's administration.</div>

The meeting, which was presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan, was attended by Vice-President Namadi Sambo, Senate President David Mark, Speaker of the House of Representatives Aminu Tambuwal, all former Heads of State and Presidents, Chief Justice of the Federation and former Chief Justices of the Federation and State Governors. </div>
