</div><br></b></div><div><b>LAGOS, NIGERIA - Two days after the National Peace Committee met with President Muhammadu Buhari and cautioned him on the probe of the immediate past administration, the president’s party has risen in his support.</b><br></div><div><br></div><div>The ruling All Progressives Congress, in seeming reference to the committee members, asked opinion leaders to ensure that their actions and utterances do not give comfort to those who looted the commonwealth of the country.</div><div><br></div><div>Some members of the peace committee, headed by former military ruler, Abdulsalam Abubakar, include the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar; the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Ayo Oritsejafor; and prominent Catholic cleric, Matthew Kukah.</div><div><br></div><div>Speaking after the committee met Mr. Buhari, Mr. Kukah said although the leaders were not in support of corruption, they were worried about the process.</div><div><br></div><div>“I think what we are concerned about is process,” he said. “It is no longer a military regime and, under our existing laws, everybody is innocent until proven guilty.</div><div><br></div><div>“Again, our own commitment is not to intimidate or fight anybody. The former President’s commitment and what he did still remains spectacular and I think that President Buhari himself appreciates that.”</div><div><br></div><div>However, on Thursday, the APC, in a statement issued in Lagos by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, warned against any attempt to truncate the ongoing fight against corruption in the country. It expressed total support for President Buhari’s determination to end the scourge in the country.</div><div><br></div><div>It appealed to all Nigerians, especially opinion leaders, to ensure that their actions and utterances do not give comfort to those who looted the commonwealth of the country.</div><div><br></div><div>“Our party promised Nigerians change, but the change that we promised and which Nigerians desire so much cannot be achieved if we allow the resources that belong to all Nigerians to be appropriated by a few.</div><div><br></div><div>“How do we upgrade our decayed infrastructure and provide jobs for our people when the money meant for that has been embezzled by a few?</div><div><br></div><div>“President Buhari has promised to break the vicious cycle of corruption that has held Nigeria down.</div><div><br></div><div>“How can he do that if he allows those who have looted the treasury to escape justice, and then use their ill-gotten wealth to fight the government?</div><div><br></div><div>“How can he do that if he turns a blind eye to the monumental cases of corruption in all sectors?</div><div><br></div><div>“We know that fighting corruption in a society where the cankerworm has eaten deep into its fabric will not be easy. We know that corruption will always fight back.</div><div><br></div><div>“But there is no other choice than to confront and destroy this monster once and for all, lest it destroys Nigeria,” it said.</div><div><br></div><div>The party said the President’s sincerity of purpose could be seen from his statement that any of his party members who was found to be corrupt would not escape justice.</div><div><br></div><div>“Therefore, those who are shouting themselves hoarse by saying the Buhari Administration’s fight against corruption is selective or is a distraction, are only seeking to sabotage the epic battle.</div><div><br></div><div>“If they have any case of corruption against any member of the APC, they should forward their evidence to the appropriate anti-corruption agency,’’ it said.</div><div><br></div><div>The party said that the danger in truncating the fight against corruption was that it would consign Nigeria to poverty, insecurity and unemployment in perpetuity.</div><div><br></div><div>“That is why we are restating our unalloyed support for the President, and urging him not to be deterred or distracted by those hiding under sophistry to weaken the fight.</div><div><br></div><div>“We are glad that most Nigerians have lent their support to the government’s fight against corruption, going by their interventions on the Social Media, which has now become a people’s parliament of sorts.</div><div><br></div><div>“We urge them not to relent in their support, irrespective of the antics of the naysayers,” it said.</div><div><br></div>

Violence has again broken out in Ojoku in the Oyun Local Government Area of Kwara State over an alleged "escape" of a murder suspect from police custody.</div>

According to information reaching <b><i>tnn</i></b>, a youth leader and politician in the community who was among suspects arrested by the police in February over the political violence in which two people were killed was said to have escaped from police custody and was nowhere to be found. A reliable source informed <b><i>tnn</i></b> that they learned that Olatunji Usman has escaped from police custody and his whereabouts could not be known.</div>

Recall that Usman was among suspects arrested by the police after the political violence of February 20 in which two people said to be members of the APC were killed, many others injured and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed. </div>

Youths in the community, mostly suspected to be members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), embarked on what started like a peaceful protest to the palace of the traditional ruler of the community to register their displeasure over the unconfirmed reports that Usman had escaped from the police. Trouble, however, started when another group said to be mostly of members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Part (PDP) staged a counter protest to denounce the allege escape of Usman from the police.</div>

As the violent raged, Usman's wife, Shakirat was said to have taken to her heels when it became obvious that the anti-Usman group was heading to her house. As at the time of filing this report, the whereabouts of Shakirat were unknown.</div>

Meanwhile, efforts of our correspondent to confirm the development have not yielded any results as calls to the mobile number of the Force PRO in Kwara indicated the phone was switched off.</div>

Trouble makers and political thugs will henceforth have no hiding place in Kwara State. This was disclosed by the Commissioner of Police in charge of Kwara State Command, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun during an on-the-spot assessment after the political crisis in Ojoku on Wednesday.</div>

It will be recalled that violent broke out in Ojoku on Wednesday during a political campaign rally during which two people were killed and dozens others injured with properties worth millions of naira destroyed. Trouble started when an armed group of youths attacked the campaign train of the APC senatorial candidate for Kwara South, Architect Lola Ashiru who was leading his campaign train to the palace of the traditional ruler of the community. During the attack by persons suspected to be supporters of the PDP senatorial candidate who is from Ojoku, Senator Rafiu Ibrahim, two people were killed and many others injured including Ashiru who escaped death by the whiskers.</div>

Egbetokun said arrests have been made and a manhunt has been launched for other suspects who are on the run. Among those arrested, according to the police, was Kasim Omole who was said to be the arrow head of the attack. Others are Segun Ologunebi, Semiu Lawal, Olatunji Usman, Racheal Ogunde and Seun Kolapo. He said all suspects arrested would be charged to court as soon as investigations were concluded.</div>

The police commissioner, however, assured residents of the community to go about with their normal legal businesses without fear as his men are on top of the situation.<br />

<b>Stop intimidating our members - PDP</b><br />

Meanwhile, the opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has asked the police to stop intimidating its members by the spurious arrests being made. The party stated this in a release made available to newsmen in Ilorin following the arrest of some political thugs and troublemakers by the police over recent political violence in Ojoku in the Oyun Local Government Area of the State.</div>

According to the Kwara State publicity secretary of  the PDP, Mr. Tunde Ashaolu, the police are intimidating their members with the arrest as he said there have been a reduction in the turnout of the party members and supporters since the police began what he called "spurious arrests". Ashaolu said the arrest was spurious because most of his party members arrested had no hands in the violence at Ojoku. He specifically mentioned the name of Olatunji Usman who he said was not in Kwara State on the day of the incident as a case study.</div>

He appealed to the police to investigate those so far arrested and release those who are "innocent like Usman".</div>

<b>ABEOKUTA, NIGERIA - Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said there is no alternative to President Muhammadu Buhari or his leadership style because of the peculiar period in the country's life.</b></div>

He urged Nigerians to support Buhari to bring about the desired “change” in the country.</div>

Obasanjo noted that a lot of things that were left undone in the last six years are hurting the country today but said there is a ray hope in the government of President Buhari that the expected change for the better would soon come.</div>

The former President made this declaration at the weekend when a delegation of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), led by the Vice President, Ogunkunade Oluwatoyin, visited him at his residence on Presidential Hilltop Estate, Abeokuta, Ogun State.</div>

Obasanjo who is a former Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before quitting party politics early this year, said he stuck out his neck for change during the last general elections because things were no longer going the way it ought to be for the country.</div>

The former president spoke in response to the demands of the students, particularly as it concerns fighting corruption, security, economy, unemployment and improvement in the standard of education.</div>

He noted that God loves Nigeria and that he would continue to support and pray for the success of President Buhari and his administration.</div>

Obasanjo said:</div>

I will underline what I regard as the most important right now which is key that deals with almost all the points that you raised and that is the issue of leadership. I believe very sincerely that God loves this country. </blockquote>

I have said it on a number of occasions that when you go through the history of this country, particularly during the pre-independence and how many times we have gone through difficult times but we have not fallen over, you would say like I have said over a number of times that God really loves this country. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">
And the general elections you talked about is a typical section of it, many people believe that after that election there will be no more Nigeria, many had even sent their families abroad, to some of us there is no where we can live abroad they will say you with all your mouth that you were running so you can even run out of Nigeria and come here. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">
I have nowhere else that I can go and live in except Nigeria. Some said that they know the NADECO route but I do not know the route and I do not want to know it. So God did it almost miraculously and the election took place although some did not want it to take place but it took place. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">
And some did help in no small measure to make sure that we got what God has destined for Nigeria. But in the first instance, we must give thanks to God and in the second instance we must thank those that made sure that we had a change and a credible change and the relative peace that we enjoyed before, during and after the election.</blockquote>

The former president continued:</div>

The issue of good leadership which was what many of us were clamouring for. There is no angel, for me there is no messiah except Jesus Christ, but there are leaders who are concerned about what is happening in this country, leaders that are so passionate about this country and who are ready to stick out their necks for this country and God has given us such an individual as the President of the country. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">
What has happened is an indication that change has come and that our dreams may come true. But all that is required of everyone, young and old, youths and even students is to give unalloyed support to the government and where we believe that we should give criticism that is objective and positive we should give. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">
For me these points that you have made about what is going on in this country, about corruption, about the economy, about security, we all know these and that is why some of us prepared to stick out our neck to achieve change because most of these things have not been addressed for the past six years. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">
And how can anybody tell us that they will be addressed the next four years but now we have seen a ray of hope, so I will say let us encourage where we need to encourage, let us be objective where we need to be objective, let us show solidarity where we need to show solidarity.</blockquote>

He added that nobody is too young or too old to give meaningful contribution, "even what you are doing here is part of it, but do not limit it here, let us take it to them, those at the Senate, House of Representatives, those at the state level, men and women of goodwill in this country.”</div>

According to him: </div>

God forbid that this present democratic dispensation should fail, because we have no other alternative and that is why I said that the present administration should succeed there is no excuse and that is why I am so concerned about the success of this administration. </blockquote>

Say whatever you like about me, I pray and I will work for the success of this government. There is no alternative to democracy, the alternative to democracy is even worse than the imperfection of democracy.</blockquote>

Going down memory lane, the former president said: </div>

I am a victim of military regime, I was put in jail and meant to be killed (by the Sani Abacha regime). If there was democracy there might have  been fair amount of trial. So I heard you, I note your request and as time goes by when I do have opportunity in the community of leaders when you want me to pass your message, I will deliver your message. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">
But one of the things that gives me great concern is youth employment, there is no employment for the youths in this country. Somebody told me that we can admit about seven thousand students in a year but those who seek admission into the university probably double that number. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">
We need to be mindful of job creation and wealth creation, it does not matter what university you attended, you must be mindful that job creation and wealth creation to the next generation. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">
If you don\t have a target about the actions that you are about to take then you do not have anything to work up to. I believe that having a target is necessary.  Let me give the history of the Nigeria’s civil war. Multiple sources have said that contrary to his public posturing of defiance, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, had started reaching out to some of the aggrieved leaders of the party.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Saraki is one of the gladiators in the clash of egos and wills that followed the Senate leadership election on June 9 and subsequent appointment of principal officers.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Senate President had earlier visited former President Olusegun Obasanjo to help him beg President Muhammadu Buhari.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He also reportedly met with the Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, on the same matter.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
During the week, some emissaries sent by Saraki met with President Buhari and sought forgiveness for the Senate President for acting contrary to the dictates of the party.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The emissaries included Senate Leader Ali Ndume, Senator Kabiru Gaya, Senator Adamu Aliero, Senator Danjuma Goje, and Senator Abdullahi Adamu.</div>

A report in a national daily on Saturday also said the emissaries apologised to the President for the individual roles they played in the crisis.</div>

However, sources in the party said on Saturday that the emissaries also had a brief to meet with the party's national leader and former Governor of Lagos State, Senator Bola Tinubu.</div>

Many within the party see the crisis as a battle of wills with Buhari, Tinubu and some party leaders on one side of the ring and the Senate President and his backers on the other side. One of the prominent APC leaders that is believed to have backed Saraki is former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.</div>

But sources told <b><a href="http://www.punchng.com/news/saraki-eats-humble-pie-reaches-out-to-tinubu/">The Punch</a></b> correspondent that Saraki, of recent, had made strenuous efforts to meet and appeal to Tinubu to sheathe his sword.</div>

<i>The Punch </i>correspondents report that Saraki's olive branch to Tinubu may mark a turning point in the crisis as the Senate President, before now, had insisted that he would not 'beg' the APC leader.</div>

But the sources added that Saraki might have changed his position when all his efforts to get President Buhari to forgive him for his defiance to the party and move on had been rebuffed.</div>

It has been widely reported that Buhari has refused all entreaties to host the Senate President at the Presidential Villa since the controversial election in the senate. The President had also said the leadership of the senate should tow the party line.</div>

Two APC officials who spoke to <i>The Punch </i>correspondent yesterday shed light on Saraki's last two attempts to reach out to the APC national leader. They said that one attempt occurred three weeks ago while the other took place on Thursday in Abuja.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
"Three weeks ago he tried to get across to Tinubu through one of his aides. Of course, the aide couldn't have arranged the meeting. Tinubu's disposition to the matter is well known," the source said.</div>

The APC national leader, sources said, had told some of Saraki's emissaries in the past that the senate leadership should toe the party line.</div>

Another source said the last attempt took place during the week when the APC senators, who met with the President at the behest of Saraki, also tried to get across to Tinubu. A source close to Tinubu said while the former Lagos Governor was aware of the move, his position on the matter had not changed.</div>

The source stated that Saraki needed a long-term strategy to pacify the aggrieved party leaders, adding that the Senate President is perceived as haughty by some of these leaders.</div>

"It is a surprise that he is reaching out to Tinubu. Saraki has no respect for Tinubu. He is contemptuous of him. During meetings he refers to him contemptuously as 'Bola'. In fact there was a time that Tinubu wanted to explain a point to him and he shut him up," the source said.</div>

The source may have alluded to the cultural norm in Tinubu and Saraki's Yoruba ethnic group where an elder is not addressed by his first name. Tinubu is 63 while Saraki is 52.</div>

But the source close to the APC leader insisted that the national leader had no 'ego problem' with Saraki.</div>

"Tinubu's take is that the senate should toe the party line. It is not a personal problem at all. If it were a personal problem, the President won't be reacting the same way."</div>

The National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mr. Lai Mohammed told one of <i>The Punch </i>correspondents on Saturday that the APC believes in party supremacy.</div>

He said: "I can't comment on the story you are asking me about. However, the APC has made its position on party supremacy known."</div>

The APC in a mega rally scheduled for the Samson Siasia Sports Complex and which would have in attendance Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; National Chairman, Chief John Odigie Oyegun, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Rotimi Amaechi, Chief Timipre Sylva and Governors elected on the party's platform is expected to receive founding members of the PDP in the Bayelsa State into its fold.</div>

<b><a href="http://sunnewsonline.com/new/dont-defect-to-apc-jonathan-group-beg-bayelsa-pdp-bigwigs/">Saturday Sun</a></b> investigations revealed that the list of the defectors which include PDP big wigs like, Chief Timi Alaibe, former Deputy Governor Werinipre Seibarugu, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Senator Clever Ikisikpo, Hon Nadu Karibo, Hon Warman Ogoriba, Hon Gini Angaye, former Speaker Nestor Binabo, Senator John Brambiafa, Hon Stella Dorgu, former lawmakers, and former commissioners in the PDP government in the state had rattled Jonathan and the leadership of the party.</div>

Jonathan who is said to be worried about the crisis rocking the party in the state which has forced some founding members to leave the party decided to personally intervene to stop the defection which is considered a huge loss to the party in the state.</div>

He was said to have placed calls to some of the defectors especially his political associates to see whether he could convince them not to go ahead with their planned defection but many of them told him that they have made up their minds to join the APC.</div>

The PDP Unity group made up of political associates of Jonathan and his wife, Patience, also pleaded with their members not to defect to the APC.</div>

The Coordinator of the group, Mrs. Maria Ebikake in a press conference begged them not to abandon the party which they all contributed to build.</div>

Ebikake who frowned at some PDP members hurling hate speeches at the defectors said they should desist from such act as it would not augur well for the party.</div>

<b>IJEBU-ODE, NIGERIA - The late Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuade's role in the aftermath of the annulment of the 1993 presidential election is widely thought to have been less than noble. In <i>Awujale</i>, the recently released autobiography of Oba Sikiru Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, Sijuade's connivance with those who annulled the election is brought into sharp focus.</b></div>

His position as the most revered traditional ruler in Yorubaland has not innoculated Oba Okunade Sijuade Olubuse II, the Ooni of Ife, from public scorn. Since 1993, much of the mystique around him has been eroded, largely through the carnage sparked by the controversial annulment of the 1993 presidential election, a.k.a June 12. Oba Sijuade came out of the annulment saga with grave reputational injuries from which he is yet to, and may not, recover, given the decision of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, to re-invite public attention to Sijuwade's role in one of the most grotesque episodes in Yoruba and Nigerian history.</div>

The medium chosen by Oba Adetona is <i><b>Awujale</b></i>, his recently released autobiography, in which the 11th chapter is dedicated to the annulment and the struggle for the de-annulment of the election won by the late Chief M.K.O Abiola.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
In <b><i>Awujale</i></b>, Adetona presents what can hardly be described as a worm's eye view. And in the book, the Ooni does not come out smelling like roses. As one of the most prominent Yoruba traditional rulers, Adetona was regularly invited to meetings with General Ibrahim Babangida, the military president that annulled the election and installed an Interim National Government, ING, headed by Chief Ernest Shonekan.</div>

As the widespread anger provoked by the annulment and Babangida's ING contraption raged, the former military president hoped to limit the damage to his reputation and that of his government, appealing to leaders from all the country's geo-political zones, especially the South-West, which felt wounded because of Abiola.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
For one of those meetings in Abuja, writes Adetona in <i><b>Awujale</b></i>, he arrived on a Thursday. The meeting was to hold the next day. While in his hotel room on the day of arrival, Adetona called the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, to say that there was a need for a meeting of Yoruba traditional rulers, where they could arrive at a common position to be presented at the next day's meeting with Babangida. Adeyemi agreed. Adetona then suggested that there was also a need to inform the Ooni and asked Adeyemi to accompany him to Sijuwade's room.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Adeyemi, however, was not keen because of the rivalry, over superiority, between him and the Ooni. Eventually, he gave in. The late Oba Adeyinka Oyekan, Oba of Lagos, was also informed. He agreed that a meeting was required, but refused to accompany them to the Ooni's suite. However, he said he would support whatever position the meeting adopted.</div>

In the Ooni's suite, Adetona and Adeyemi met the Ife monarch dining with (now late) Alhaji Ado Bayero, Emir of Kano. Another Yoruba monarch, Oba Frederick Aroloye, the Owa of Idanre, writes Adetona, sat in a corner. When the two dining monarchs finished their meals, they went into the Ooni's room for a discussion, after which the Ooni came out to meet Adetona and Adeyemi.</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">
When we told the Ooni the purpose of our meeting, he said he had met the Northern Emirs. Their position was the same as ours. We asked how and he said that they wanted a fresh meeting to be called of the Council of State along with us. The Council of State, as enshrined in the constitution, has powers to advise the President, Adetona writes.</blockquote>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But what the Northern traditional rulers wanted was not exactly what the Yoruba monarchs wanted.</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">
Our mandate from the Yorubas was that the election had been concluded and our son was clearly the winner. So, all we wanted was that they should just simply release the results, the author explains.</blockquote>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Adetona then insisted that if a Council of State meeting was to be called, it should be for the purpose of ensuring that the election was de-annulled and the wish of the people respected. The Ooni agreed. But the Alaafin, writes Adetona, said there was no need for another meeting because the key members of the Council had already expressed their opposition to the annulment.</div>

When Adetona and the Alaafin left the Ooni, they went to discuss seating arrangements for the next day's meeting with the other Yoruba traditional rulers. Apparently suspicious that the Ooni could switch positions, the monarchs agreed that they would sit in a way that would ensure that the Ife monarch was hemmed between two of them "so as to forestall any wavering of position".</div>

The planned sitting arrangement was foiled. As the traditional rulers walked into the venue of the meeting, they found seats that bore each attendee's name. Babangida came in, explained the position of the government and sought reactions from his audience. The first came from Ibrahim Dasuki, then Sultan of Sokoto, who said very little apart from accusing the government of using traditional rulers to quell crises brought upon the nation by the government itself.</div>

He suggested that Babangida should invite members of the Council of State to join the traditional rulers in the discussion of the annulment. The Ooni was the next to speak and presented the position of the Yoruba obas: declaration of Abiola as the winner.</div>

It was something the meeting had not expected. "You could have heard a pin drop", writes Adetona. Next was Bayero, who expressed no opposition to what the Ooni said, but called for a fresh Council of State meeting. After him spoke the Oba of Benin, who condemned the annulment and rejected calls for a Council of State meeting.</div>

The natural rulers continued turning the heat on Babangida. According to Adetona, Gbong Gwon Jos, the late Chief Fom Bot, told the meeting that he could not return to his domain if Babangida did not to de-annul the election, as his subjects had demanded, and asked the former president to find accommodation for him in Abuja. A traditional ruler from the South-East, Adetona writes, was more dramatic, telling Babangida to quit as president. "Please go. Please go", he shouted.</div>

Then Babangida cut in, explaining that the decision to annul or de-annul was not solely his, but that of the military heirachy. He kept on calling on others to speak, but the obas observed that he was calling only people who sat to his right. The obas sat to his left. This drew a protest from the Alaafin, who Babangida was forced to ask to speak.</div>

The Oyo monarch insisted that another Council of State meeting was needless because the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, a member, was out of the country, while some other key members had expressed their disapproval of the annulment in the media. Other traditional rulers told Babangida that he should save the country from a huge crisis by respecting the wishes of Nigerians.</div>

Then, Babangida attempted one more throw of the dice. In a somewhat emotional tone, he told the meeting how close he and Abiola were. His government, he added, had paid Abiola hefty debts owed him by previous regimes. The sum, Babangida said, was about $600million. The scent of money scrambled a particular royal head - the Ooni's.</div>

When he heard this piece of information, the Ooni became angry and said something to the effect that if Babangida paid him (Ooni) that much, he would be living on the Island of Capri in Italy, Adetona writes.</blockquote>

Sijuade then got up to go to the toilet. Adetona followed, spewing criticisms at his fellow Oba for going against what the Yoruba traditional rulers had agreed on. After the meeting, watched by Uche Chukwumerije, Information Secretary in the Interim National Government, the Ooni told journalists that he was in support of Babangida's position that a fresh election should be held and that the Obas should return to their domains and tell their people to prepare for the election.</div>

Adetona thought he had not heard Ooni right. </div>

To assure myself that what I heard was true, I invited one of the reporters, who was there when the Ooni was speaking to my room. This was a reporter from <i>The Nigerian Tribune</i>. Fortunately, the Alaafin was with me when the reporter played the tape for us. We were stunned, the Awujale writes.</blockquote>

From his hotel room, the Ooni called Adetona on the intercom and announced gleefully that he had told the world (through the media) of the Yoruba position. Adetona replied that he was not sure that Sijuwade's claim was correct. Adetona, accompanied by the Alaafin and the reporter, went over to Sijuwade's room. The Ooni repeated his claim that he presented the Yoruba position to the press.</div>

He was instantly put to shame, when the reporter was asked to play his tape, which contained the opposite of Ooni's claim. Adetona and the Alaafin then pressured Ooni into granting another interview, restating the position of the Yoruba. He did and the reporter was asked to take the interview to media houses for publication the next day. The interview was published by newspapers the next day, but Chukwumerije had caused the first interview to be used on the network news of the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA.</div>

In the book, the Awujale was unsparing in his attack on former Nigerian leader, Olusegun Obasanjo. He described him as a Judas, "who would betray his people", who lacks credibility and squandered "the enormous goodwill", which he carried into office "with a performance that left him with a second term short of tangible achievements."</div>

Oba Adetona recalled an event on 24 July 2002, the late Abraham Adesanya's 80th birthday in Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State, when in a ride with Obasanjo to a makeshift helipad he told Obasanjo how disappointed he had become over Obasanjo's pussy-footing on the issue of federalism. "This was the dividing line for me in our relationship", Awujale recalled.</div>

Adesanya's birthday presented an opportunity for him to tell Obasanjo how he felt about him, when they rode together in a Mercedes Benz limousine, with former Ogun governor, Olusegun Osoba, as witness.</div>

It was going to be a short trip but I had something to say and so it had to be said quickly enough while the three of us shared some privacy. I said there was a time when I had trusted Obasanjo so much so that I could swear by his name, but that the trust was now gone. Obasanjo asked why. I answered that Obasanjo was no longer credible. </blockquote>

The Oba recalled further in the book, that at another time when he visited Obasanjo in Aso Rock, Obasanjo revisited their earlier conversation during which he told the Awujale, accusatorily, that he painted him a Judas. Awujale reconfirmed the labeling according to his account.</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">
I told him that I not only remembered but still maintained that he was a Judas who would betray his people…I had no qualms about speaking plainly to him. In high office, people who surround leaders tend to skirt around the truth, Awujale wrote.</blockquote>

The Awujale was clearly not impressed by Obasanjo's tenure as Nigeria's leader. </div>

Eight years in office was ample time to put electricity on a very strong footing. Eight years was enough to put down a strong foot against corruption and make a clear difference. Eight years was adequate for orderliness and the rule of law to triumph in every facet of our society. These were the basis upon which I gave my support for the office, he submitted.</blockquote>

<b>IBADAN, NIGERIA - Tension is reportedly mounting in the four states under the control of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-West over the refusal of the governors to put cabinets in place more than two months after their inauguration.</b></div>

The three states of Lagos, Oyo and Ogun have been operating administrative activities with skeletal appointive personnel and the civil service, 69 days after the governors' assumption of office, while Osun State has been without a cabinet for about nine months, after the re-election of Governor Rauf Aregbesola.</div>

He was sworn in for his second term on November 26, 2014.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Lagos State has appointed only the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), same with Ogun State. Osun State has SSG and Chief of Staff while Oyo State has not made any appointment.</div>

In Ogun, Osun and Oyo states, all the aides of the governors have been relieved of their appointments. Apart from Lagos, none of the governors has official media aides.</div>

The scenario in the said states is a replay of the Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari who has committed himself to piecemeal appointment of his cabinet.</div>

The issue of ministerial nominees is said to be at the heart of this wait-and-see game, with Saturday Tribune being told by sources close to the governors that they (governors) and party leaders who would make the appointments want to see those who would go to the centre before sharing what is available at home to others.</div>

The confusion reportedly created by Buhari's refusal to follow the usual practice of governors nominating appointees from states for federal positions is said to have further forced the party leaders, elders and governors to be circumspect on the appointment issue.</div>

It is reportedly being reasoned that the ruling party in the zone might witness serious unrest if certain camps and their nominees already penciled in for federal appointments eventually fail to land the projected appointments with nothing for them to fall back on at home if the major appointments are done before their projected appointments materialize at the centre.</div>

Despite the state leadership being mum on the official reason(s) for not constituting cabinets, <i>Saturday Tribune</i>'s checks revealed a deep seated frustration and disquiet among party faithful who worked for the party's victory in those states and are expecting to be rewarded with appointments.</div>

Though the list of commissioner-nominees in one of the said states is said to have been ready for a while, it could not be reportedly sent to the state House of Assembly due to political considerations occasioned by the delay from the president's end.</div>

In the said state with a super-SSG and a political leadership with a near final say, the fate of a certain projected nominee for ministerial appointment is said to be one of the major considerations, tying down the hands of the decision makers to send the compiled list to the state Assembly.</div>

Although originally a citizen of a neighbouring state, the said projected ministerial nominee once held a political appointment in the state where he is reportedly being packaged for an appointment at the centre.</div>

Those packaging him for a certain ministry in Abuja are said to be seeking a nexus between him and the projected commissioner that would hold similar position in the state.</div>

His failure at the centre could occasion a change of strategy at his adopted home state.</div>

One of those expected to be appointed a commissioner in one of the said states told <i>Saturday Tribune </i>in near exasperation that "they (the decision makers) should do what they like. I don't even really care about the whole thing again. Those who worked for the party in rain and sunshine are expecting their local leaders to get appointments for some benefits to also come to them. Everywhere is just quiet. Nobody is saying anything to anyone. They are waiting on Abuja and Abuja is not ready. Our supporters are becoming weary and unhappy. Our leaders like listening to sycophants. If they want to know what is going on now with the party, let them try and conduct local government election".</div>

In another state where the governor also won re-election, party members are reportedly miffed with the zero accessibility of the governor since he was sworn in for a second term.</div>

Over the last 16 years, they (lawmakers) have developed the system of choosing their leaders. There is no way I can directly interfere. All I can do through the party is to appeal to their conscience that what I already observed, we should go over it as soon as possible. </div>

When I say 'we', I mean the APC. We cannot win the battle and lose the war. We must not allow individual personal ambition to succeed in dividing us and allow PDP to deal with us. </div>

Briefing journalists in Abuja on Sunday, the spokesman for the group, Mr Nasir Zango-Daura, warned that members of his group would not tolerate any plans by the Speaker, Mr Yakubu Dogara, to prevent lawmakers from going into the House of Representatives chamber on Tuesday.</div>

Representative Zango-Daura also said the members of the faction were not aware of any concessions offered to them by the Speaker of the House of Representatives and his supporters.</div>

In a letter sent to the chairman of the party, Mr John Oyegun, the Speaker said the list, which took proper zoning into consideration, would best reflect the principle of federal character.</div>
