<b>Wife of the President, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, on Tuesday denied media reports that her plan to host the 8th Summit of the African First Ladies Peace Mission on Friday is designed to deny the wife of the President-elect, Hajia Aisha Buhari, the opportunity of becoming the President of the mission.</b></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mrs. Jonathan, who is the current President, had summoned a meeting of the mission during which new executive members are expected to emerge.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Media reports had it that the election would have been held in July but the President’s wife brought it back to May to allow her successor to emerge before her husband will cease to be President from May 29.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But a statement by Mr. Ayo Adewuyi, on Tuesday said there was no truth in the reports.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Adewuyi explained that Mrs. Jonathan was elected President in July 2012 and was meant to serve for two years, according to the group’s internal regulation.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He further said that while her tenure ought to have ended in 2014, when a fresh election should have held, the President’s wife drew the attention of her colleagues to the then forthcoming election in Nigeria, which preparation would not enable her host the summit.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to him, Mrs. Jonathan therefore proposed that the summit should hold after the general elections, and it was accordingly agreed that it should be held in July 2015.</div>

Adewuyi however added that there was an understanding among members that if President Goodluck Jonathan did not succeed in his re-election bid, the President’s wife would convene the summit in May to enable the election of a new President and ensure a smooth handover since her tenure has ended.</div>

The statement read in part, “Arising from the above, it is therefore clear that this is not a personal matter nor specifically a Nigeria sole affair but a continental platform governed by its own rules and protocols just as similar international organisations.</div>

<b>A network of fraudsters is currently offering fake job placements into the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to desperate and unsuspecting job seekers.</b></div>

<b>The PUNCH</b> correspondent gathered that the applicants were initially required to fill an online application form after which they got confirmation that the corporation had shortlisted them among "successful" applicants.</div>

The letter of confirmation read in part: "Dear applicant, we wish to inform you that your resume application has been observed, processed and approved. You have been stated for listing and recruitment.</div>

"Contact our Human Resources Manager on +2348138375214 for directives, information, interview details and the purchase of recruitment application form and deadline for submission.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

"Any form of indiscipline is not allowed in this recruitment process. Also, management will not be held responsible for disapproval of application due to inability to relocate or change residence to Abuja. An agreement will be signed in your recruitment form when purchased for licensed authority."</div>

It was further learnt that the unwary applicants were later told to pay a sum of ₦7,500 into an account with the United Bank for Africa (UBA) for an application form which upon completion should be returned via a specified email address within 24 hours before an interview date.</div>

Details to be filled in the form by the applicant include name, address, sex, state of origin, phone number, date of birth, email and qualification. Each of the forms was purportedly signed by the corporation’s chief engineer (evaluation unit) and the director-general.</div>

The account number is 2078728969, while the account name is Odiase James presented as the NNPC recruitment accountant.</div>

“It was during the process of payment that I discovered that it was a ruse. I refused to pay despite several calls from one of the fraudsters that my position would be given to another applicant.’’</div>

When contacted, the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division of the NNPC, Mr. Ohi Alegbe, said the corporation was not recruiting at the moment.</div>

<b>A 14-year-old girl, Jibola (pseudonym), has said she willingly had sex in a hotel on Omotolu Street, Amukoko, Lagos State, with one Abib Muftau, who had been dating her since 2014.</b></div>

The girl made the confession after the police arrested 19-year-old Muftau, for unlawfully having a carnal knowledge of her.</div>

The suspect was also accused of conniving with one other person at large, around 7pm on May 2, to detain the girl at his residence on Adejinyan Street, where he reportedly had another round of sex with her.</div>

<i>PUNCH Metro</i> gathered that the minor returned home late on the fateful day and was quizzed by her mother. It was learnt that she eventually divulged her whereabouts to the mother, who reported the incident at the Amukoko Police Station, leading to Muftau's arrest.</div>

The police said Muftau made love with Jibola sometime in October and December, 2014, without her parents' consent. It was also said he lured her into the relationship with a marriage promise.</div>

In her statement, Jibola said she and the suspect had been dating each other for eight months. She also stated that Muftau did not have sex with her under duress.</div>

She said: "I know Abib (Muftau). He lives on Adejinyan Street, Amukoko. He started dating me last year September and since our relationship started, he had made love with me twice. The first time was in a hotel on Omotolu Street, Amukoko. It was one hour he booked for and he paid ₦500. He only did it once.</div>

"In October, 2014, he had sex with me again in his room when his mother, brothers and sisters were not around. On May 2, I was in the house when he came around evening and asked me to follow him to his house."</div>

Muftau was arraigned in an Apapa Magistrate's Court on three counts bordering on unlawful sexual intercourse and abduction, which according to the police, are punishable under sections 409, 267 and 258 (2) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.</div>

The charges read in part: "That you, Abib Muftau, and one other at large on May 2, 2015, at about 7pm on Adejinyan Street, Amukoko, in the Apapa Magisterial District, did conspire to commit felony to wit; abduction.</div>

"That you, and one other person at large, on the same date, time and place, in the aforementioned magisterial district, did abduct a 14-year-old girl from lawful protection of her parents without their consent and detained her with intent to have sexual intercourse with her.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
"That you, sometime in October and December, 2014 at a hotel and at your residence on Adenjiyan Street did have sexual intercourse with Jibola with fraudulent representation that you want to marry her."</div>

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.</div>

He was admitted to bail by the presiding magistrate, Mr. P.A. Adekomaya, in the sum of ₦10,000 with one surety in like sum. The case was adjourned till May 28, 2015.</div>

<b>The police in Lagos have arrested the pastor of a Pentecostal church, Popoola Oluwasomidotun, for the death of one Waheed Majekodumi in the Ipaja area of Lagos State.</b></div>

<i><a href="http://www.punchng.com/metro-plus/police-arrest-pastor-for-mysterious-death-in-church/">PUNCH Metro</a></i> learnt that the 32-year-old victim was found dead in the church auditorium on Thursday, last week, at the Peace Estate, Baruwa, Ipaja.</div>

It was learnt that the father of four had entered the church on the fateful day, crying for help.</div>

He was said to have suddenly collapsed on the floor and died.</div>

Policemen from the Ipaja division were said to have been invited. They arrested the pastor and another member of the church, Folashade Ebun.</div>

Ebun said she was on the church premises when the deceased entered the church.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

The mother of three said the deceased, who lived in the Abule area of Ipaja and worked in a block moulding factory, had run into the church for help.</div>

She said, “That Thursday morning, I was sweeping the church auditorium in readiness for a programme. While sweeping, a man ran into the church, crying for help.</div>

"He was shouting 'pastor help me o, I will die o'. I thought someone was chasing him, but I later discovered he was alone.</div>

"He fell to the ground and I quickly called the pastor, who came in almost immediately.</div>

Twenty-seven-year old Oluwasomidotun told our correspondent he was preparing for a church meeting when Ebun, who lives in the church, called him.</div>

He said, "I am the presiding pastor of the church and I also live on the church premises. On that day, I was preparing for a programme when I heard Folashade (Ebun) shouting, ‘pastor, come and help’.</div>

“I ran into the church auditorium. I saw her standing next to a man on the ground.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

“She told me that the man ran into the church calling for help, and that he suddenly slumped and died.”</div>

The pastor said the owner of the church later advised him to report the incident to the police.</div>

The policemen, who however suspected a foul play, arrested both the pastor and Ebun.</div>

His ex-wife, who gave her name simply as Moshundat, said their marriage crashed due to his lifestyle.</div>

“I was married to Waheed for eight years and I had four children for him.</div>

Our correspondent reported that on the fateful Friday in February, the suspect called the victim in the night, saying he wanted to see him for an urgent meeting.</div>

However, he was alleged to have connived with some of the security guards on his street, who stopped the 44-year-old on his way to Afobaje’s house and hit him with a charm. He was later killed by the men.</div>

It was reported that Afobaje later emerged from his house and led the sharing of his friend's body parts.</div>

He was arrested a few days later when the police ransacked his residence and found some burnt fingers of the victim in a clay pot.</div>

His body was later found in a swamp, with the head and other parts of the body gone.</div>

The matter was later transferred from the Morogbo Police Division to the Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba.</div>

It was learnt that a security guard, identified as Tanko, who was implicated by the suspect, was later absolved and released.</div>

The charges read, “That you, Fatai Afobaje and others now at large on February 13, 2015, at about 1am at C32, Oko Agbonla, Irete Village, Magbon, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit: murder.</div>

“That you, and others now at large, did unlawfully kill one Rafiu Sulaimon, aged 44 years, by cutting off his head and hands with a knife.”</div>

The offence was said to be punishable under sections 231 and 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.</div>

His plea was not taken for the charges, just as no member of his family was in court.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The police prosecutor, ASP Elizabeth Ekuma, applied for the remand of the defendant in prison, pending legal advice.</div>

She said, “The matter before the court involves murder and we have an application for the remand of the defendant in prison.”</div>

The defence counsel, F. S. Oladele, however, asked the court to look into the case.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
He cited Section 264 of the Administration of Criminal Justice, Law of Lagos State, which he said empowered the court to go into the circumstances that surrounded the arraignment.</div>

But the magistrate shunned the defence counsel’s application.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

He said, “Section 264 is not verbose; it is very clear. The defendant is ordered to be remanded in prison.”</div>

The Prosecutor, ASP Soji Ojaokomo, told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 1 at their residence.</div>

Ojaokomo said that the accused attempted to unlawfully kill their father by jointly beating him and tying a rope around his neck.</div>

The prosecutor said that the accused confessed that they allegedly meted out the punishment on their father because he was having an affair with their late mother's friend.</div>

<b>The Police on Monday arraigned a student, Juliet Mathew (22), in an Oshodi Magistrates Court in Lagos, for allegedly stealing three phones, belonging to her boyfriend, valued at ₦90,000.</b></div>

Mathew, who resides at No. 22, Pipeline St., Iyana-Odo in Igando, near Lagos, is being tried for stealing.</div>

Olatunde said that the phones belonged to one Moses Ogundeyi.</div>

"The accused stole one Blackberry Q5 valued at ₦25,000, a Samsung X3 worth ₦45,000, a Nokia valued at ₦5,000 and one Spectranet browsing valued at ₦15,000."</div>

Olatunde said the accused, who came to pass the night in Ogundeyi's house, went away with the items.</div>

"The accused came to sleep over in the complainant's house and the following morning when the complainant went to take his bath, the accused picked his phones and ran away.</div>

"She was later arrested after a month of her disappearing with the phones."</div>

He said the accused confessed that she stole the items because she needed money urgently and that her boyfriend refused to give her.</div>

"The accused admitted stealing those items, she claimed she sold all the items at the Computer Village to one Chimezie for ₦25,000", the prosecutor added.</div>

The offence, Olatunde said, contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the offence and was granted bail in the sum of ₦50,000 with one surety in like sum.</div>

A group in the Party, under the aegis of Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, on Monday, announced the removal of Shelle as the Party’s State Chairman.</div>

It also announced the appointment of Mr Owolabi Olorunoje as Acting Chairman, saying their decision was reached after a disciplinary committee was set up to investigate some allegations levelled against Shelle.</div>

However, in a statement signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Mr Taofik Gani, the PDP called on party members to discountenance the said sack.</div>

It also admonished those behind the "preposterous action" to retrace their steps and allow peace to reign in the party.</div>

"It is therefore very irrational for anyone or persons in the party to try to create acrimony by claiming that the State Chairman has not performed to warrant continuing in office", it stated.</div>

The statement also faulted the <i>modus operandi</i> employed by "the detractors", which it said contravened the provisions of the party's constitution on the sack of a state chairman.</div>

"The State Chairman is a member of National Executive Committee (NEC) and can only be removed or suspended by the consent of the NEC.</div>

"There is no NEC approval to the action. It thus stands, null and void. For the sake of clarity, Shelle remains the legitimate chairman of PDP in the state.</div>

<b>Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has said that the National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Mu'azu, was not fully committed to ensuring victory for the PDP in the last elections.</b></div>

Fayose, while speaking on Monday during a programme on <b>Channels TV</b> titled <i>View from the Top</i>, alleged that Mu\azu had a secret meeting with the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, few days before the Ekiti governorship election.</div>

He said: "Shortly before my election, he (Mu'azu) was to see me and I waited for him in his house for about five hours and then he came out to say he was sorry and that we should give him space. "I left his house but kept a tab on him. His house is like a ring road and I came back to find out who had come to see him and the person was Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. That is the truth. Tinubu has never been to the chairman's office. I don't know where he got that from."</div>

As the race for the speakership of the House of Representatives heats up, numerous contenders, aspirants and ever pretenders to the exalted throne have emerged with their varying numbers of supporters, admirers and adherents jostling to present their respective candidates as the most suitably qualified for the plum job of presiding over 359 members drawn from cutting across all political, economic, social, religious and linguistic affiliations.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
As permutations go, a lot of alignments and re-alignments across the geopolitical divides of the nation have been formed, reformed, discarded or shored up as the major gladiators square up for advantage while forging alliances and coalitions in order to emerge triumphant, come June 4, the date of inauguration of the House of Representatives, and indeed the whole National Assembly including the Senate.</div>

While several geopolitical zones including the South West, South South, North West, North East and even North Central have indicated interest in occupying the speakership seat, many have harped on the template of equity, justice, fair play and de-marginalisation as a crucial crucible on which the selection of the House helmsman should be predicated upon, arguing that it is necessary to ensure that all parts of the country be given a sense of belonging in order to engender loyalty and unvarnished adherence to the Nigerian state among all if citizens regardless of creed, colour, tongue or geographical location.</div>

For instance, out of all the zones angling for the speakership position, it is clear that the North – East has been the most marginalised and most short-changed from independence to date and most especially since the inception of our nascent democratic dispensation, 16 years ago.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The South West has since 1999 produced the President of the Federal Republic as well as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, namely; General Olusegun Obasanjo and Hon Dimeji Bankole respectively. The South South on it’s part has produced the President of the Federal Republic, Dr Goodluck Jonathan as well as two Deputy Speakers of the House of Representatives; Chief Austin Okpara and Chief Chibudom Nwuche. The North Central Zone has also had the benefit of bringing forth the President of the Senate, Dr David Mark for a record shattering eight years, while also producing two Deputy Senate Presidents, Dr Haruna Abubakar (of blessed memory) and Dr Ibrahim Mantu from Plateau State.</div>

The North-East zone has produced the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Bayero Nafada and he served only one terms under the speakership of Rt Hon Dimeji Bankole. Even the South-East geopolitical zone which is not angling for the speakership seat has produced the Senate president for two terms though under different personalities unlike David Mark who has served out two legislative sessions.</div>

From the foregoing analysis, it is clear even to a blind man that the North East has suffered undue injustice and political oppression to compound the high rate of poverty, illiteracy and insecurity that has bedeviled the region in recent times. Successive neglect by previous and present administrations has even led to the emergence of the Boko Haram insurgency which has further crippled socio-economic activities in the region, particularly in states like Borno, Adamawa, Yobe and even Gombe and Bauchi.</div>

<b>The National Council of State on Tuesday in Abuja approved a template for the smooth inauguration of new government in Nigeria.</b></div>

The council comprises of the President, Vice President, Senate President, former Heads of State and Presidents, Chief Justice of the Federation, former Chief Justices and State Governors.</div>

Addressing State House correspondents after the meeting of the council, Gov. Gabriel Suswam of Benue State disclosed that the approval of the template was meant to ensure uniformity in subsequent transitions in the country.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
“The Council decided that, henceforth, there has to be a template that successive transitions will follow. We never had it, this is the first time that one is going to be developed so that subsequently there is no speculation as to what needs to be done, everything is in a template.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Yes, if there is a transition whether is the same party to the same party, they follow the same template. If it is from one party to another party, the same template, this is the first time that it is being developed; you notice or recall that we never really have a template as what to follow, how we go about our transition.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
“But what is going to happen this time around is going to be permanent for successive transitions.’’</div>

Also addressing the correspondents on the outcome of the meeting, Gov. Babangida Aliyu of Niger said arrangements had been concluded for the smooth May 29 inauguration of the incoming retired Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.</div>

He said invitations were extended to all Heads of States and Governments within and outside African continent to enable them to witness the event.</div>

According to him, the council newly approved template for the May 29 inauguration indicates that President Jonathan on May 28 will take the incoming President and the Vice-President on tour of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.</div>

“For activities on the template for this one, we said the May 22 will be for the Friday Prayer, May 24 will be Sunday Service, May 28 will be for both handing over of documents as well as dinner and May 29 apart from the inauguration, there will be a luncheon and there will be a gala night."</div>

Aliyu stated that the Council frowned at the culture of "African time", saying such behaviour would not be entertained during the inauguration and beyond.</div>

The incident occurred on Friday, when Olusegun Ososan was refused treatment in the hospital because he could not pay the mandatory ₦3,500.</div>

Authorities had insisted he must pay before service, a condition usually waived for staff members.</div>

In response, staff of the hospital, majority of them junior workers, staged a protest, resulting in the suspension of normal hospital services for hours.</div>

The protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as "Staff are not slaves; Give us our rights’"; "We don't want obnoxious decree", "Dr. Seyi Adekoya must go".</div>

A colleague of the deceased, Oluwaseun Hameed, who spoke to journalists, said the deceased pleaded for prompt treatment but was not admitted because of financial constraint.</div>

The deceased friends, Folashade Oropo and Olubunmi Adekoya, expressed displeasure over the treatment, describing it as discriminatory against junior staff.</div>

The hospital management met with the staff union.</div>

The Chairman, Ijebu Zonal Area of the Medical and Health Workers Union, Oriade Bamidele, said the meeting resolved that the policy be reversed immediately, expressing sadness over the death of the member.</div>

The leader of the Hospital Management team, Isaiah Aiyegoro, refused to comment, saying the matter was an internal affair.</div>
