Chuka Umunna, the shadow business secretary, has confirmed he will stand for the leadership of the Labour party.

He made the announcement on Facebook following the resignation of Ed Miliband after a disastrous election campaign.

If Mr Umunna wins, it will mean that Labour will be the first mainstream political party to be led by a black man.

Mr Umunna, the MP for Streatham, revealed his decision in a video filmed on a Swindon street, outside a branch of Costa Coffee, and posted on his Facebook page.

The shadow Business secretary said if elected he would get the party back into office in 2020. Mr Umunna's only declared rival in the race to replace Ed Miliband - who quit last week - is Liz Kendall.

The other likely candidates are Andy Burnham, the shadow Health secretary, Tristram Hunt, the shadow Education secretary, and Yvette Cooper, the shadow Home secretary.

He said: “I am pleased to announce that I will be standing for the leadership of the party. I think we can and we should be winning in seats like Swindon.

“North, south, east and west – we can absolutely do it as a party. Some have actually suggested over the last few days that somehow this is a 10 year project to get the Labour party back into office.

“I don’t think we can have any truck with that at all. I think the Labour party can do it in five years.

“I want to lead that effort as part of a really big Labour team, getting Labour back into office, changing this country, and building a fairer and more equal society. That is why we all joined the party in the first place.”

Mr Umunna told how he had spent the days since the general election speaking to half of the party's candidates in the 80 Conservative seats which Labour had targeted.

The MP said that while the party's rout in Scotland - where it won a single seat - was "compounded" by what happened in England.

He said: "Of the 80 Conservative seats we were targeting we made a net gain of just four. We have got to do better than that if we want to win next time."

The party also lost two of the 10 seats it won southern England in 2010, he said, which meant that it was in the south of England where Labour lost the election to the Tories.

Mr Umunna said he wanted to get out of London to announce his candidature in Swindon because "we have got to be winning in a place like Swindon".
