Report by Kolawole Daniel, Tribune

The son of a former Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Alhaji Jhalil Tafawa-Balewa, on Tuesday, in Abuja, disclosed that nobody bribed him before he decided to step down for President Goodluck Jonathan in the race for the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead the 2015 elections.

Nigerian Tribune recalls that the PDP presidential aspirant had recently withdrawn his intention to run for the presidential primaries, saying he was already supporting the candidacy of President Jonathan for the party’s sole ticket.

Alhaji Tafawa-Balewa, in a chat in Abuja, added that his withdrawal from the race was done in the interest of the party.

He also noted that he stepped down for President Jonathan because of his loyalty for the party maintaining that he was now ready to work with President Jonathan for a better Nigeria.

According to him, the president has achieved some things within the last four years, stressing that PDP has all it takes to win 2015 elections.

He said: ‘‘I did my screening successfully, but I decided for the inner strength of the party, which I love very much and for the growth of our democracy, I decided to step down. It wasn’t the original intention. One, even with the withdrawal and wanting to work with President Jonathan, you will admit that some things have been met and Nigeria’s democracy will be looked at very differently.

“But I fought for some principle. In any democracy, you should be able to vote or be voted for. Now, that knowledge, I am sure, will be in our political dictionary, he stated.
