Many people were, late on Wednesday, feared burnt to death in a fire incident that occurred at the Long Bridge, on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
Most of the victims of the inferno were occupants of a passenger bus, heading towards Ibadan, before a tanker, fully loaded with petroleum product, exploded.
The fire was said to have started from the tanker but spread to the commercial bus, another mini bus and a Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle.
The incident created serious traffic on the road, as vehicles heading towards Mowe were directed to face the oncoming vehicles from Ibadan.
A source around the vicinity of the explosion described the fire as the “biggest” that she had ever witnessed in life.
The source, who pleaded anonymity, said they had to come out of their vehicle and run back, following the repeated explosions from the tanker.
The fire, as of 8.30 p.m., was still raging, while fire fighters and policemen were making attempts to put it out.
The Lagos State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Hyginus Omeje, confirmed the incident but could not confirm the casualty figure as of the time of filing this report
The Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe, also confirmed it, but stated that men from the Ogun State Fire Service were handling the incident, Nigerian TRIBUNE reports.
