Zambia has sworn in its sixth President in a ceremony which took place on Sunday, January 25, in Lusaka.

New leader, Edgar Lungu replaces President Michael Sata who died in October 2014.

Lungu will rule for the remainder of Sata's term until the country conducts fresh elections in September 2016.

The 58-year-old won 48.3 percent of the votes to beat rival, Hakainde Hichilema who garnered 46.7 percent.

"I am humbled eternally and debted to you all, my fellow citizens," Lungu said during his inauguration ceremony.

"The bottom line is that we want the country to go foward and to banish poverty in our midst," he added.

Hichilema however contested the results saying:

"The election was stolen and does not reflect the will of the people."
