This man wanted to make sure he gave his girlfriend a marriage proposal to really remember.

The so-far unnamed lothario hatched a plan to hoist himself up in a crane outside her bedroom window so he could sing a song and romantically ask his beloved’s hand in marriage.

Unfortunately for him, the memorable proposal in the Dutch town of IJsselstein didn’t quite happen as planned.

The basket he was standing inside in the crane developed a problem and when the crane operators tried to retrieve it, the unsecured vehicle carrying the crane toppled over and slammed down into the houses below.

Elaborate marriage proposal in a crane goes horribly wrong

Luckily, our lovelorn romeo was able to jump to safety without being injured but the fate of the houses wasn’t so rosy.

The roof of one house was smashed straight through and two other homes had to be evacuated.

More damage was done when the company tried to right the crane again and it fell a second time. Nobody else was injured.

But… somehow our Dutch lothario still managed to woe his girlfriend with the failed proposal (it was certainly memorable) and she said yes.

The couple are now recovering/celebrating their engagement in Paris.

It is currently unknown how much it will cost to fix the damage and who will be responsible for the bill.
