All cargo flights have been suspended at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) in an attempt to clear the backlog of goods at the facility.
With the traditional growth in the volume of goods at Christmas, the amount of cargo at the airport has grown and coming on the back of a two-week closure, it has overwhelmed staff and suffocated facilities there. To clear it all, Faan has advised operators of all cargo flights to find alternative entry points for their cargo as from today until further notice.
FAAN spokesman Yakubu Dati, said it has already advised the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) to issue a Notice to Airmen to this effect. He added that FAAN is constrained to take this measure at this time for the safety and security of all concerned.
Mr Dati said: “This has become imperative due to the congestion created by the backlog of cargo created following the two-week closure of the terminal by the Nigerian Customs Service. The authority has initiated measures to accelerate the clearance of these goods and return the situation to normalcy, so airlines and importers are advised to make use of alternative airports.”
Over recent weeks, the terminal has been closed, which has exacerbated the situation and allowed the pile-up to grow. This closure was brought about as a result of a dispute between the Nigeria Customs Service and clearing and forwarding agents who are opposed to what they describe as the collection of illegal charges from them by the service.
