JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - Two suspected rhino poachers were shot dead by rangers in Kruger National Park.
Rangers on duty were patrolling the South African park, which is roughly the size of Wales in UK.
During their rounds, they spotted three men thought to be seeking rhinoceros horn.
A park official confirmed an exchange of gunfire had occurred at dawn and that two of the poachers were killed.
"There was a shoot-out and two of the tree suspected poachers were fatally wounded", said a spokesperson.
The third suspect managed to get away after the incident, the Metro UK reports.
South Africa is facing a rhino poaching crisis, statistics from the government suggest more than 1,000 of the animals were killed last year.
They are hunted for their horns, made mainly from keratin which are thought to possess medicinal qualities.
The government plan to move the rhinos from Kruger National Park to safe zones away from poachers.
