In Philadelphia, a woman was arrested after she left her severely disabled son in the woods for several days.

According to ABC News, the young man is 21-years-old, a quadriplegic and has cerebral palsy. He was found covered in leaves, with a blanket, a wheelchair and a Bible next to him. His mother, Nyia Parler, abandoned him because she wanted to go visit her boyfriend in Maryland.

Currently, police believe Parler left town on a bus on April 3rd and the man was in the woods for five days. Lt. Walker of the Southwest Detectives said the following about the scenario authorities believe to have taken place: “She pushes him about 150 yards from the highway into the wooded area, takes him out of wheelchair, lays him on the ground, puts a blanket over him and leaves a Bible with him, and then just walks away.”

Lt. Walker added that during the period the man was exposed to the elements, was “completely defenseless,” in an area with wild animals, with no water and in cold damp weather. Lt. Walker said, “It’s only by the grace of God that he survived this. Amazing.” The man was found after his school contacted police because they were concerned about his absence.

The Daily Mail reports that on April 4, a day after Parler allegedly abandoned her son, she posted a picture of her and her boyfriend on Facebook with a caption that read, “I’m so happy.” Apparently, the boyfriend was unaware of Parler’s actions and assumed that other relatives were caring for her son. Police reported that he was in shock when he learned what happened.

After the man was found, he was hospitalized at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and is being treated for malnutrition, dehydration, a deep cut on his back that caused concern about potential infection and possible eye injuries. Now Parler is facing charges of aggravated assault, reckless endangering, neglect of a care-dependent person, kidnapping, unlawful restraint and false imprisonment. However, she was hospitalized for undisclosed reasons on April 11th and police cannot share anything about her condition because of medical privacy laws.

Ft. Walker said that Parler’s son appears to be improving in the hospital. He concluded, “He seemed to be a little happier yesterday. You could tell he knew his family was around and felt more comfortable. This kid is obviously a fighter. It’s just unbelievable how we found him last night. It’s just heartbreaking to see how another human, especially a mother, could treat him like that.”
