Certainly this Christmas won't be merry for some families. Among these are the families of the four mobile police officers killed by armed robbers in Okene, Kogi State.

The police officers were killed on Tuesday night during an attack on one of the banks in the town by bandits numbering 20. The armed men reportedly arrived in four vehicles.

Unspecified number of police officers were also injured in the attack which kept residents of the town awake throughout the greater part of the night.

In a statement, the state police command on Wednesday confirmed the robbery attack, but said two of the robbers were also killed during the attack.

“The entire area and all other banks in the town have been reinforced, while frantic efforts are on to track down the fleeing hoodlums.

“Many of them also escaped with gunshot wounds,” the statement, signed by the Public Relations Officer, DSP Elvis Aguebor, said.

It said the robbery was foiled by police officers from the two adjoining banks.

The statement also appealed to members of the public to report anyone with bullet wounds at the nearest police station.

The police assured the people that it had put in place measures to guarantee their safety during and after the festive season.

Three police officer were similarly killed about a week ago during a robbery operation at a bank in Egbe in Yagba East Local Government Area of the state.
