<b>ABEOKUTA, NIGERIA - The Ogun State Government has fired at least six officials of its Ministry of Education over an "offensive" Senior School English Language summary passage which formed part of questions set by an examiner.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
An examiner, Adegbenro Joel, was alleged to have prepared the English Language exams questions for the third term academic session of the State Unified Examination in public secondary schools.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The exam had a summary passage that took a critical look at the alleged negligence of education by government.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The controversial summary passage read: </div>

There is no arguing about the fact that the government is merely paying lip service to the development of education. It is true that a lot of money is being spent on education sector but, with little or no impact felt by the people, except where we want to deceive ourselves. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Many schools run by the government which were formally known for academic excellence have suddenly lost their prestige and are living on past glory. No wonder many parents and guardians are threateningly left with only one option, to withdraw their wards from these schools to other ones that are better managed.</div>

Governor Ibikunle Amosun reportedly got infuriated after his attention was called to the passage, and allegedly ordered the sacking of the officials of the ministry directly in charge of that examination.</div>

Reliable government sources said those fired over the development include an acting Permanent Secretary, Folashade Oresegun; three Directors including, Ganiyu Odunsi, and a Deputy Director, curriculum and evaluation, simply identified as Mr. Majekodunmi.</div>

The examiner, who is a teacher at Mayflower School, was also sacked, our sources said.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Other sources said the dismissal of Messrs Oresegun and Odunsi was later converted to compulsory retirement while the four other affected officials remain dismissed.</div>

When contacted, the Secretary to the State Government, Taiwo Adeoluwa, said he was not competent to comment on the matter.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
He said: "the issue is a civil service matter, the best person to comment is the state Head of Service. Please call Head of Service".</div>

But when contacted, the Head of Service, Modupe Adekunle, said: </div>

I am aware that not all of them were dismissed, some were terminated, some compulsorily retired. </div>

When the issue came up, the state government put in the necessary process, a panel was set up to investigate and based on their recommendations, the civil service commission has to decide. It is a decision that has been related to the affected officers. </div>

The normal process was that a panel was set up, the report forwarded to the Civil Service Commission for the civil servants, the Teaching Service Commission, for the teachers. </div>

The decision was in line with the civil service rule, due process was followed to the letter.</div>

<b>A desperate Nigerian job seeker who forged the signature of Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, purportedly recommending him for a job, has been remanded in prison.</b></div>

Obiejogo Raymond Azuka was remanded in Kuje prison, Abuja today on the orders of Justice Muawiyah Baba idris.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Azuka was arraigned today by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Gwagwalada, Abuja on a six count charge bordering on forgery.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Obiejigo, a Higher National Diploma (HND) holder from Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra allegedly forged a reference letter purportedly from the Minister of Finance, Dr. (Mrs) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala , alongside his curriculum vitae requesting for employment into the EFCC; Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) and Nigerian Security Printing and Minting (NSPM).</div>

One of the counts reads:</div>

That you Obiejogo Raymond Azuka on or about the 11th day of August 2014 at Abuja within the jurisdiction of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, intentionally induced the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) to employ you as Account Officer II by presenting a forged reference letter titled “Reference on Obiejogo Raymond Azuka” purportedly made by the Honourable Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala recommending you as a worthy officer fit for employment and which act caused harm to the reputation of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) and that you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 320(b) and punishable under section 322 of the Penal Code CAP 532 LFN,1990</blockquote>

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
In view of his plea, counsel to EFCC, Halidu Mohammed urged the court to fix a date to commence trial and also to remand the accused in prison custody.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, the defence counsel, J. E Chukwuemeka through a formal application asked the court to admit the accused to bail. But, his application was opposed by Mohammed who asked the court for time to respond.</div>

Justice Idris adjourned the case to June 2, 2015 for hearing of the bail application and commencement of trial and ordered the accused to be remanded in Kuje Prison custody.</div>

Nigeria’s new rate, unveiled this week by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) as the outcome of a revised methodology for calculating unemployment, has angered many Nigerians.</div>

The Statistician-General of the Federation, Yemi Kale, had announced on Thursday that Nigeria's unemployment rate, which stood at about 28 per cent by the 4th quarter of 2014, crashed to the new rate.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The revised methodology for computing unemployment statistics reduced Nigeria's official work hour benchmark from 40 to 20 hours a week, leaving the possibility of categorising millions of underemployed Nigerians "employed".</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Work hours are the average number of hours a person is expected to complete in a week to be considered employed.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Some Nigerians have, however, described the new figure variously as "delusionary", "politically motivated", "unserious" and "fallacious".</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Mr. Kale said if his bureau relied on the International Labour Organisation, ILO, which sees the "unemployed" as persons in the labour market who put in less than one hour at work per week, Nigeria's rate would have plunged further, and virtually all Nigerians would be seen as employed.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
A revision of the ILO definition to Nigeria's initial 40 hours per week, Mr. Kale said, resulted in an unemployment rate of 23.9 percent in 2010, a figure many Nigerians dismissed as false.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
But government experts considered that figure inadequate, arguing that persons who put in as much as 39 hours per week cannot be considered unemployed.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The NBS boss noted the difference between unemployed and "not having work", saying that only those within the working age of 15 and 64 years and looking for work, but cannot find, are considered unemployed.</div>

"When those in the age brackets of 0-15 years and 65 and above are removed, all others in the economically active population who are not working are either not available or willing to work, not unemployed, like student and full-time housewives", Mr. Kale said.</div>
